Annies going to sing her song
from Joe Offer: archive of the link posted above:
    http://web.archive.org/web/20010212000447/http://members.nbci.com/elstongunn/annie.html

    ANNIE'S GOING TO SING HER SONG
    (Tom Paxton)

    ORIGINAL TOM PAXTON LYRICS
    as reprinted on the sleeve of "Tom Paxton 6," 1970.

    What's your hurry? Just watch this.
    This is one you mustn't miss:
    Annie's going to sing her song,
    Called "Take Me Back Again."

    A drink for me, a drink for you;
    You're going to need a drink or two:
    Annie's going to sing her song,
    Called "Take Me Back Again."

    You never heard it sung before;
    I hear it twice a month or more,
    Complete with tears and sheepish grins;
    It only lacks the violins.

    The tune goes flat from time to time,
    The lyric sometimes fails to rhyme,
    But Annie's going to sing her song,
    Called "Take Me Back Again."

    La la la la la la la,
    La la la la la la la,
    Annie's going to sing her song
    Called "Take Me Back Again."

    It sometimes lasts the whole night long,
    Depends on how long she's been gone,
    I sit and look as hard as nails;
    She knows the damn thing never fails.

    Take the bottle, fill your cup;
    Don't miss the part where I fold up;
    Annie's going to sing her song,
    Called "Take Me Back Again."

    La la la la la la la,
    La la la la la la la,
    Annie's going to sing her song,
    Called "Take Me Back Again."

    It isn't Annie's only tune;
    The other I'll be hearing soon,
    Next week, tomorrow, or today;
    She sings it when she goes away.

    Take the bottle, fill your cup;
    Don't miss the part where I fold up;
    Annie's going to sing her song,
    Called "Take Me Back Again;"
    Come on, Annie, sing you song,
    Called "Take Me Back Again."

Found Crazy John:

CRAZY JOHN
(For John Lennon)

Crazy John, where you gonna run to today?
Crazy John, so early to be up and away,
They never can hear you, John, so how can you teach them?
They never come near you, John, so how can you reach them?
Crazy John, can I come along when you go?
Crazy John, you tell them what they don't want to know.
They never can hear you, John, they have no desire.
They're beginning to fear you, John, and the hate's getting higher.

When you wade in the water, the people can't see the old reflections.
When you stand in the road, the people can't read the old directions.
When the people get lost, they start building a cross.

Crazy John, why you wanna go back again?
Crazy John, talking with the desperate men?
You have to be crazy, John, for taking those chances,
When you could be lazy, John, just playing for dances.

When you wade in the water, the people can't see the old reflections.
When you stand in the road, the people can't read the old directions.
When the people get lost, they start building a cross.
Crazy John, I want to be crazy too.

They're all on Tom Paxton 6, so after work today I'll dig the album out of the box and put them down. (Though undoubtedly the redoubtable Mudcat will have them all within the hour!) I could probably do them all from memory, but the way my memory's been these days, I wouldn't trust me.

Aloha,
Mark

Hey, my memory was all right...except for some minor glitches on Cindy's Cryin'. But I think there might be a mistake in the DT..."We can make it but we better stop tryin'"-- should that be "start tryin'"? I can't get a clear auditory memory, but it does make more sense that way. Thanks for asking for these, vat...I've always loved that album.

Now, while we're on the subject, let me ask this question again: does anyone know the identity of "Uncle Jack"? I heard Tom perform it at the Main Point near Philadelphia in 1971, and I believe he said it was about an artist who had been blacklisted during the McCarthy era. His nephew had been living with him, but the authorities took the boy away because of the uncle's "unsavory" character. I'd love to know more of the story.

Aloha,
Mark

From: Joe Offer

Somebody pointed out to me that the Digital Tradition had some typographical errors in the lyrics for this song:

I CAN'T HELP BUT WONDER WHERE I'M BOUND
(Tom Paxton)

It's a long and dusty road,
It's a hot and a heavy load
And the folks I meet ain't always kind.
Some are bad and some are good.
Some have done the best they could.
Some have tried to ease my troublin' mind.

[Chorus]
And I can't help but wonder where I'm bound,
Where I'm bound.
Can't help but wonder where I'm bound.

I've been wandering through this land
Doing the best I can,
Trying to find what I was meant to do.
And the people that I see
Look as worried as can be,
And it looks like they are wondering too.
[Chorus]

Oh, I had a little gal one time,
She had lips like sherry wine,
She loved me till my head went plumb insane.
But I was too blind to see
She was drifting away from me,
And my good gal went off on a morning train.
[Chorus]

Well, I had a buddy back home,
But he started out to roam,
And I hear he's out by 'Frisco Bay.
And sometimes when I've had a few,
His old voice comes a-ringing through,
And I'm going out to see him some old day.
[Chorus]

So, if you see me passing by,
And you sit and you wonder why,
And you wish that you were a rambler, too;
Nail your shoes to the kitchen floor,
Lace 'em up and bar the door,
Thank your stars for the roof that's over you.
[Chorus]

(the CD booklet says "ease my trouble in mind," but other sources say "troublin' mind."

One of my favorite Tom Paxton songs is "My Favorite Year;" does anyone know the chords to that? I'm afraid I'm rather maudlin, so I don't know if I can even sing it without crying, but I'd like to try.

Right, "My Favorite Spring." I think that the baseball is incidental, though. I think its really a father & son song.

This is from a very old memory spo I can't swear the chords are perfect. But they are close enough to get you along the way.

MY FAVORITE SPRING
(Tom Paxton)
I us(G)ed to play baseball, I us(C)ed to love to pl(G)ay.
The people all said I'd be a win(A7)ner some(D)day.
We pla(C)yed in the sandlots and the gra(G)vel scho(D)ol ya(G)rds.
I on(C)ce had a try-out with the S(G)t. Lo(D)uis Ca(G)rds.

The Cardinals said, "Young man, we sure like your arm.
We believe you can make it. We'll send you down to the farm.
You need a little seasoning; play a little Double A.
We'll give you a chance to show how much you want to play.

Chorus:
Th(G)at was my favorite Spr(Em)ing.
I (Em)could do an(G)ything.
Fu(C)ll six foot tall and lean.
I(D7) was just seventeen.
M(G)y fast ball was not(Em)hing but smoke.
M(EM)y curve ball snap(G)ped and broke.
My change-up ma(EM)de 'em look bad.
They couldn't hit a th(D)ing I had.

Hi - If anyone is looking for the chords to some Tom Paxton songs, it's very likely that you can find it at my "Tom Paxton Chords" page HERE at http://ddpro.ucoz.com/tpchords/. The page now has over 150 songs with chords keyed to lyrics and the number is still increasing everday. When everything is done, the number would reach at least 300.
