Probably the worst advertised festival going. Only just found out its this weekend, and I'm meant to be there!

A web search reveals:

Starts: 03rd September 2006
Finishes: 04th September 2006
Location: Yorkshire and Humberside, England

Hull's International Sea Shanty Festival includes music, maritime craft demonstrations, dancing the hornpipe and the North Sea Classic Boat Regatta.

The Hull Marina springs to life with sea songs amid the splendour of traditionally rigged sailing vessels - including many traditional barges and sailing craft. In the Crafts Marquee, maritime experts are on hand to demonstrate the skilled arts of coracle making, ropecraft, ship bottling and woodcarving.

There's maritime mayhem in the boatshed on the west side of the marina, with games, nautical puzzles, badge making, tattoo painting, a bouncy castle and street entertainment for children.

Location: Marina Boatshed Address: 1 Paragon St, Hull
Telephone: +44 (0) 1482 223559
Cost: Free; ticketed evening concerts at various prices

Thanks Michael - missing you!

Just had a walk down by the Marina. The traditional craft (barges and keels) are well represented, and the various stalls seating etc being erected. If the weather stays like this it should be a good one!

The informal sing tonight will probably be in the White Hart (Alfred Gelder Street) as usual, but visitor may also care to check out the excellent 'Punch the Horse' in Durty Nellie's on High Street.

Spent 3 hours in the Minerva and enjoyed it but do the organisers have to send artists every 1/2 hour to sing at least four songs - humph

I'm not there, unfortuntely, but in answer to Carol - yes. It's Hulls way of doing things. I love Hull but couldn't make it this year 'cos I slipped up.

Carol - the idea is that guests do 10 minutes and then there's 20 minutes round the room, which (if it works!) is a fine way to do things. 'Cause it doesn't always work, but that is what the guests are asked to do. I do think that is one of the special things about Hull's Shanty Festival.

Mike - Maggie got your special hug, sorry to have missed you this year.

The official singarounds are also the floor spots for artists so there isn't really any other way to do it. We had a great singaround at the White Hart - unfortunately to had to leave early to drive home but it was going strong then and some locals were thoroughly enjoying the change from juke box fodder.

Yes, as usual we had a great time, although we didn't really make it out of the Minerva, including Saturday night's famed 'anti-shanty'. Roll on next year!

Most enjoyable of the three Hull Festivals I have been to so far even though I completely missed The Minerva - A wonderful proper Pub.
Made up for it by hearing Minerva (Hissyfit's wonderful new song) twice. Will have at least one extended visit there next year.!!

Many thanks to Shanty Jack and all involved in this wonderful weekend.

I'll second that John!

(I have to admit we did get sing a song each at the Minerva yesterday whilst John was in the bar)

Highlight for me was singing in the Syntan with Hissyfit & John from "Landlocked".

We had a great time-still damp in places- highlights were the Syntan sing with the Van Galens and John frm Landlocked-just a wonderful late night evening of hits from the Eurovision song contest with a campervan full of Shellbacks and the international cheeseboard. Never got round to Vicky Leandros and 'Come what may' did we chaps?

Festival was brilliant as usual. Next year's sing will have to include some heavy metal too, Linda - and why did we neglect poor Jimmy Osmond?
Looking forward to next year

Due to my disability, I was not able to get around to see all the acts that I wanted to see. But that was put to right at The Survivors Session. A thoroughly enjoyable evening!

The Minerva sessions were 1st Class as well. It was great to see old friends and thanks to the gentlemen who bought me a pint in the Minerva - as soon as I arrived. He actually did the same thing last year!!

Congratulations to Shanty Jack and Hull C.C. for yet another great festival.

Next year is the festival's coming of age. Its 18th Year!

See you there?

Dave R.

Fans of "Syntan" may be interested to know that the Beverley Barge Preservation Society are seriously looking at adding another barge to their collection. I'm sure they'd welcome ideas for its conversion!

My apologies for not including "Syntan" in the list of venues at "Sea Fever" It was great to perform in such a cosy atmosphere and ride up and down on the stair lift.

I appreciated the cuppa as well!

Good luck in your future projects.
