Five Hand Reel CD

Mention of Dick Gaughan earlier this week, reminded me that Five Hand Reel's first three albums have been reissued on CD format, by BGO.

Rather strangely, the 3 LPs have been released as a double CD, with The first LP; "Five Hand Reel", on one CD and "For A'That" and "Earl O'Moray" on the second CD.

Digitally remastered, the sound is very, very good.

Comprehensive sleeve notes by John O'Regan.

Would love to get a copy of that. I have the LP's. I recall reading on Dick Gaughan's website, that the band never received royalties for the albums when first released. I would hope BGO remedies that.

Good news indeed. I have the last two of these on well-worn tapes [not bootleg], but never heard the first one.

Any info re why no royalties first time around?

We've only got the first LP -- Jeri managed to find the second.

Recently I was able to get the CD of the first LP -- I'll have to see if Dick can get the other two for us.

I'd played to death the tape I'd made of the first LP. One of my all time favorite LPs!

Derek Brimstone(who knows a bit about piping, having done his national service in a pipe band) reckons the guy out of 5 hand reel was the best he ever heard.

I saw them once at Cambridge FF, but the sound mix didn't really do them any favours.

I'd be interested to hear what folks think of the reissues, and which are best.

Just to clarify, all 3 CDs are sold in one case -its a job lot! I bought mine very cheaply, after using

The Earl O'Moray is my fave, simply for a fantastic version of "Freedom come all-ye"

I saw the band at the Marquee club in London when "For 'A That" came out and thought they were great.

If you see it but fast! I understand that there is a legal dispute between BGO and SonyBMG over ownership and distribution has been halted.

I tried to find a copy today and failed.

All the best

I just got it on-line from Roots & Rhythm [Frank Scott} in California....they gave it a glowing review;I find they're seldom wrong,no matter which genre of music they're writing about.I'm in Eastern Canada;it usually takes about a week or ten days max.....

Great news that these are available again. I hope they stay that way.

Might be great for you, and for the owner of the rights, but not for the (remaining) band members.

So who owns the rights then? Is this another property of the dreaded Celtic Music/Dave Bulmer? Or were the rights straightened out prior to the reissue?

The 'rights' to the first album - entitled just Five Hand Reel - were transferred to TDB (the dreaded Bulmer) when he bought Rubber Records. The next 2 - Bonnie Earl 'o Moray and For a'that were owned by RCA - and I think these are the 2 that are in dispute. RCA is now part of the SonyBMG empire.
The last album - A bunch of Fives - was/is owned by Topic.

Have I missed one?

The best band of that genre in their heyday, but never really got the recognition they deserved.

The Earl o'Moray ?   Wasn't he married to Lady Mondegreen ?
