From memory:

Blues all along the oceanfront,
Blues is everywhere,
I want to sail the ocean wide,
But I got no steamship fare,

CHORUS: When my earthly trials are over,
Cast my body out on the sea,
Save on the undertaker's bill,
Let the mermaids flirt with me.

I do not work for pleasure,
Earthly peace I'll see no more,
The only reason I work at all,
Is to keep the wolf from my door. CHORUS

My wife controls our happy home,
A sweetheart I cannot find,
The only thing I can call my own
Is a worried and a troubled mind. CHORUS

My memory says the first line is "Blues all on the ocean, blues all in the air" and that he repeats the first verse at the end of the song (but of course all this might vary from performance to performance). Good job, Brad.

I learnt the first verse as:

Blues all in the ocean
Blues all in the air
I can't stay here no longer, lord
I ain't got no steamship fare

and another verse that goes:

Blues all in my body
My god has forsaken me
If I ever see her face again
I'll have to swim across the see

I posted the an almost complete set of lyrics to this here and then somebody filled in the missing parts. I have since gotten the book "The Music of Mississippi John Hurt" by Stefen Grossman, and the lyrics given there agree with the final result we got in that thread.

Hello, I'm desperately looking for all possible videos available about Mississippi John Hurt. I looked already on the Internet, but it seems not easy to find something about him. Can you advise me where exactly I can find all related videos on John Hurt.

Thanks a lot.

Steffan Grossman has several. I have 2 wonderful videos from his site with excellent footage of MJH. Send him a note asking him about it, he is a great guy. I'll bet he knows every single frame of video that MJH has ever been on too. His site is at: http://guitarvideos.com

It's not "my god has forsaken me" It is "my darlin' has forsaken me"

I, too, seek the videos.

And I won't miss a chance to promote my page about John. It is: http://members.tripod.co.uk/albo1/index-3.html Check it out.

Guest Jim,

Why do you want to join the Secret Service?

Sorry, the multi posts just reminded of the Monty Python Skit.

Seriously though, you might try a search of Harry's Blues Lyrics. I believe if you go to the top of the page and hit links you will find one to that site.
