Comedy is not enough on its own for a Folk Club but Festivals have more time and need to keep up the action.Of course B&D have a very strong musical talent to draw on as well; I really am looking forward to seeing them at Banbury. 20 Sep 06 - 11:28 AM (#1839197) Subject: RE: best fest act? From: Les from Hull The 'best festival act' should be capable of wowing an audience with excellent folk music, both vocal and instrumental, leading brilliant sessions and holding informative (and fun) workshops. Obviously the only answer is: Last Night's Fun |
20 Sep 06 - 12:01 PM (#1839225) Subject: RE: best fest act? From: Moses What about the New Rope String Band then? |
20 Sep 06 - 12:24 PM (#1839251) Subject: RE: best fest act? From: GUEST,Dazbo It appears that if you click on the d after the asterick the thread is split into pages rather than one long page. |

20 Sep 06 - 12:27 PM (#1839255) Subject: RE: best fest act? From: Chris Green If the criteria is the one set by Les from Hull I'd second Last Night's Fun, Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer, the New Rope String Band and Cloudstreet. I'd also suggest the rather good Kerfuffle. Chris PS - I'd suggest my own band, Forsh, but a) modesty forbids and b) we're already booked for that weekend in May next year! :-) Hope the festival goes well - it looks like the makings of a real cracker! |
20 Sep 06 - 04:05 PM (#1839430) Subject: RE: best fest act? From: Blowzabella Ok - I'm going to say - New Scorpion Band - appeal to lovers of good music everywhere - musical virtuosity, alongside intelligence, wit and an enormous sense of fun! (with a cv to die for see here |

21 Sep 06 - 07:56 AM (#1839881) Subject: RE: best fest act? From: George Papavgeris Les, 'tis not true that the ladies at Market Rasen were eating out of my knickers (what a thought!) - they were sheltering from the rain or hiding from the taxman or something. |

21 Sep 06 - 06:04 PM (#1840318) Subject: RE: best fest act? From: BusyBee Paul I might be slightly biased but best fest act in my opinion is Duncan McFarlane, with or without band / acoustic band. Very versatile, always an excellent gig. (That's another tenner you owe me Dunc!). |
21 Sep 06 - 06:26 PM (#1840337) Subject: RE: best fest act? From: Rasener Alright George, but they were at least swooning over you and chanting quitly to themselves "Come on George give it to me" or something like that. :-) |
21 Sep 06 - 08:13 PM (#1840412) Subject: RE: best fest act? From: GUEST,Forsh at work All this talk of eating out of knickers & George give it to me, is quite fine, but doesn't help me to decide who best to offer final spot at my folk fest to! |
21 Sep 06 - 11:49 PM (#1840510) Subject: RE: best fest act? From: JennyO Here's another vote for George Papavgeris. Dunno about eating out of his knickers (Nessie might have something to say about that :-)) but he went down a treat at the National Folk Festival in Canberra! Believe me, you won't be sorry! Jenny |

22 Sep 06 - 04:37 AM (#1840612) Subject: RE: best fest act? From: Scrump This thread raises the questions: what are the criteria that makes an act better at festivals that others? And are the criteria different from those of a "best club act"? If an artist has a good act, do they necessarily go down well in both clubs and festivals, or are the criteria different? Are there any acts who are good at festivals but lousy in clubs, or vice versa? |
22 Sep 06 - 05:42 AM (#1840647) Subject: RE: best fest act? From: treewind Scrump, if there's any difference, it has to do with size and cost! In general you'll see more bands at festivals and more solo performers at clubs. Even if you're a soloist or a duo, festival organisers seem to want you to form up a 4 or 5 piece band to fill their bigger stages. Anahata |
22 Sep 06 - 06:00 AM (#1840654) Subject: RE: best fest act? From: Rasener Or clubs can't afford to pay for bands, where festivals can. |
