BS: LET'S GO METS!!! #1!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Mets have finally clinched the division. It is about time!   5th divisional title in 45 years.   I know the Yankees brag about a trunk full of rings and pennants, but who really cares. 1969, 1986 and hopefully 2006. You gotta believe!

I know the wags and Yankee scum will soon jump on this tread, but too damn bad.   Nothing else matters tonight.

Thanks Seamus!   Before tonights game I was watching a DVD of that game. Ahh memories!!

And Rapaire - I feel for you and admire you and all Cubs fan. I have a chair from Wrigley Field in my den.   I've admired the Cubs and their dedicated fans who realize that there is more to support and love of a baseball team besides winning pennants.   The Mets had some of the worst years in baseball history, but our fans stick by the team.

Just wait till next year guys!

The Giants still have the most wins of any Major League Baseball team.

NL: Giants (New York/San Francisco) 10,037 (1883-2006)

AL: Yankees (New York)        9,192 (1901-2006)

PDQ, not that I relish the thought of defending the Yankees, but the above figures translates into 123 seasons for the Giants, 105 for the Yankees.

If my math skills are working (and please check my figures because I could very easily be wrong) - based on average wins per season - the Giants would have 81.60 games per season and the Yankees would have 87.54.

I don't think you can give extra points to the Giants just because they have been around longer.

Having a smart G.M. and almost an unlimited payroll are a deadly combination..... Both N.Y. clubs can lay claim to that..... If the Yanks and Mets meet in the World Series, I'd have to be concerned with the Mets starting pitching, particularly, if Pedro isn't himself....

Let's see what happens in a few hours. I want to send the Cards back to St. Louis without their feathers.

Seriously, they have a good team and a great pitcher on the mound tonight. It will be difficult for my Mets, but I still believe. I will always believe. You gotta believe!!

I don't matter, Ron, cuz the Tigers are going to whip whoever the NL sends down the pike.

Just as an aside, Sparky Lyle, the great Yankee reliever and the second worst trade my beloved Red Sox ever made, is a friend of mine. His son lives two doors down, so I see him quite a bit. But I haven't seen him since the Tigers (my home state and other favorite team) KICKED THE YANKEE'S COLLECTIVE ASSES!!!!!!!!! But when I do, I am sure we will have civilized discourse and appropriate analysis of how the Tigers KICKED THE YANKEE'S COLLECTIVE ASSES!!!!!!!

Cordially,

Mick

Danny Cater - the bum who was traded for Sparky Lyle?

What about John E. Kennedy, buddy? Played for a number of teams before he came to Boston in the early 70's. Average hitter.

Sorry, Ron. I really wanted a NYC/Detroit series.

Go Tigers.

GREAT game 7!!! I feel bad for the Mets. I really thought the game was going to turn on Chavez' save of the Rollen home run. But, now that the Cards are headed for Detroit with all of their feathers intact, I hope the Mets fans will back the NL Champs.

GO CARDINALS!!!!!

Like I said in the other thread...............

It may not look so good for the Tigers if they play the Cards. Musial will always be Stan the Man and a potent threat anytime he steps to the plate. Curt Flood has a fantastic on base percentage and he can steal on about anyone. Boyer anchors down third and White is pretty strong at first. With Gibson on the mound any lineup is going to have a tough day and Jackson is no slouch as a starter either. With the Cards, it could be tough.

But for the love of pete Olesko, YOU are screwed up royally!!! The Mets? I mean how the hell did they make it to the playoffs? I don't think they had a pitcher with a winning record or an ERA below 4.00!!! And sweet jumpin' Jesus, if your strongest players are Marv Throneberry or maybe Richie Ashburn...........Marv Throneberry?????? C'mon......

Yeah, if Kaline and Colavito get their hits and can negate the speed and power of Gibson then maybe it's an AL year. But "The Man" and the Cards can never be counted out. Flood's base thievery could take a toll on Tiger pitching.

Gibson has a sore rotator cuff and is questionable for game 1, but Diz has been throwing smoke in practice.

Yeah, Ok, Mick. Maybe the loser has to post his picture in the Mudcat Photo archive wearing the hat of the winning team? You look good in red, don't ya?

Since my beloved SF Giants are not in the playoffs, I'm pulling for a Mets/Tigers world series. I love New York (both parents grew up in Brooklyn, but were Giants fans, not Dodgers fans), and the Mets are my NY team. One of my alltime baseball heroes, Hank Greenberg, was a New Yorker...and through all but his last season, a Detroit Tiger. Gotta say i'll be happy if either Mets or Tigers win in a world series. Well, that's a Giants fan for you.

Okay... I've had my morning coffee and I'm not so grumpy.   Nothing personal Catspaw, I am sure your statement was made in jest.

Surely you knew that the Mets (as well as that other team from NY) had the best record in baseball, a strong pitching staff - perhaps the best in baseball during the regular season, a potent offensive lineup, and a superb management team that built a winner.   Unlike the Yankees, we are not calling for heads to roll on the day after a loss like this. Our manager is not in danger of losing his job, players are not automatically on the chopping block, and our heads are held high. Two years ago we lost 91 games. Last year we made it to .500. This year we had the best record in baseaball (along with that other team from NY).

The post-season injuries hurt us, but the pitching staff more than made up for it. The bats were the problem, and several players just weren't hitting in the series. It was simply baseball.

I've been a Mets fan since the days of Throneberry and Hot Rod Kanehl. I've had a partical season ticket plan since 1983 and sit in the same seats behind home plate. I was actually at the game where the Mets had their lowest attendance ever (under 7000 I believe), and I also shared in the joy of their great seasons. My wife still says that the greatest moment in her life was sitting at Shea to watch the final out of the '86 World Series. I agree.

Okay, I've got it out of my system. Let's go Mets.   Good luck to the Cards and Tigers, it will be a great series to watch. Both teams have something special this season.
