No Getaway for me this year

Subject: No Getaway for me this year
From: Charmion

Alas and alack, I shall be hard at work here in Ottawa this year while more mobile 'Catters enjoy the Getaway hospitality of the Folklore Society of Greater Washington. I have been asked to teach the writing component of the semi-annual two-week Defence Public Affairs Course, and the first weekend of November falls right in the middle of it.

Edmund is planning to be there, however, so the Getaway will not lack for civilizing influence from the Great White North.

I shall miss that smile and your presence greatly, m'dear. I guess Edmund and I will have to drink that beer (that we won't be telling anyone about) all by ourselves.

Next year then.

alack and alas.... we regret the lack of a lass. We promise not to allow Edmund too much fun without you.

Perhaps next year! (and I am currently cutting up tree particles...hope to have something to show!)

I'm sorry I'll miss you, Charmion, but I suppose Canada will be much safer with you there to defend it. I hiope you enjoy teaching the course.

Your annual mission to teach 'em "How to Write Good"? A work of supererogation?

Supererogoration:

Function: noun
Etymology: Medieval Latin supererogation-, supererogatio, from supererogare to perform beyond the call of duty, from Late Latin, to expend in addition, from Latin super- + erogare to expend public funds after asking the consent of the people, from e- + rogare to ask: the act of performing more than is required by duty, obligation, or need

Me, I'm still not sure if I'm going.

Well phooey! So, Charmion, does this mean that you will be attending Sinsull's annual New Year's Eve bash to make up for it?

And the more important question: Will Edmund be wanting his hat back?

Subject: RE: No Getaway for me this year
From: CET

Heavens no, Ranger 1. The hat is yours. It makes my heart go pitty pat to think that you are advertising the Canadian Forces Legal Branch. I wear my new Maine Department of Conservation hat all the time.

I have been putting off making a commitment to the Getaway since I have been warned that I might be going overseas as part of a UN Mission. However, I have now been told that if that mission does happen, I won't be going anywhere in November so I can take my leave as scheduled. I don't like going without Charmion, but she is encouraging me to go.

So Mick, are you going to wear your kilt or are you just a wannabe kilt wearer?

Edmund

As it happens, I worked a whole whack of overtime doing the Departmental Performance Report in September, thus racking up more than a week of "time in lieu of pay" as we so quaintly say in the Public Service of Canada. That extra holiday time will come in very handy for an insane dead-of-winter road trip to the Atlantic coast complete with mandolin, guitar and Edmund -- assuming Her Majesty doesn't have other plans for him.

Well, no, alas. The insane dead of winter trip means the trip from Ottawa to Maine for Sinsull's New Year's Eve party, which we hope to be able to do this year. Charmion is definitely committed elsewhere during the Getaway.

Great God in Heaven.

I am NOT planning to go (though anything can happen at the last minute).

But now there's talk of Mick in a kilt in Maryland.... next thing you know, all you closet kilt wearers will feel empowered and encouraged, and....

It would be best if you all went someplace else, far away, and didn't tell me where....

Dani, I am now feeling very disempowered and I can feel my self-esteem draining away. I can barely summon the willpower to put finger to keyboard. I may require a quick infusion of my favourite 8 year old Irish whisky.

As for Mick in a kilt in Maryland, the talk about it hasn't really attained the status of rumour - it's more in the nature of sober intellectual inquiry. One has heard that Mick possesses a kilt. One is intrigued, but one wonders if the world is ready for the sight.

I forgive you for your harsh words about kilt wearers. I'll have you know that my knees have won rave reviews from the cognoscenti.

Mick indeed does possess such a garment. And for you sad excuses for men that might make disparaging remarks, you should remember that real men wear these things. And the real women love them for it. Alas, I haven't worn mine since I put this weight back on. But I do have it with me here in Jersey. I am figuring I will reward myself when I lose about 30 lbs, which I am working on, and start wearing it again. I thought I would start by wearing it to chaperone my daughters Freshman School Dance. I have waited many years to embarass my children.

Remind me to tell the story sometime of the woman who just had to see what I had on under the kilt..... priceless.

Mick

Well, looks like I must join the list of no shows this year. It's been an agonizing decision. I love the Getaway but there is just too much going on right now and I really need to stay home. I was very much looking forward to the new location. Next year for sure. At least I can go to NOMAD which is in commuting distance.

Well, I hope everyone has a fantastic time and I look forward to reading all about it with great envy when it is over.

Karen, take the travel time your missing and find a minute to take a deep breath and pamper yourself. I think everyone who can't come and recharge with the rest of us needs to spend a few minutes Getaway weekend in appropriate behavior -- no matter where they are.

I hope they're all having great fun. But I just wish they wouldn't sing so loud late at night; it's keeping me awake! And, Amos, will you please re-tune your G-string! And, Sinsull, how could you!

I'm back in Ottawa for the weekend, after teaching all week at a military public affairs course in Cornwall. I can't remember when I was last so exhausted -- I have 26 students, which is at least 13 too many. Today I'm doing laundry, and tomorrow I will be busy preparing next week's lessons. No rest for the weary wicked.

I wish I were there, if only for Edmund's company -- Bill, Perdy and Lucy have had nothing to say but "MEOW"! which I freely translate as "Where the hell have you been?"

Sing one or six for me, please, and buy a drink for the next mandolin player you happen to meet.
