Hi,

Does anyone have the lyrics to:

"I've Got No Honey Baby Now" by "Frank Blevins & His Tar Heel Rattlers." It's on honkingduck if you want to hear it.

Starts: "I used to go a-courtin' didn't know how;

Any other versions?

Thanks,

Richie

Thanks Sorcha,

I'd like to know the difference between Red Rocking Chair/ Honey Babe. Some of the lyrics are Red Rocking chair and the others are similar to Doc Watson's version with the "me oh my" lyric. This is a different version. The singing is hard to understand. Here's what I have:

Lyr add: "I've Got No Honey Baby Now" by "Frank Blevins & His Tar Heel Rattlers."

Used to go a courtin', didn't know how
Now I wanna get married;
Got no honey babe now

Now I will be marryin', goin' across the sea
Now don't have my children along
No honey babe for me

Used to be a single man, a-flirtin' around town
Now I am a married man
I carry my baby 'round

I'd rather be a sailor, way out on the sea
Than to be a married man;
A baby on my knee.

Used to go a courtin', didn't know how
Now I wanna get married;
Got no honey babe now

I was thinking that Red Rocking Chair and Honey Babe were variations of the same song. According to http://www.bluegrassmessengers.com/master/honeybabe.html they are. Ditto Red Rocking Chair.

Still looking for the lyrics you have above from Blevins. They are very different from lyrics I found for the song anywhere else. I'll take a listen after a bit.

The above site also notes they are part of a large "family" of Sugar Babe/Red Rocking Chair songs.

Thanks,

Dock Boggs' Sugar Baby is the branch under which I categorize the Red Apple Juice/Red Rocking Chair/Honey Babe songs.

What a great song! This is what I sing:

Ain't got no use
Ain't got no use, For your red apple juice
Ain't go no honey baby now
Aint got no honey baby now

Even though the "Ain't got no honey babe" lyric is the same last line I consider the songs to be related (lyrics) but different songs. There are floater verses from "Singlegirl/" and "Free Little Bird."

This is similar to "Silly Bill." Anyone have versions of Silly Bill?

A friend of mine, Judy Woodall, recorded a very nice version as Red Rocking Chair. mp3 here.. I'm not sure where she got it. Her lyrics are here.

The links don't take you exactly to where you need to go. For the mp3, click on music, Red Rocking Chair. For the lyrics, click on albums, then Black Pony, then Red Rocking Chair, then scroll to bottom of page.

I know this thread has been inactive for quite some time, but I thought I might add my two cents. I have heard Eli Smith and his band the Dust Busters use the eighteen pounds of meat a week verse from Way Down the Old Plank Road (famously by Uncle Dave Macon). Also, I know it's splitting hairs, but I have also heard the Dust Busters sing the first verse as "Used to go a-courtin', didn't know how, now my love got marries, got no honey babe now."
