BS: Huge Native American Face On Google Eart

A large (225 meters) face of an Aztec looking native was spotted by Google earth in Alberta. It appears to have an I-Pod earbud stuck in it's ear but it is actually a road leading to a gas well.

Check it out: http://www.dvhardware.net/article14548.html

Anyone else see the big nosed crone behind and above him, facing the other way?

It's amazing what these features will throw up... and no two people will get the same picture.

I still reckon that's an earpiece though... perhaps he's the FBI Liason?!

Hey - that's no Native American; that's a Native Canadian. Next thing Canada Geese are going to be America Geese ...

(By the way Liz - there's a rather politically-incorrect pun at the end of your message - let's see if any western-Canadian catters pick it up. Let's just say that he's one FBI all right).

It look like Inca or something....

Now it's just a matter of time before someone finds a Madonna or Jesus, and the price of real estate skyrockets somewhere.

Don't worry; the price of that piece of real estate has been doing nothing but skyrocketing for the last ten years. We're talking oil - black gold, Texas tea.

Definitely a Seminole headdress. What the hell is a Seminole doing in Canada? Probably listening to Roxy Music on his I-Pod and made a wrong turn at Waycross Georgia.

Now that knocks the Mars face into a cocked hat! This one isn't going to vanish by switching the angle you look at slightly. And there's a couple of other faces in there, if you move slightly out and pan over to the left.

Try doing it it here.

FBI: I first heard that when I lived on a Reserve in Alberta. I'm Canuck. Don't assume it originated in the USA.

Obviously space gods came in their chariots and taught the early Canadians how to make faces so that they could make ads for the early Aztec deities. This one is for Qitaxholinim, Aztec god (or perhaps goddess) of puce.

That reminds me of a picture I have in my possession. A friend and I had taken a day-excursion boat to Tracy Arm, a glacer-choked fjord a few miles south of Juneau. The boat lingered long at South Sawyer Glacier.

Suddenly I saw an unmistakable face in the mass. My camera's battery was low so I got my friend to snap it.

When I got the picture from her a few days later I took it to a camera shop and enhanced the image (without altering outlines).

It is a brooding Native American face. The head is clothed in a fur-lined parka hood. It is really quite remarkable.

I see a very well proportioned, human being with a lovely neck and shoulders, surrounded by vegetation. What some see as a crone, I see as a large leaf.

This certainly beats the shroud of Turin and so-called images of Mary.

How about starting a story that incorporates these images and explains or expands on how he/they got in there? Certainly would not be anything new in Native American myths.

The First Nations People of Canada prefer to be identified by the name of their tribal associates or a specific band (although this is not quite right, either). To be safe, they are usually called Aboriginal. Thats why its a bit strange to call the image found in Alberta, Native American.

To be fair, most Aboriginal people do not recognize political boundaries so why try to attribute the image to a specific nationality or that it is anything other than an image of a human being?

A beautiful image of an ancient ancestor.

Peace - No offence (to give it, strictly speaking, the Canadian spelling) taken; I realized you didn't quite get what I was saying. I figured, as you've no doubt deduced, that it would probably only be western Canuckians who would be familiar with the acronym in question, not that western Canadians would be baffled by it.

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with the term "Native American", but I think to many Canadians it has an old-fashioned, even quaint ring. As dianavan says, it comes across as "strange" (to us) in this context. Just one o' those things.

In the US we still say Native American- wish we would switch to 'First Nation'. Seems more respectful somehow, and certainly more accurate.

Oddly, in Alaska we say 'Native Alaskan' for the aboriginal people here, reserving Native American for people much farther south. Odd, because in a meeting we would say something like, "Any Native Americans or Native Alaskans here tonight?"

At the same time we whites can be second or third generation Alaskans here but that would come under a different heading; we might say 'born Alaskan' or 'long time Alaskan' or something like that. "Native Alaskan" has a specific meaning.

Funny. The folks who live on the Reservations (and I know a lot of them) prefer the title "Indians." Better, they prefer the titles "Apache" or "Potawattomi" or "Objiway" or "Shoshone" and even better, "Lemhi Shoshone" or "Citizen Potawattomi". I've been told several times "Call me an Indian. Anyone born here is a 'Native American.'" And they associate "aboriginal" with "extremely primitive naked people living off long-dead rabbits" (that's what I was told).

An archealogist of the Mountain Ute also pointed out that since humans evolved (as far as we know) in Africa, we're ALL immigrants. He would also like Colorado back....

There's always room for discussion. And odd as it may seem, people aren't always "expert" in the things they are part of. Any of you know the whole history of your ancestry, of where your family came from? There is always room for discussion. Being a member can give more standing, but doen't trump other educated opinions.

"The First Nations People of Canada prefer to be identified by the name of their tribal associates or a specific band"

Not necessarily. The Cree with whom I lived and worked preferred to be called Indians. That from the Chief, Band Council, etc. The 'First Nations' stuff is mostly political, and aboriginal wasn't a term they liked.

No need to type in the latitude and longtitude - that last link I gave takes you there, and you can go in closer, or move out and see the neighbourhood, including the other "faces". Here is the link again

And if it's enhanced, it must be enhanced on the ground itself, rather than in the computer, because those are satellite pictures on Google Maps.

On the other hand, I once had a student who identified herself in an essay as "an Abriginal First Nations Cree Candian". It was an ideal occasion for an impromptu lesson in redundancy, what it is and how to avoid it.

According to a geologist on the CBC last night, the area is not one of mountains, but of washed out gullies. Our brains are perceiving the face as a mound, at least mine is, when it is actually a depression. Enjoy it while it lasts, it apparently looks very different depending on the angle of the sun and will be gone with further erosion from flash floods.

That's a pretty big face to tweak - 225 metres across. And you'd really need to have someone up there in a balloon with a mobile phone or something to tell you what to do.

Seems much more likely it's just a chance thing - as I suggested, go to that site and back off a bit, and there are plenty of other features, some almost as striking.

It's a big world, and there 's room in it for just about every unlikely thing to turn up.

A nightshirt? Luxury!

"Have you checked your wee willie winkie for the other sock? "

Must be thinking of the North Atlantic Squadron: In days of old, when knights were bold,/And safes were not invented,/They wrapped old socks around something something,/And babies were prevented.

I can't for the life of me remember what they wrapped but it must rhyme with "socks".
