06 Nov 06 - 09:02 PM (#1877929) Subject: Lyr Add: SWEET GENEVIEVE From: Jim Dixon Here's a more complete version than the one in The Digital Tradition; also note the title. James J. Fuld, in "The Book of World-Famous Music," 4th edition, says this song was copyrighted in 1869, but the oldest version at The Library of Congress American Memory Collection web site is from 1875. SWEET GENEVIEVE Words, George Cooper. Music, Henry Tucker. 1. O! Genevieve, I'd give the world To live again the lovely past; The rose of youth was dew-impearled But now it withers in the blast. I see thy face in ev'ry dream, My waking thoughts are full of thee Thy glance is in the starry beam That falls along the summer sea. CHORUS: O! Genevieve, sweet Genevieve, The days may come, the days may go; But still the hands of mem'ry weave The blissful dreams of long ago 2. Fair Genevieve, my early love, The years but make thee dearer far. My heart shall never, never rove Thou art my only guiding star. For me the past has no regret Whate'er the yeas may bring to me I bless the hour when first we met, The hour that gave me love and thee. |

Wm. A. Pond & Co., NY foster songs de This excellent website has all of the Stephen Foster songs, plus a selection of other American 19th c. songs. The title sheet is shown for many of them. Excellent midis. Another source of title sheets is "Three Centuries of American Music," vol. 2, 1865-1910. G. K. Hall & Co. I don't have this volume, but the set is in larger libraries. (Vol. 1, American Solo Songs through 1865, has excellent reproductions of original sheet music of better-known songs. It would be an onerous task, but a committee to replace faulty and mis-leading texts in the DT with accurate lyrics and attributions would be welcome. There are a number that seemingly are based on someone's faulty memory, or a mis-heard variant of an unnamed singer. Thanks for the many corrections and additions that you have submitted. Much appreciated. |
