It's as I mentioned over on The Annexe. If you old timers would think back, you would remember that this seems to have a habit of happening around Thanksgiving (think Deer Camp all you transplanted Midwestern USA members). This young man named Max has the sheer audacity to think he can just take off, enjoy the woods and family over a holiday weekend with no thought whatsoever to the loonies all over this globe that want to take up his time. The nerve of the guy (says Mick with tongue planted firmly in cheek).

Glad you had a good weekend, Max. Did you bother to hunt, or just enjoy the woods?

Mick

Khandu, a "bopard" is a cross between a leopard and a bovine. It is a large, spotted, extremely fast, carnivorous cow which spends most of its life standing around chewing its cruddy cud.

Non obit, domine. Not until death, Max? Or something like that. (I never took Latin, but my parents spoke it when they didn't want us kids to know what they were talking about. Some of it stuck, poorly.)

Peace, and thanks, Max.

Yeah, I did some hunting. It sure was beautiful out there. Not great hunting in such warm weather, but it sure is nice. Didn't get a deer this year, a bit of a coyote problem in that county. But then again, sometimes I don't even load the gun. Sorry we were down, its those damn spammers crashing our server. I'll try to get Pene some tools to fix it remotely like I can. Cheers folks.

They mostly do when people can't handle the truth...

O.k.. not truth.. facts....

If it's truth you're interested in, Dr. Tryee's philosophy class is right down the hall.

The FACT is having more than one person who can maintain the Mudcat server should go without saying.

If only for the reason that a burden shared is no longer a burden.

Maybe it'll put an end to the points "Max deserves a life away from mudcat" whining that comes from people who ought to know better, how much that isn't the issue in the least. That also goes without saying.... No one, for a second, is suggesting that Max should be sitting on the Mudcat server 24/7/365.... If there were 3 or 4 people that could also monitor it, he wouldn't have to. That's just smart web-site management.

What should be is never a fact; merely an opinion about a possible fact.

Will you volunteer to be part of the shared burden?

Hey Max, if the squids and spammers keep on, I think you're gonna have to make this a members only thing. I gave it up over at my small setup at tweedsblues.net and have it set for folks to register to post. They keep their cookies and don't have to sign on every time, just like here, and I've had zero spam links since then. I don't think the cast of regulars at Mudcat would mind much and you wouldn't have to go nuts every time the jerkwads selling viagra or whatever decide to blast your pages with links.

It's nice to have the open forum setup, especially here at the 'cat, and I miss having the odd person drop in from nowhere with some good info, but I don't miss the headaches and freakouts every morning wondering what the squids did to my forum the night before.

This has been discussed heatedly for the last few years but might be time to look at it again, unless you have some sorta filtering magic to vaporize the spamsquids when they hit the "Submit Message" button.

Clinton - what about the fact that many possible and probably situations require PHYSICAL access to the server?

30 Nov 06 - 02:42 PM (#1896738)
Subject: RE: NON OBIT - Mud Cat
From: Clinton Hammond

Then there aughta be someone who can help Max do that too....

It's a question of how seriously does Max take this place?

We can't be expected to take it more seriously than he does.

IF he was very serious about it.... well, that's a whole 'nother thread

30 Nov 06 - 02:53 PM (#1896752)
Subject: RE: NON OBIT - Mud Cat
From: MMario

If? Clinton - you don't even consider the internet "real" - Why do you slam a site that Max has kept open over 10 years? 10 years! That's pretty damn serious!

30 Nov 06 - 03:12 PM (#1896769)
Subject: RE: NON OBIT - Mud Cat
From: Clinton Hammond

I'm not 'slamming' the site....

It is what it is... nothing more... nothing less...

But when it's down for days at a go?
When it's running on the best software that 1996 had to offer?
When it takes more than a YEAR to recover from a crash?

These things speak louder to me than "10 years".... LOTS of web sites are 10 years old.... some are better run than Mudcat... some are not....

10 years? Ya... remember when we used to have things like streaming 'radio' with vid and chat? When there used to be more than 30 'members' who posted anything worth reading? Back before Mudcat was being run from Max's basement....

What do we have now? Down time, google adds, and a chat room that isn't worth the powder to blow to hell....   Oh... and excuses... lots of excuses.... (Mostly from people who have NOTHING to do with the actual running of the place. Their butt-kissing is pointless and transparant.) You say 10 years? I'd say sure, 10 years of downsizing....

Which is fine. If that's what Max wants the place to be, that's his choice and his choice alone. Can't nobody do it for/with him if he don't want them to.

Subject: RE: NON OBIT - Mud Cat

gee, it's nice to have such pleasant, constructive critiques, Clinton.
You sure know how to gently make a point.

You seems to have two modes for categorizing everything and everyone...they are either 'OK' or they are stupid, useless, badly run, and not deserving of polite treatment. Spent too many years dealing with hecklers, maybe?

30 Nov 06 - 03:30 PM (#1896794)
Subject: RE: NON OBIT - Mud Cat

What software would you suggest and what is the price of the software?

30 Nov 06 - 03:35 PM (#1896801)
Subject: RE: NON OBIT - Mud Cat
From: Clinton Hammond

Who said I was here to 'gently make a point', or to be 'plesant'?

Take your bogus 'emotions' and painted-on-smile and stuff 'em....

Not everyone feels the need to hide behind such falsities or contrivances.

I've had way more fans than I've had hecklers Bill.... Does that make you even more jealous? I though it would.

Care to address the -content- of the post? Or would you rather just nancy around with more ad hominem? (See above re butt-kissing... It's almost like you thought you heard me talking about you, Bill)

30 Nov 06 - 05:57 PM (#1896926)
Subject: RE: NON OBIT - Mud Cat
From: Bill D

yup...I'm overwhelmed with jealousy! (well, actually, I envy your competence as a musician...I am jealous of nothing)

Max would be amused to hear I participate in any butt kissing...*grin*

I simply will NEVER understand why a critique has to be made as an arrogant, insulting put-down.

As to the content of the post....yeah, I'm sure that a complete re-write of the site in some more elegant programming language would be welcomed....do YOU know anyone who has time, energy and expertise to do that...gratis?
The place, as you say, is what it is....and what it IS is a place that has endured 10 years and given many, many people much information and pleasure and allowed meetings, sharing and mutual understanding among people from all over the world....even if it IS offline now & then and done thru donations and in a private home...it survives, and gets improvements every year! (bend over, Max!)

Even you, Clinton, have gotten benefits from this poor, 2nd rate, amateurish, awkward, technologically backward little piece of the internet! Why, it gives YOU a place to peek into almost every day and show your superior insight to all the sheep who huddle here, blissfully unaware that they are not 'really' having fun. Such a deal, huh?

Ah, well...a boy needs a hobby to keep him off the streets...kinda like Shambles or Martin Gibson....so you just keep "tellin' it like it is", and I'll try SO hard to keep my jealousy in check....

Software: free Mmario.

Anything here could be done on the popular LAMP platform (free Linunx, free Apache, free MySQL, free php). I think what one needs to remember is history, ie. what was around when AND why decisions might have been made.

If you take the viewpoint (as I do) that MC was running on excess server capacity on Max's business hosting co and using the proprietry business software (things that do cost like a Windows platform, Cold Fusion, SQL Server, etc. you are probably on $1000s) but it would have made sense then and with the business supporting it.

The other side of the coin is what do you do now? A major rewrite to say move to all free or what when the business no longer exists. I think it's one of those where one might say "if only I was a fortune teller..."

---

The crash IMO was something else. Most people would have backed up data. That is not complicated...
