folk clubs near Dartmoor?

I suppose I should be very specific and say "Weekday folk clubs near Dartmoor" .... I'm working in Dartmoor prison from Monday 22nd Jan to Friday 29th and it would be a good change of scene if there was something musical to go to in the evenings of those few days. Is there? Anything within a - say - 30 mile radius of Yelverton considered!

Thanks ...

Anne

I beleive the following pub has a singaround on the fourth thursday of every month at 8:00pm.Its worth giving them a ring to see if they still do it. About 1/2 mile from the prison.

Prince Of Wales Princetown/a>

You should try to get to Bodmin Folk Club [ straight down the A30] on the fr4iday night. Also on the Sunday there is usually a session in Okehampton. I'll check it out and get back to you.

Thanks ... trouble is, I'll be heading home on the Friday night and on the Sunday I'll be travelling down and getting prepared for the week's work! So it's Monday - Thursday nights only. I'll try to find out about the Princetown singaround!

Nothing in Plymouth?

The Hyde parf club which used to be on Mondays has closed and the club at Wotter is Sunday. I'll ask when I see others this week

Have a look here:

http://www.harbertonfolk.co.uk/

Ones that spring to mind are the fortnightly singarounds at South Brent on alternate Tuesdays, and the music session at Scoriton on the first Monday of the month. See that website for details and links.

Bit further away but Galmpton near Kingsbridge has a folk evening at the Oak on Wednesday nights and also there's an Irish session on Tuesday nights at the London Inn in Totnes. The Crabshell in Kingsbridge does something on Thursdays but I think it's only first Thurs in month - best to check. The Galmpton one is very good but about a 45min drive from Princetown.

Cheers

Sadly Bideford is, I think, a bit too far for you, but we are every Thursday night at the Joiners Arms. We would be delighted to see you if you decided to make the trek to North Devon.

You could go to that pub where Seth Lakeman drinks, and maybe you will hear an old Dartmoor legend from an old bloke sitting in the corner of the bar, which you can set to an old traditional tune (you may have to write this yourself though, I'm afraid).

Didn't Seth Lakeman to a gig IN Dartmoor prison once....?

Yes, he launched his first [?] album there. I taught him at infants school for a while when I was on supply there as we lived in the same village....I'm just storing up the embarrassing moments for the right time...

Some of the prisoners may remember him, then ...I shall have to ask! As I'm getting them to tell stories you never know what might finish up in one of *my* songs ...

How far is Bideford from Princetown?

A perfomer just told me a line he uses for a boxing day gig at a prison up North:
"I've just been spending Christmas with my wife and family-------(long pause)---- and you think you're badly off!". Says it creases them up every time. I'm not recommending it, you understand.

Anne, I was afraid you'd ask me that! I think Princetown to Bideford is probably about 50 miles (via Tavistock and Okehampton) - and it is a 'long and winding road'.

Let me know if you want any more details

Rats ... 50 miles is probably a bit long, bearing in mind I have to come back again that night and work the next day.   Have to find another time to visit!

Personally, Anne, I think you are probably right! Jerry Bix says he used to do the journey regularly in under an hour and ten minutes - he obviously knows all the short cuts.
If you change your mind, PM me if you need his number to check the route (though I think you may have it already)
Otherwise, hopefully you'll make it another time.

I think Bideford will have to wait for another time ...turns out my visit to Dartmoor this time will be truncated because of building works at the prison, so I'm only there now Monday and Tuesday and will be rescheduling the other days. But I'll try to make it to the club some time!
