29 Jan 07 - 03:05 PM (#1951507) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Linda Kelly I thought it a very nice gesture, the Sun has a lovely atmosphere and it is again hard to see it empty of all but musicians, hopefully the regeneration of this part of Beverley may help. John went in the other week on a sunday lunch and it was completely empty (just in case some people thougth it was the musicians driving the punters away!) |

30 Jan 07 - 08:03 AM (#1952256) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Carol I would just like to clarify my comment about the 'freebies'. I go to various song sessions around the country and the landlords treat the participants differently in what they provide. Some just don't provide anything, fair enough, some provide food e.g. a plate of sandwiches etc., some provide a pitcher of beer to be passed around the participants and some provide free beer etc. for the organiser. I think that it is in the nature of sessions that it's everyone's contribution that makes a session. It's not just the organiser, and most of the time the session would/could still take place if the organiser wasn't there i.e. no-one is indispensable - what happens if they can't make it at the last minute, the session still runs. I see this as a gesture of appreciation from the landlord to the participants and if you're on a diet you don't have to eat/drink anything! |
30 Jan 07 - 08:18 AM (#1952267) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Les from Hull Yes it's always nice to get some sort of acknowledgement from the landlord. |
30 Jan 07 - 12:25 PM (#1952559) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: GUEST,SIR ROG AT WORK Back in the glory days of The Sun Steve, the then landlord, used to give all musicians a drink of their choice. I had a programme on my computer that printed off beer tokens which I then handed out at the session (both Sunday and Tuesday sessions). Steve obviously thought it worth doing in exchange for all the custom we brought in but I'm just as happy if the current climate precludes anything of the kind now. My comment about the free food on Sunday was intended to say that I don't need inducements to turn out to play. However, I do like my real ale and would like the opportunity to purchase some in venues like the Sun Roger |

31 Jan 07 - 08:19 AM (#1953420) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: ossonflags We could argue all day on the merits of having an organisor or not at sessions. The simple fact is that having an organised organisor at a session does encourage people who would not normally have the confidence to have a go. I have run sessions in the "Sun" and other places for many years and the feed back from others is that is the kind of ssession they prefare.Of course the session will always run without an organisor, but what usually happens in my experiance is that there will be some who will dominate the session to the detriment of others - that could be musicians OR singers. In the case of some one being unavailable for the Beverley sessions , we will contact one of the other regulars to take the helm. In the point of so called "freebies", we all give our services freely in the cause of keeping music live , but I think it is a wonderful gesture on any landpersons part to give anything in appreciation of our efforts. In the case of last Sunday at the "Sun" I would personally like to thank them for that unexpected lovely Sunday dinner. |

I was under the impression that who ever ( TOOK THE HELM ) ran it for the enjoyment of others not for we as an indivial could get from it. when rodger ran the sessions at Sun Inn ( Sundays & Tuesdays ) all who took part was given a free drink. i for one do not get a free drink when running the SUN sunday sessions. m/j |

06 Feb 07 - 07:35 AM (#1958831) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: ossonflags Yes "Guest" m/j that is as I see it.Who runs it gets what I get, it is no big secret. The same goes for whover plays in "Punch The Horse" The idea of free beer for the organisor in the "Monks Walk" - for that is I gather what you are on about - is what was offered to me as well as the venue by Lorraine when we had no home for the first Sunday singaround, yet again the landlord had left "The Sun" I inherited the Sunday session from Pete Dean who asked me to run it when he moved on to pastures new. At that time, some in the "Sun" got paid to run the session as well as free beer - just as they do at Festivals, and that does include Beverley Festival.Yes, I am also aware that Roger converted his to tickets I thought everyone was aware of the situation, this is certainly the first time I have been pulled up about it, so thanks for being so open, but I think it is sad when you could have asked me on Sunday when I saw you and I would have told you privatly what I am now sayin publicly, again I have no problem with this. I have been involved in Sunday sessions in Beverley for about ten years now and probably attended more than even Rog, who I met when he first came to Beverley. I do attend all the sessions in Beverley as often as I can supporting live music and like others I have to travel from Hull to do it, and sometimes even cut short familly commitments to attend all your sessions.I do the same at festivals and at Whitby for the Filo sessions, this for no reward except for the pleasure of keeping music live. If people have a problem with this situation I am quite happy to withdraw from being the organisor of the first Sunday at "Monks Walk" and let some one else run it - free beer and all. They also might like to take over my spot at the Beverley Festival in "Monks" when I look after upwards of 120 people all day making sure everyone gets a turn, again if there is bad feeling amongst us lets get it out in the open and then we can adress it. |
06 Feb 07 - 07:39 AM (#1958834) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: ossonflags Oh, and just to show that i have nowt to hide I will make an announcment at the next "Monks " session about me getting free beer, how does that suit you? |
06 Feb 07 - 08:13 AM (#1958879) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Les from Hull Well it's not news to me. Like I said before it's entirely up to the landlord or landlady and it's very welcome when it happens. Maggie and I have had a free drink in Monk's when running the iced gems sessions at the Beverley. But I'm sure that we're in the same boat as Mick. We'd be there anywhere (but like Mick says it's an additional commitment to run a session each month) and anything provided by the pub is very welcome, but not the reason for going. Les |
06 Feb 07 - 09:04 AM (#1958935) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Paco Rabanne I have to PAY Ged to let me play my mandolin at The Woolpack sessions. |
06 Feb 07 - 09:15 AM (#1958947) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Nick I, for one, have always appreciated the way you run the sessions you run Mick and if the pub deems it fit to give you free beer then you are more than welcome to it as far as I am concerned. Why on earth anyone should be concerned about it beats me. The way a session - singaround - whatever is run is as important as the venue, the beer, the food etc etc because the way it is run is the thing that decides whether people return to it. I know the places that I return to and I know the places I don't and probably the two main factors that determine that are the people who go and the way it is run. Anyway you're a very moderate drinker if I remember... :) |
06 Feb 07 - 11:51 AM (#1959155) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: The DeanMeister Blimey, somebody seems to have upset Michael! For the record, I started up and ran the original first sunday session for some 5 years, most of that time being spent at Nellies. In all that time I was not paid a penny, or a pint. Beer was offered first by the landlord of the Sun, and then The Monks Walk, as an incentive to take the session there when the previous venues had become unsatisfactory for various reasons. In those days, the first sunday session was responsible for in excess of a thousand pounds extra being taken over the bar, so a little reward was always welcome. Regulars may recall I used to ensure that everone who gave a song/tune got a pint.....? Keep singing, guys Pete |
06 Feb 07 - 12:05 PM (#1959173) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Sir Roger de Beverley Just to clarify. Steve, then landlord of the Sun, was prepared to give up to 40 free pints for a Sunday session and around two dozen on a Tuesday evening. It wasn't my own free beer as organiser that I turned into tickets but was intended for the whole crew because, as Pete so nicely put it, the session was worth around £1000 extra over the bar to the licensee. As Mick also says, the Monk's session came about about because the Sun was closed when Steve left and it happened to be Mick's session that week. I don't think that even Mick drinks 40 pints on his own on a Sunday and I can't see the pub being able to give everyone a drink - times have got very bad economically for people who run pubs. Personally I am happy to pay for my beer in the Monk's and, if the landlady wants to give a pint or six to the organiser, more power to him. The folk scene in Hull/Beverley would be a lot poorer place without Mr McGarry so please don't go upsetting him over a few free pints - i think that he is worth it at the very least. Rog ps We also now run our Tuesday slow session in The Monk's and that came about because the Sun was closed when we turned up one Tuesday evening and Lorraine kindly took us in. |

I have had the offer of free beer and have not accepted, But I have had the odd free pint and welcomed it, to me it says that the landlords are happy to continue with their support of live music, Lets not knock down what has taken 15 years to build. Keep music live and friendly. I may be away for the next two weeks, hope to see you all soon,Best to all Oombajo |

08 Feb 07 - 09:18 AM (#1961094) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: GUEST It is. There are more important things in life than jealousy over a few free pints. And they are not really free - they are earned - by a good man - Mick. |
08 Feb 07 - 10:01 AM (#1961141) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: The Sloan Ranger I used to go to the Sun sessions when they were bustling a couple of years back and the the most I ever got was 1 ticket for a free pint and I had to rely on the rest of my weekly wages to free my inhibitions. I'm sure by the end of the night I didn't even remember I'd had it! The free drink didn't make any difference. The Monks now is nowhere near as busy and I'm sure they give out a tiny percentage of what they have in other places and it wouldn't be fair on Mick to decide who got a pint and who went without. Mick does a good job and I know people who get paid cash for running sessions. Credit to him that he does it just for a few beers cos he loves being there and he loves his singing. |

Who's so petty as to be worrying if someone else is getting a free pint from the "landperson", (whatever PC term that represents). The answer is simple if they don't like it don't attend, with that attitude I am sure they won't be missed. All the Beverley sessions are extremely well organised, and done selflessly by whichever organiser is in the chair. If the licensee wishes to show their appreciation that is surely a matter between them, and nothing to do with anyone else, and having spent many pleasurable hours in Micks company I know that he always holds his corner wherever we are. 16 Mar 07 - 04:40 AM (#1998252) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Sir Roger de Beverley A discussion point for you all: Severall regular sessioneers hvae approached me over the last few weeks to sound me out on the idea of moving one or more of our sunday sessions to The Tiger - why they pick on me I don't know but here goes: I have never been in The Tiger so I don't have any personal experience of its value as a music venue. However I am assured by others that it is good for space and acoustics, quality of beer and enthusiasm of landlord. Any other opinions? The main driver of change seems to be disatisfaction with the cleanliness, toilets, lighting and beer supplies at The Sun and the general ambience and beer in that separate room at Hodgson's. Anyone who has spoken to me in the last 5 years will know how grieved I am at the decline in The Sun and also how much I love the feel of the pub when it is run properly. At the moment I'm not happy with the feel in there at all - any opinions on that? So, it is open to discussion. I'm told that landlord of the Tiger would happily have us there every Sunday but then every landlord in Beverley woud probably say the same, given the amount of trade that we bring in. We work as a collective so it is up to the regular, active participants of the sessions to say what they want - over to you. Roger |

16 Mar 07 - 12:24 PM (#1998712) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: ossonflags Well said Rog. The reason people come to you is that they look on you as an elder statesman......! As you know whatever is sorted I will support any move to keep music live. From my own and others point of view, there is a wish to continue with "Monks" I have had no constructive opposition to this. The ambiance in the "Sun" is great and it holds many wonderful memories for me.It would be a shame to lose that. I have been drinking and singing in the "Tiger" a few times and found it to be a friendly hospitable pub.It has a great range of well kept beers and as the landlord says "it is off the beaten track for those who like to move from pub to pub" He does seem very "Folk friendly" and has booked "Punch The Horse" for a coupla gigs. I do take your point about us'ns being a collective and down to all hands to decide were to spend their few bob and their time, that is as it should be. It is also worth saying that when mentioning the activists we do not forget to include those who turn out week after week to listen to us lot sing and play. There is a few who now have the confidence to come and sing/ play who came first to just sit and listen. |
16 Mar 07 - 02:44 PM (#1998842) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Sir Roger de Beverley Ted, Mick By "active" I intended to mean those that support the sessions as players, singers listeners, whatever. 16 Mar 07 - 03:07 PM (#1998881) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Graham and Jo We think it's a briliant pub with excellent beer. There is also a car park and easier parking around there. We can't often get to Sundays but recommend the pub. |
16 Mar 07 - 04:49 PM (#1998985) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Les from Hull I'm sure that Maggie and I will support the Sunday session whenever we can and wherever it is. I agree that it's a shame about the Sun, which has been welcoming in every respect under its various landpersons, but I could see how lack of proper beer might be a serious disincentive. I suppose we could go Monks, Sun, Hodgsons, Tiger keeping both pubs in for the time being, but that might be dodging the issue. The Sun has always had Guinness available so I for one have not been inconvenienced. See you all for Maggie's Birthday Bash at Hodgsons on Sunday, following what I'm sure will be a memorable St Patrick's Night with Punch the Horse at the Dorchester! |

17 Mar 07 - 12:15 PM (#1999512) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: oombanjo I would support the change Roger, but we should check, that the start time of the session does not interfere with sunday lunches, that the room would support a full house without annoying the regulars, that we are not shifted from room to room, We know about that one already.chee3rs Oombanjo |
18 Mar 07 - 06:12 AM (#2000025) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Sir Roger de Beverley One proposal that has been to me is that we, initially, look at moving the "fourth Sunday" (ie second at the Sun) to the Tiger and see how it goes. 20 Mar 07 - 08:58 AM (#2001986) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Les from Hull Yes Rog - we have agreed that we will stick with the Sun for the time being to support the pub and hope that the beer situation will improve. My suggestion that we could go to the Tiger was made to support real ale drinkers (I'm not one) who have been having a hard time in the Sun, or so I understand. Perhaps if the landlady could could put on a 'session' real ale for the second and fourth Sunday (Black Sheep would be perfect) it would help to keep the session there. Thanks to everyone who turned up at Maggie's Birthday Bash - it was spiffing. She had a wonderful birthday, so give yourselves the clap that you so richly deserve! |

25 May 07 - 05:52 AM (#2060512) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: ossonflags Like Carol I was one off those who voted to stay at the Tiger. It is a shame for all parties that the "Sun" keeps changing hands and my sympathy is with the people who put their hard earned cash into such a venture..........how many have we seen in the last coupla years who were going to make a change in the "Sun"? It is very difficult for any one in the licensed trade to make a living these days - just look around the countryside to see how many pubs are closing each week.I fear we have seen the demise of the traditional pub as we all new and loved. I live in Hull, a big city, were I would be pushed to find five pubs that I would wish to drink in and as for folk friendly pubs and folk clubs-forget it.That is why I do most of my socialising in Beverley. I have had great times in the Sun in the last few years, and hope to in the future, but take it from "Tiger Johns" point of view.I remember the Sunday when we moved over at ten minutes notice and he could not do enough for us.I would be a bit put out if a coupla weeks later the people I helped out moved out on me. A few years ago I was faced with a simular situation when I moved our session from the "Sun" to the "Monks Walk", differance is, there it remained. I could and would not let Lorraine down. As I pointed out in an earlier thread John and his staff treat us all with courtesy and enthusiasm - that goes for Jo and Graham's and Jed and Teddo's sess (cannot comment on observation on that one ,as being only a singer and not allowed, but on hearsay it sounds pretty good). The beer is always on song and people who come and have a listen just do that, not I fear as in the "Sun" were noise levals sometimes were intolerable. We understoud that "Tiger" John had been informed about the fourth Sunday, and I hope this misunderstanding has not soured our relationship with him for the future. |

If someone can make a go of the deal they get with the Sun good luck to them. One couple made money on doing food and subsidised the loss on the pub from that. Someone else got by for a while by doing almost all the work himself and having no staff or partners. |

19 Jul 07 - 11:18 AM (#2106836) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: GUEST,guest I have just been reading some of the comments posted about the SUN INN, Beverley I moved to the area about six months ago and went in the Sun Inn, I must say that since these new people have taken over the place is great, they always have a warm welcome for you and has far as Hand-Pulled Boys comments on the beer I am a serious real ale drinker and the beer is top notch I dont think Hand-Pulled Boy would know a good pint if he drank one. I think there must be a bit of the green eyed monster in him!!!!!! |

24 Jul 07 - 03:39 PM (#2110306) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Hand-Pulled Boy Dear guest, you are absolutely correct the beer has improved dramatically since my post regarding it's poor quality under previous regimes. It's a credit to the new folk in charge and I'll happily drink their beer in the future. Cheers! |

28 Aug 07 - 07:07 AM (#2135150) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: GUEST,guest I was very dissapointed when I went to the sun inn on sunday that the folk people had let the new tennants down and did not turn up for their session. Lets not forget that the new tennants would do anything for the folk people and this is how you repay them. From a very saddened customer of the sun inn |
28 Aug 07 - 07:13 AM (#2135153) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: GUEST,another customer I agree with the guest these new tennants are trying hard to bring the pub back not just for the folk people but for everyone serving a good clean beer and very nice food it was dissapointing to see that the folk people had let them down but still there was a good atmospheer in the place and we were still greeted with a smile form the staff. |
28 Aug 07 - 07:54 AM (#2135167) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Carol We changed tne venue on the 26th and the new tenants were told about this by John Nixon, who would normally be running that session. The reason it was changed was because we were celbrating my 60th birthday and I had already arranged for John in tne Tiger to lay on food etc. long before the sessions returned to the Sun i.e. when the Sun was closed altogether. I checked up with John about 2 weeks ago and he confirmed that he had informed the new landlord of the Sun about this change of venue for the August session. |
28 Aug 07 - 09:11 AM (#2135205) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Sir Roger de Beverley I can confirm that the new licensees at The sun were well aware that we would not be there last Sunday. when John N and I were the only ones at the session last Tuesday he made a point of checking that they knew and, as far as I could tell, they seemed perfectly happy with that. Carol had booked her birthday bash at the Tiger long before the Sun had re-opened - nobody was let down. Roger |

We have to meet somebody to discuss a wedding gig in January, thought that might be nice. Also, we're chasing a gig at the Sun one weekend. Thought it may help if the bosses hear what we do (albeit acoustically). I decided to use my superior technical ability to establish who's session it was before we pitched up. 13 Dec 07 - 06:31 AM (#2214372) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Sir Roger de Beverley I agree with you guest - I wasn't complaining about the attitude of the public to the music. If I want to be heard, I'll use a PA. However, I am finding it a not very pleasant experience at the moment and will probably go less often because of that. That is a shame because I love playing and I love The Sun but there doesn't seem much point in going out not to enjoy yourself - I can do that more cheaply at home! R |

09 Jan 08 - 04:56 AM (#2231839) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: Sir Roger de Beverley Well, despite Roy's absence, we had a pretty successful Beatles theme night on Tuesday– around 15 performers on guitars, mandolin, mandola, concertina, harmonica and vocals who covered about three dozen of the fab four's numbers from their group days and after. From memory these included: I Saw Her Standing There (x2), Imagine, Jealous Guy, Dance Tonight, All you Need Is Love, You've Got to Hide Your Love Away, With A Little Help From My Friends, Ob La Di Ob La Da, Here Comes The Sun, Norwegian Wood, Rain, I'm Looking Through You, All My Loving, And Your Bird Can Sing, Get Back, Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite, Blackbird, Come Together, Day Tripper, Here There and Everywhere, Eight Days A Week, Fool On The Hill, For No One, From Me To You, Girl, Help, Hey Jude, I'm Only Sleeping, In My Life, Lady Madonna, Let It Be, Revolution, She Loves You, Things We Said Today, This Boy, Yellow Submarine. The pub was heaving and my only caveat would be that, at times, it was so noisy that I couldn't hear was I was singing myself never mind what anyone else was doing. Despite that, most people seemed to be having a good time. R |

28 Mar 08 - 05:55 AM (#2299418) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: The DeanMeister Might pop down sometime , John. Though I'm not sure if I'm barred...! I visited the Sun Inn on the saturday night before xmas. An unfortunate culmination of a sociable afternoon followed by meeting some hooligan mates (Tim Wheeler, anybody?) who started buying us shorts resulted in nether of us remembering being there. Seriously. Apparently we were escorted off the premises, and I broke my ankle in two places during the walk home. Wrecked my Christmas. It was not a day to be proud of, and not one to be repeated! Perhaps the management may remember us and let me know if we were actually barred...?? (rather embarrassed to ask!) Cheers, Pete :o( |
01 Apr 08 - 04:04 PM (#2303646) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: GUEST To the deanmeister we just escort people of the premises before any trouble can errupt. I am sure that if the next time you are in the Sun Inn you drink responsible then you will welcome steve (Sun Inn) |

07 Apr 08 - 06:57 AM (#2308917) Subject: RE: Beverley - Sun Inn From: The DeanMeister Indeed, it's a good job I'm not barred, because Viagra Falls have just been booked to play this very friday night 11th April at the lovely Sun Inn. Might be a bit awkward without the guitarist, really. Would be nice to see any catters for a pint who aren't busy elsewhere? Cheers, Pete |
