31 Jan 07 - 06:27 PM (#1953985) Subject: Lyr Req: You are my sunshine Alternate Lyrics From: charles92027 Does anyone have any kid-friendly lyrics for You Are My Sunshine? I know the proper lyrics, but they're pretty dark. I don't remember how we sang it in school. I'm getting requests from kids to play it, and all I've been doing is alternating the chorus and a melody on harmonica. I don't think they want to hear "I hung my head and I cried...." |

31 Jan 07 - 07:25 PM (#1954034) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: You are my sunshine Alternate Lyrics From: McGrath of Harlow Most adults seem to think of this song as a happy bouncy number. I suppose kids might be more likely to actually listen to the words and understand what the song is about - but I can't see that as any reason to try to turn it around. Kids know about crying, and about loss too, and they need to. |

Jane, Evanston, IL The other night dear, As I lay sleeping, I dreamt of you and all your charms. When I awoke dear You were beside me, And I held you in my arms. You have told me You really love me I lie awake and think of you But now that I know You'll be my sweet heart All my dreams are sunny, too. I'll always love you And make you happy And no one else can come between. Now we will always Be together You're the sunshine of my dreams. |

27 Sep 14 - 06:20 AM (#3664048) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: You Are My Sunshine - alternate lyrics From: GUEST,David Very nice, Jane. My daughter had a ladybug crib toy that played this song when you squeezed its feet. so my daughter loved the tune. over the years i've been singing it to her. but the verse about waking and not finding his loved one there is too sad. and recently i've had to start traveling regularly - which is hard on her. last night, i started singing it to her as we snuggled in bed. and she started crying. she told me that it makes her think of how she misses me when i'm not home. sigh. so i went out looking for alternative verses (i tried my hand at it, but i wasn't too pleased with my attempts). jane's version is perfect. i'll be singing these to her now. thanks jane! |

21 Oct 18 - 05:09 PM (#3957768) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: You Are My Sunshine - alternate lyrics From: PHJim It always bothered me that this original version didn't rhyme" The other night dear, As I lay sleeping, I dreamt I held you in my arms. When I awoke dear I was mistaken So I hung my head and cried. Instead I sang The other night dear, As I lay sleeping, I dreamt I held you in my arms. When I awoke dear I was mistaken SoI hung my head and cried. But after reading the submission by GUEST, Guest above, I believe I'll sing The other night dear, As I lay sleeping, I dreamt of you and all your charms. When I awoke dear You were beside me, And I held you in my arms. |

(Senior Service was a "better" Wills cigarette than Woodbine, which was the cheapest. The Senior Service meant the Royal Navy- there was a tobacco called Navy Cut). Nervice is nervous, of course. |
