Lyr Req: You Are My Sunshine - alternate lyrics

Does anyone have any kid-friendly lyrics for You Are My Sunshine?
I know the proper lyrics, but they're pretty dark. I don't remember how we sang it in school.
I'm getting requests from kids to play it, and all I've been doing is alternating the chorus and a melody on harmonica. I don't think they want to hear "I hung my head and I cried...."

Most adults seem to think of this song as a happy bouncy number. I suppose kids might be more likely to actually listen to the words and understand what the song is about - but I can't see that as any reason to try to turn it around. Kids know about crying, and about loss too, and they need to.

This was often (in my environment) teamed with another similar period song as a 'medley' - can't remember exactly what it was at the moment, but I seem to think it was "Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam".... :-)

I just rewrote these for a sing-along at a nursing home. Here's my version.
Jane, Evanston, IL

The other night dear,
As I lay sleeping,
I dreamt of you and all your charms.
When I awoke dear
You were beside me,
And I held you in my arms.

You have told me
You really love me

I lie awake and think of you
But now that I know
You'll be my sweet heart
All my dreams are sunny, too.

I'll always love you

And make you happy

And no one else can come between.

Now we will always
Be together
You're the sunshine of my dreams.

Very nice, Jane.

My daughter had a ladybug crib toy that played this song when you squeezed its feet. so my daughter loved the tune.

over the years i've been singing it to her. but the verse about waking and not finding his loved one there is too sad. and recently i've had to start traveling regularly - which is hard on her.

last night, i started singing it to her as we snuggled in bed. and she started crying. she told me that it makes her think of how she misses me when i'm not home. sigh.

so i went out looking for alternative verses (i tried my hand at it, but i wasn't too pleased with my attempts). jane's version is perfect. i'll be singing these to her now.

thanks jane!

I vaguely remember from wartime years, ww2 that is, there was a parody extant that went

'You are my sunshine, my Double Woodbine
My box of matches, my pint of beer,'
My ???????

Unfortunately that is all I can remember. Can anybody complet3 it?

Sung post "World Cup 2014"

You're on the dole now
You're on the dole now
You've been unemployed for half a year
You can take your "f2ckin" football
And stuff it up your rear.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

That's really lovely, Jane. I sing this song to my sons every night at bedtime and tonight I decided to look for alternative lyrics because the originals are just so dark (obviously I hope they find someone to love in addition to me someday!). I will use your verses starting tomorrow! <3

2nd verse I created for my son:
The other night dear as I lay.... ... you in my arms.
And when I woke dear you were bedside me,
So I pulled you close and held you tight.

My old pal Alex McKie from (the) Felling - Tyneside used to sing....

You are my Woodbine, my Wills's Woodbine
My box of matches take my whisky awayto light my pipe
My bottle of whisky that makes me frisky
Oh please don't take my whisky away....

It always bothered me that this original version didn't rhyme"

The other night dear,
As I lay sleeping,
I dreamt I held you in my arms.
When I awoke dear
I was mistaken
So I hung my head and cried.

Instead I sang

The other night dear,
As I lay sleeping,
I dreamt I held you in my arms.
When I awoke dear
I was mistaken
SoI hung my head and cried.

But after reading the submission by GUEST, Guest above, I believe I'll sing

The other night dear,
As I lay sleeping,
I dreamt of you and all your charms.
When I awoke dear
You were beside me,
And I held you in my arms.

I remember from WW2 years (I'm 87) something like this:

You are my Woodbine, my double Woodbine,
You make me happy when skies are grey (or something),
My Senior Service,
Don't make me nervice,
Don't take my matches away.

(Senior Service was a "better" Wills cigarette than Woodbine, which was the cheapest. The Senior Service meant the Royal Navy- there was a tobacco called Navy Cut). Nervice is nervous, of course.

You are my Woodbine my Double Woodbine
My glass of brandy, my cup of tea
My drop of whisky that makes me frisky
Please don't take my woodbine from me.

Remembered in Craigmiller, Edinburgh 20+ years ago by a woman who remembered she and fellow ATSs singing it as they marched in 1945.

Some years ago someone asked for alternative verses for some children to sing a dogs funeral. That thread doesn't seem to be up in the related threads list
