I called my B & N outlet and they don't know of it. Could I have accurate title and author, possibly publisher. Thanks. |

A nice gentleman named Jeff Walker replied to my inquiry about the history of Celtic songs. Jeff didn't give the exact name of these books, but he said that it's a 3-volume set on Scottish folk songs. They contain words, chords & melodies, with historical notes in the back. Jeff said it's about $15.00 for the set. I haven't had a chance to call Barnes & Nobles yet. When I do, I will share the info with you. We live in Dallas, TX, so the Barnes & Nobles here is a fairly large store, and I've found their salespeople to be very helpful. I thought B & N would have the information in their computer but evidently not. The book could have been on their remainder list but still there should be some record of it. I'm not a musician myself but I'm a very good audience and enjoy Celtic music immensely. Must be in the genes. |

11 Mar 97 - 01:56 AM (#3007) Subject: RE: Scottish Folksong Book-Barnes and Noble From: walkerje@aviano.af.mil OK as promised, here's the info on the folk song books I got from Barnes and Noble: "Traditional Folk Songs and Ballads of Scotland" (in 3 volumes) by John Loesberg, published by Ossian. They have main offices in Cork, Edinburgh, Loughborough, and Loudon (New Hampshire). I got mine from Barnes and Noble in about October 1996 for about US$15. I don't know which catalogue it was because I get everything rather late here in Italy. We have really used these books quite extensively (e.g., Burns Night, preapring for St Patrick's Day gigs). We use them for lyrics (my wife and I), guitar chords (me) and melody lines for flute or penny whistle (my daughter). They also include some (limited) historical notes on many of the songs. If you can get the publishers name and phone number, provided it's not a bargin book, (a limited print run done with the intention of being out of print quickly) you could call them up and ask if they have any left. This is often the case. Books that are unavailible due to the distributer being out of stock or not reordering because it was a small publisher have the best chance here. However, if the book has recently gone out of print, it is possible that the thing is still hanging around in a publisher warehouse being used as a convient footstool, and they generally are more than happy to sel these copies off to the earliest caller/desperate collecter/desperate folkie/only person they can fool into paying full price plus shipping. Anyway, point is, if you can find the publisher, any local B&N can give you their number and it can't hurt to see if the pub has a spare copy or two hanging around. Good hunting. Catfeet |
