We occasionally communicated with Dermot about his years with Ryan's Fancy (1970-1984) and the many songs the group popularized in Newfoundland. I will miss his inquiring mind.

Here is the GEST archive page of Ryan's Fancy songs, some of which were Dermot's originals:

This is very sad news. Dermot was one of my musical heroes. Ryan's Fancy, even more than the Clancy Brothers, were the force that introduced me to traditional music when I was in high school. They had a wonderful TV show, and the music was completely unlike anything you could hear anywhere else.

Rest in peace.

Very sad loss indeed. Met Fergus last summer in Newfoundland. Heard Dermot play there as well but didn't have the opportunity to meet him. There will be celebrations all over the island. Great loss.

The East Coast Music Awards (ECMA 2007) are to be televised from Halifax, tonight, February 18 on CBC Television at 8 pm Toronto time (ET). The Show is to be hosted by The Trailer Park Boys. A tribute to Dermot O'Reilly will probably be made during the show. There's a great, fast-loading picture of Dermot on the index page of Roger Lockyer's http://ryansfancy.com/.

Thank you Ron.

When I lived in Auburn, NY I had CFC on my local cable. The hilites of my nights where watching the music shows on CBC. Ryan's Fancy and Tommy Makem and Ryan's Fancy and The Irish Rovers where favorites of mine. I also watched All Around The Circle and a few others.

It was Ryan's Fancy that I would watch without fail. Dermot O'Reilly singing Tie Me Down will always be a good memory. I am sorry he is gone.

I have dial up and it took me about 45 min to download that Utube clip. Worth every second, and GBS in the bargain, if I had a tail, it would be wagging! Now I have to get a Ryan's Fancy CD from some place!

We heard Dermot O'Reilly playing with Fergus O'Byran at O'Reilly's Pub in St John's last summer. It was our first time hearing him play and we enjoyed the music very much. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. His music spoke of Newfoundland and he was truly one of your own. He will be missed.
Sincerely

So sad to hear another old veteran of the trenches is gone. First met Dermot in 1968 when he was a part of Sullivan's Gypsies with Fergus and Don Sullivan, then later when i was assistant music director to Fred McKenna on Ryans Fancey show.
He was always the musical force in any ensemble, be it his vocals and strong guitar, not to mention his stage presence.
So long old friend.

I haven't seen Sandy McClean here for a while but I'm sure that would be a nice thing to do. Regards to Fergus from Jim Brannigan, if you see him.
