Lyr Req: Laplegged Drunk Again (Lonnie Johnson)

Subject: Lyr Req: Laplegged drunk again
From: Leadbelly

Hi friends,

long time ago, I heard this blues on the radio. It was performed by good old Lonnie Johnson and-if my memory serves me well- started as follows:

"I/I've (?) been drinking all night long, started again today
...(repeat)....
?????"

Who knows about complete lyrics? Could not find them in Mudcat's documentation.

Thanks,

Manfred

Manfred,

I Googled the lyrics and found them on this site

Laplegged Drunk Again (31st March 1938)

I been drinkin' all night long, I've started again today.
I been drinkin' all night long, started again today.
I been tryin' my best to drink these worried blues away.

Some people drink to hide their troubles, but that don't mean a thing.
Some people drink to hide their worries and troubles, but that don't mean no thing.
When you think your troubles are gone, and you find yourself drunk again.

Friends, I drink to keep from worrying, I smile to keep from cryin'.
Friends, I drink to keep from worrying, smile just to keep from cryin'.
That's why I cover my troubles, so the public don't know what's on my mind.

I said I was through with love, both whiskey, wine and gin.
I said I was through with love, both whiskey, wine and gin.
You know when I found myself, I was laplegged drunk again.

Love will make a many man drink and gamble, and stay out all night long.
Love will make a many man drink and gamble, and stay out all night long.
Love will drive you into many places, sometimes where you don't belong.

Hi Brian, thank you so much! Indeed, these are the lyrics I'm looking for.
In the beginning, I tried to find the lyrics via internet, too but this attempt wasn't successful.

Again, many thanks and a wonderful day!

Manfred,

You're welcome. I enjoyed spending some time fruitlessly searching through various transcription books I have before turning to the web - where I didn't actually expect to find. Now I'd best get back to the work I was supposed to be doing!

all the best

Brian

Now, can anyone explain what "laplegged" means?

Jim,

I've only seen the expression used in this song, but I'd guess it refers to having one leg overlapping the other, causing the drunk to stumble or fall.
