25 Feb 07 - 04:36 PM (#1979199) Subject: New festival in Devon (UK) - Dulverton From: George Papavgeris Watch this space, but a new festival is about to be sprung in Dulverton, Somerset (or is it Devon?), organised partly by the local council in association with the duo of Gill Tolfrey (she of Witches of Elswick fame) and Maurice Condie (Newcastle guitarist extraordinaire). Funding is already sorted and there will be four headline acts in concert, with a large proportion of the time planned for sessions. Maurice and Gill will be one of the four acts of course, and I understand that negotiations are underway to secure my favourite English male trad singer, JC (actually there are two, both my favourites sharing the same initials, but one is significantly older than the other; here we are talking about the younger one, not Johnny Collins). I don't know the full lineup yet, but will in a few days, and then I'll set up a festival website. Oh, I'll be there too. Being young and brave, the dates for the new festival are 27-29 July. So, if Cambridge FF is too large an insufficiently participative for you, or Warwick not your cup of tea (lovely festival though it is, I admit), then Dulverton could be the solution for you, clotted cream teas and all. I suspect that this is the case with Dulverton, that it may well be the postal address Dulverton Devon rather than the actual physical address. The post office tell people that their address is the county where the sorting office is, but many people refuse to comply. |

It's still under construction, but bookmark it and return in a few days. Booked guests so far: Jim Causley, Maurice Condie & (Magic) Gill Tolfrey, Liz Law & Terry Conway, George Papavgeris. There will be two concerts, beginning at 8pm, on Friday and Saturday, and a shorter lunchtime concert on the Sunday. There will also be workshops on Saturday at 2pm and 4pm, pub sessions from mid-morning till whenever, folkie sports (I put myself down for throwing the bodhran, but with a 12-str guitar will have to excuse myself from the guitar-stringing race). The post office tell people that their address is the county where the sorting office is, but many people refuse to comply. Yes, it's important to realise that the postal address of a place does not always tell you the county it's in for that reason. I've had many arguments about which county a place is in for that reason :-) But it seems Dulverton is in Somerset, and a quick glance seems to indicate it has a Taunton postcode, which of course would also be in Somerset, so it doesn't seem to be an issue in this case. The festival sounds good though George - must see what we've got on around that time. I need to start filling in the gaps between the fests I'm definitely going to... :-) |

The 'new' counties created in the 1970s and later are only administrative counties, and the original geographical counties remain the same. So, for example, Manchester, Liverpool, Ulverston and Barrow-in-Furness are still in Lancashire, whatever the town hall jobsworths may tell you :-) |

I remember a well known pastime as a student during rag week was the traditional 'putting a piano through a hoop' which involved breaking a piano into pieces small enough to go through a small hoop. The winning team was the one that did it in the fastest time. I can't remember where we got all the pianos from, but I don't think it was Boosey & Hawkes :-) Maybe we could have some other ideas for such sports, that could be done at Dulverton. We've had bodhran throwing and guitar stringing suggested by George. How about a shakey eggs and spoons race? You have to play the spoons in one hand and shake the egg in the other, and keep time while running. Or even when standing still. Or a Child ballad endurance test? A singer sings the longest Child ballads he can find, one after the other, and the last member of the audience to stay awake wins. Any other ideas folks? |

I addition, the guest list is augmented; it now includes 3 Mudcatters. The full list is Jim Causley / Maurice Condie & Gillian Tolfrey / George Papavgeris / Liz Law & Terry Conway / Julian Sutton & Tom Oakes / Steve Last & Christine Connolley. Also, on the Saturday there is also the Dulverton Fete taking place, with dog show, flower & produce show (and produce auction later), inter-pub tug-o'-war and *very special* a boving competition. There was such a glut in pianos that no-one wanted they were given to students to entertain themselves with (and obviously playing them was way too boring!) |

Tom Oakes & Julian Sutton were smashing, and Jim Causley effortlessly smooth as always - and very generous too, he asked me up during his concert set, to do "Traitor's Love" and "Friends Like These" together ("Traitor" is going to be in his new album, due for release in a couple of months). Great weekend, can't wait for next year's. |
