BS: Where do Birds go to Die?

This is not a new thought so let's get that issue out of the way but I still wonder why we don't see more bird carcasses than we do.

On any given seasonal day we see hundreds of birds and there are literally thousands of them out there. Why is it that we see maybe one carcass a month?

I used to hike a great deal, covering miles every day. I rarely saw a dead bird.

Why?

Various scavangers?

Birds are (usually) small, and would be removed as a food source by many animals if the bird were stationary and on the ground- as dead ones often are.

How often do you see dead mice, voles, or other small animals?

It takes a while to finish eating a deer- hence the number seen dead along roads in this area.

I once watched ( near work) a deer carcass over a week being reduced to just a skull.

Insects do a lot of the work. And all it needs is be slightly behind a bush. I don't see many either, and we have a bird feeder.

My freakin' dog eats them.

There's not a lot of meat on most small bird carcasses. They disappear quickly, small animals chew up the bones, and the feathers blow away. Not much to be disposed of, really.

Most of them don't die. I think it's their natural color.

Insects and other small critters take care of the sexton business, very quickly.

Who says they do die??? Maybe they just fly away...

(purdy silly, Bobert...)

Actually, the nocternal critters do a lot of cleanin' up whilst most of us are fast asleep...

This probally ain't a new thought so let's flippin' get THAT outta the way but I still, like, wonder why we don't see more dead people and dogs layin' around than we do, eh?

On any ushewal day I see hundreds of people and quite a few dogs walkin' around and there must be flippin' MILLIONS of 'em out there! So why is it that I see maybe one or two stiffs in a whole year??? It don't make sense. I seen a dead dog about 3 months ago at the side of the road. I ain't seen a dead person since the OPP dragged that buddy of mine, Lou, outta the lake along with his snowmobile.

I used to go downtown cruisin' a lot. Like almost every day, eh? I seen a few drunks layin' in the gutter, but I rarely saw a dead man or a dead dog.

Why?   I KNOW there are people and dogs dyin' every day, eh? It's a known fact. The OPP offisers tell me that they have seen a lotta dead poeple. I guess that is one of the benefits of bein' a cop, eh?

Well, if you have cats...it is likely that the bird will be brought to your bed or doorstep as a present.

Inside cats and dogs and hedgehogs, mostly. Flies get the ones they miss, just bones and feathers in a five days. And a beak.

You mostly see birds because they are moving, and stationary ones aren't very obvious. I usually smell them before I see them.

Birds seem to decay quite quickly so I suppose if they go under a hedge or something like that then they soon become part of the earth.

The roads down south are littered with dead dogs. Mostly hunting dogs.

Plus, the highways are strewn with flat squirrels that couldn't make a decision

I didn't realise that bids would go under a hedge - most ones I know tend to go when they are flying over me...

Where do Birds go to Die? Same place as elephants.
Ebbie, if you ever find out where it is and go there, I think you should be prepared for a fairly smelly place, and you'd be wise to watch your step.

Once I was mowing my back lawn and came across an entire fish of some sort. It was dried out, whole and attracted no flies. I live a good 10 miles from any lake or river. You just never know when something dies, where it's going to end up.

White bird,
in a golden cage,
on a winter's day,
in the rain.

White bird,
in a golden cage,
alone.

The leaves blow,
Across the long black road.
To the darkened skies,
in its rage

But the white bird just sits in her cage,
unknown.

White bird must fly
Or she will die

White bird,
dreams of the aspen trees,
with their dying leaves,
turning gold.

But the white bird just sits in her cage,
growing old.

White bird must fly or she will die.
White bird must fly or she will die.

The sunsets come, the sunsets go.
The clouds roll by,and the earth turns old.
And the young bird's eyes do always glow.

She must fly,
She must fly,
She must fly.

White bird,
In a golden cage,
On a winter's day, in the rain.

White bird,
In a golden cage alone.

White bird must fly or she will die.
White bird must fly or she will die.
White bird must fly or she will die.

In the city the birds fly into the glass windows to die.
Their bodies fall into flower beds onto roofs of lower buildings flys (maggots), rats and other birds tend to eat them quickly. In the country the birds fly into moving vehicles to die due to the shortage of large glazed areas. At least that appears to be the preference of birds in the UK.

Spring has sprung
The grass has ris'
I wonder where the birdies is?
Some say the bird is on the wing
But that's absurd.
Everyone knows the wing is on the bird.
