Stewart-

April 1st? It's a dangerous date but I'd certainly risk it to hear "Deckman" sing.

Of course, it's a long, long road from Richmond, Maine, and back...

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

"The ONLY problem I have with Reggie is that he makes me tune my guitar to his SAW!"

Just don't let him tune your guitar WITH his saw.

And you Seattle 'catters, you'd better make your reservations soon as we are beginning to fill up.

Oh, rats!   Bob, I'd love to be there for your house concert (with Reggie and Nancy).   For better (weather) or worse (missing your concert), I'll be in San Diego.

I hope my consolation prize will be getting to jam with Amos, Hugh (The Banjoest), and the gang in Balboa Park that afternoon.

Knock 'em dead, Bob!

Stewart, just be glad Reggie doesn't take his saw to your guitar instead of having you tune the guitar to it.

It's less than a week to the concert and we're close to a full house.
So you'd better get your reservations in soon, all you Seattle 'catters.
And if you come, you can be one of the first to get Bob's new CD

Last Sunday we had 43 people in our house for Bob's concert. It was our first house concert in this house and we filled it about to capacity. Everything went well - Bob was great as usual, lots of good food followed the concert, and afterwards about a dozen people stayed for the 'hoot.' Reggie Miles joined Bob for a couple songs with his musical saw. As Bob began singing the sun came out - something very unusual for Seattle, it only happens once or twice a year here!

Our next house concert will be on Sunday, June 24th when Jed Marum will be our guest (after his performance the previous day at the Scottish Highlands Games near Tacoma, WA). It will have the same format - a 3 pm concert followed by a light supper and then a 'hoot.' (PM me for information and reservations)

Here's a review of the concert by David Perasso, a member of the folk music community in Seattle.

Cheers, S. in Seattle

Review of Bob Nelson's House Concert, April 1, 20007

I entered the beautiful Broadview home of Stewart and Betty Hendrickson not knowing what to expect. I had heard Bob Nelson several times at jam sessions and knew of his sense of humor and his folksy style. But what would a complete concert be like?

I went up stairs into the comfortably full living/dining area, sat down and chatted with some friends. A short time later, Stew introduced Bob and the fun began.

Bob started with a rendition of the folk classic Cotton Eyed Joe and from the moment he started, until the last song, he played the audience like a finely tuned instrument. We were laughing (in most of the right places), humming and singing along and otherwise enjoying song after wonderful song.

Delivered in a style reminiscent of Woody Guthrie and Utah Philips, Bob's songs are mix of true folk songs, old and new. There was something for everybody. Hilarious sing alongs, funny stories, serious a capella ballads, and lilting melodies were mixed together in a way that both flowed easily and had plenty of variety.

There were a few songs that stand out in my memory of the concert: The hilarious Chicken Song, with back up vocals by Bob's two granddaughters, Rachel and Anya. A wonderful rendition of the classic ballad Lady Mary, sometimes known as Palace Grand. And the opener of the second set, one of my favorite sing alongs, Brazos River.

Bob also sang a version of Jesse James that he learned from relatives in Mississippi. Jesse James was a local folk hero in those parts, and Bob's story of how he sang the "wrong version" of the song to a group of locals, was wonderfully told. He was backed up on the song by by Seattle's own master of the musical saw, Reggie Miles, who added the sweet tones of the saw to an already enjoyable performance.

It was a concert I will remember for a long time. I enjoyed it, too. :-) David

It was an unexpected treat to hear that bit from the concert -- which I wish I could have attended. From all the reports it was every thing I thought it would be.
Thank you, Stewart, for posting it.

Betty and Stewart Hendrickson certainly did a very fine job in hosting my concert. It's not an easy task to invite 50 people into your home and provide all the necessary ingrediants like: good food, a welcoming environment, indoor plumbing. But they are pros at this now, after hosting Charlie Noble's house concert a while back. When Jed Marum comes this June, I'm sure he'll be delighted with his reception.

This was also the release of my first CD. I have a very few left available. If you want one, just PM me. This first edition is titled:
"SONGS I SING AFTER DARK!" Here is the play list;

COTTON EYED JOE/I COME FOR TO SING

Being half-way around the world, there was no chance of my attending.

BUT!

I am one of the lucky ones to have received one of Bob's CDs! And all I can say is GET ONE!

Bob is what mudcat is really all about and now that he's preserved (no not in aspic, at least not yet) on his first of what will hopefully be many more recordings, it means folks will enjoy him long after (if they remember not to use his CD as a coffee coaster) we're dust.

Bravo Deckman and a Huge Thank You to Stew for helping to make it possible.

..xx..e
