07 Mar 07 - 04:54 PM (#1989908) Subject: BS: Happy International Women's Day From: hilda fish Happy International Women's Day. On this day I am thinking of all the wonderful women in my life, my friends, my colleagues, my sisters, nieces, great nieces, daughters, daughters-in-law, aunties, mother, oh so many women. I am also realising how inspired I am by the many creative, intellectual, warrior, nurturing, challenging, bumptious and downright obnoxious and argumentative women who live in my times and who have lived in times immemorial. Once again, Happy International Women's Day and thank-you for being part of this wonderful sisterhood of women in my life and in women's history. May we continue to create and equal tomorrow by living an inspiring and equal today. Dr. Pam Johnston |

Some were public figures (artists, doctors, lawyers), others made jams to raise funds for small community organisations, but they all were 'Movers & Shakers' in their local communities. Happy International Women's Day to all movers & shakers around the world. sandra |

07 Mar 07 - 06:53 PM (#1990024) Subject: RE: BS: Happy International Women's Day From: katlaughing To All of MY Women Friends: (from an email forwarded by my sister) I Wish you Enough! (AND then some!) Recently I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport. They had announced the departure. Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the mother said, "I love you and I wish you enough". The daughter replied, "Mom, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Mom". They kissed and the daughter left. The mother walked over to the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see she wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to ! intrude on her privacy but she welcomed me in by asking, "Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?". Yes, I have," I replied. "Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?". "I am old and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is - the next trip back will be for my funeral," she said. "When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, 'I wish you enough'. May I ask what that means?". She began to smile. "That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone". She paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail and she smiled even more. "When we said , 'I wish you enough', we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them". Then turning toward me, she shared the following as if she were reciting it from memory. I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear. I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting. I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye. She then began to cry! and walked away. They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them but then an entire life to forget them. luvyakat |

08 Mar 07 - 06:57 AM (#1990330) Subject: RE: BS: Happy International Women's Day From: Sandra in Sydney Tonight we listened to speeches by 2 women. One is a journalist of 30+ years standing, & spoke of her experiences which included being the first woman journalist in several workplaces, including a TV program. I missed the other speaker's occupation but it was obvious she was a young mother, multiskilling. Childminding arrangements had fallen apart at the last moment, so she had baby on one hip, and 5 year old hanging around her legs, trying to get her attention as she made her speech. sandra |

09 Mar 07 - 02:42 PM (#1991761) Subject: RE: BS: Happy International Women's Day From: GUEST,mg I happened upon two remarkable women yesterday: one was Queen Rania of Jordan who was on a Yahoo website asking for input from young women. She is a force to be contended with, and it does not hurt that she is a true beauty, like movie star beautiful. The other was Suse ?? Orman, the financial guru who was talking about empowering women financially and had some very inspiring and good points. My favorite women of the decade are the Native Australian grandmothers who went into drug dens and horrible awful places where their grandsons were using drugs and living very squalid lives...they went in their and dragged them out by the scuffs of their necks...awesome. There are some impressive women out there and more to come..I like the one..Ellen Johnson..from LIberia...and was very impressed by Mary RObinson of Ireland...in US I like Maria Cantwell and Olympia Snowe and Tipper Gore...who else...oh lots. mg mg |
09 Mar 07 - 03:21 PM (#1991810) Subject: RE: BS: Happy International Women's Day From: Jean(eanjay) mg - I hadn't heard about these grandmothers before. I had heard about a mother who insisted the police get her son out of a crack house and to do this the police had to promise not to prosecute anybody else in there; the rest were happy to oblige. You're right, it is awesome and it is great to have a day where we can remember these remarkable women and all remarkable women. |
09 Mar 07 - 05:17 PM (#1991939) Subject: RE: BS: Happy International Women's Day From: Cats A couple of months ago I was running a women's day in Devon and one of the activities I ran was to identify a women, living or dead, who had been an inspiration to them, a piece of music / art / poetry that had been an inspiration and one event which had made an impact on their lives. Huge amounts of discussion. Mine were My Gran who was a suffragette and been in Holloway on hunger strike so women and working men could get the vote, closely followed by Rosa Parks, the 'art' would be the poem 'First they came for the Jews', and the event.. this was difficult as it was a toss up between my father taking me on my first demonstration in Grosvenor Square outside the American Embassy and the putting up and taking down of the berlin Wall. Who would your inspirational woman be? |
10 Mar 07 - 04:32 AM (#1992350) Subject: RE: BS: Happy International Women's Day From: Liz the Squeak My inspirational woman is a conglomorate - she's the woman left behind to run the country whilst the men go off to war. She's the woman who carries on regardless when the world is disintegrating around her ears. She's the woman who respects her fellow human. She's the woman who continues to care and nurture and shape the lives of others. It's impossible to narrow it down to one particular woman, there have been so many who have had an influence on our lives, simply by living to the best of their abilities. LTS |
