U.K. folk sessions in May -

Hi all, I'm escaping to the U.K. May 3, with a week to work my way up to the Holmfirth festival (in Yorkshire) and then on to Scotland for another week or so . . . Have lots of ideas -- I know Cornwall isn't exactly "on the way" to Yorkshire, and May isn't the month for the Wadebridge festival, but remembering some great sessions there at the Ship Inn, I'm tempted to head that way first -- and I'm also wondering if you guys have any nuggets of info to share. Suggestions for traditional music on the other side of the Channel are welcome too, as I'm flying back in mid-June from Nice (closest airport to my adopted village of Saorge in the maritime Alps) . . . Scotland and France finally on the same trip, hooray!

If you're in London on Sunday 6th May, I recommend the Traditional Music session at Borough (near London Bridge)

I think the Rochester Sweeps Festival is also that weekend and it's just a short hop (sorry) down to Kent.

You'd be very welcome to drop into Shammick Acoustic Sessions is on Saturday 12th May in Combe Martin, North Devon, which is a beautiful bit of the country to see, quite apart from the music. Bideford Folk Club is on a Thursday, and there are quite a lot of other things going on in the area.

PM me when you've firmed your dates up, and I'll give you more details.

Barbara

The Fox and Hounds weekend of Singing is 11/12/13 May and is on the border of Cornwall and Devon. We go to the pub on Friday and leave on Sunday and between times we take over the skittle alley and sing. No guests, no concerts. There will be a sing on the top of the Tor behind the pub on Sunday morning earlyish which is always stunning. The pub has its own campsite / hotel rooms / bunkhouse and the whole weekend costs £5 plus your own choice of accommodation. As it is the 10th we will be having birthday cake on Saturday night and singing Happy birthday to us! pm me for more info or if you need help to get there. You'll get to meet loads of 'Catters too....

Thanks all!
Righ now I'm leaning strongly toward the Fox and Hounds weekend of singing instead of the full-blown festival at Holmfirth. So much simpler and I know I'll be missing some wonderful festival singers (like Craig, Morgan, Robson!) but, they have songs out on CD too . . .   So anyway, after flying into Heathrow (ugh) it looks like I will be heading through Kent to Devon and Cornwall
Thanks again for all the info thus far!
Any mudcatters in France?

And you would be very welcome at Bideford Folk Club on the Thursday night (10th May) on your way down to the Fox and Hounds. Bideford is on the north coast of Devon, almost into Cornwall.
Sadly I'll miss you at the Fox & Hounds and if you come to Bideford, cos I'll be going to Upton Festival and then up to Holmfirth.
Bideford FC is mainly a singaround, weekly at the Joiners Arms starting a little after 8.

Enjoy your trip
Sue
