Subject: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: Rick Fielding Date: 20 May 99 - 08:07 AM Naturally the idea for this came from the Lee Marvin/Wanderin' Star, thread. Of course easy targets like William Shatner (a proud wig wearing Canadian) come to mind, but I'm thinking more along the lines of Kirk Douglas singing a hearty Hollywood chantey ("Got a Whale of a Tale..") in 20000 Leagues under the Sea. Wait, got another one: Fess Parker, as Davey Crockett (don't try and take HIS guns away!) singing "Farewell to the Mountains". That one made me cry when I was about ten.
Now that I think about it, they weren't too bad. Anybody recall any real stinkers? |

From: alison Date: 20 May 99 - 10:29 AM Hi, Tom Cruise in Top Gun, doing "you've lost that loving feeling", in a variety of diferent keys (all in the one verse.).... but I agree with Captain Kirk, in whichever one it was they sat around singing "Row, row, row your boat," (??Star Trek 5??) I liked the way he couldn't keep his shirt on for an entire episode **grin**(... please Trekkies... I know this is an exaggeration... and I know you can quote exact numbers of times he whipped his top off....... but I already live with one, who is a tadge miffed because they took off Babylon 5 and put the cricket on instead tonight!!!) slainte alison |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: Margo Date: 20 May 99 - 11:12 AM When the movie of Dicken's "Oliver Twist" came out I was appalled at the boy they had chosen to play Oliver. His singing is so weak and breathy It made me sick. I think I was 15 when it came out. Quite the critic, eh? Well, when I was in grade school I was treated to seeing "Oliver" on stage in detroit with an all star cast. I had high standards. Margarita |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: SeanM Date: 20 May 99 - 01:48 PM I'd really like to nominate almost the entire cast of 'Paint Your Wagon'. I've seen it twice (once someone tricked me, once to win a bet that I could sit through it again). YIKES! This movie gets it's own appendix in the great big book of 'What the Hell were we thinking?!?'... M |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: Moonchild Date: 20 May 99 - 03:05 PM My nominees are Lee Majors singing the title song to "The Fall Guy" and Chuck Norris singing the title song to "Walker, Texas Ranger." moonchild |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: DonMeixner Date: 20 May 99 - 06:02 PM My favorite actor singing badly scene: Rip Torn and John Candy sailing into the sunset in a Pelican pram. Both a little shitfaced and I quote very broadly. "Gee, Scully, Know any real sailor songs?" Candy asks. " No. Just this old one me mither use to sing to me when I was a lad." Torn begins in a great piratical voice. "Love, shining and new, get on board we're expwcting you" "The love boat will be sailing soon.........." and they sail off into the sunset. Now how about a thread with singers acting badly. Don |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: Llanfair Date: 20 May 99 - 06:44 PM Well I'm peeved about the cricket being on instead of Babylon 5. And Iagree about Leonard Nimoy. But what about actors who are obviously dubbed, like Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. They cast someone who cant sing in a musical!!! |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: The Shambles Date: 20 May 99 - 07:59 PM Don't all actors sing badly? As part of the training, they are taught to project the voice and the technique of singing, but not all voices are pleasing to the ear..... They CAN sing but maybe some shouldn't. |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: John Hindsill Date: 20 May 99 - 08:50 PM Fadac-You may not have liked John Wayne's singing, but that wasn't his fault. Smith Ballew was Singing Sandy, the voice. BTW, altho' we know those scores of films as Singing Sandy, he was only Sandy in one or two; he was singing Randy or singing John or singing whoever in the rest. SeanM you are dead right on about Paint Your Wagon. I love the play and have seen it several times. Mrs. John and I would have walked out of the movie, but we were at a drive-in...so we drove out! Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: alison Date: 20 May 99 - 09:30 PM Hi, Paint your wagon had one redeeming factor..... and that was the Howard Keel look-a-like who sang "they call the wind Maria".. great song. But, yes the rest of the movie was an ordeal. I always thought Mark Lester was a poor choice for "Oliver" too, everyone else had strong voices, his was very wimpy. But what about Harrison Ford (be still my beating heart) singing "What a wonderful world" in "witness"? Slainte alison |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: Don Meixner Date: 20 May 99 - 09:58 PM For some reason I seem to recall it was Harve Presnell as Partner singing in Paint Your Wagon. But that could have been a road show. The original broadway guy to sing Wandering Star was Howard Keel I'd bet, or maybe it was Zero Mostel :-) . But then I never liked the show at all so I didn't pay much attention. Don |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: Rita64 Date: 20 May 99 - 10:18 PM Ooohhhhhh - definitely Vanessa Redgrave (no, the glam beehive hairdo does not excuse poor vocals) in the movie version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Camelot". Incredibly appalling. BLEUGH BLEUCH PTOOEY! What were the producers thinking? |

From: casey Date: 20 May 99 - 11:21 PM Harve Presnell as "Rotten Luck Willie" sang "They call The Wind Maria" in the movie. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band performed that great classic-- "Hand Me Down That Can Of Beans"--A great musical--not quite as great as Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but great! casey |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: Don Meixner Date: 20 May 99 - 11:23 PM Hello Fair Youngmaid, Actually it was Richard Harris who was Arthur in the film. Sir Richard was on Broadway. That part seems to call people who really aren't singers. But I saw Richard Harris as Arthur in Syracuse some time back. He was great! He talks off a song better and with more feeling than many singers can sing it. Don |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: catspaw49 Date: 21 May 99 - 12:47 AM We got plenty of bad examples here. I always enjoyed actors who sang badly and knew it and were tremendously funny in the process...such as Jimmy Stewart, probably in his late sixties or early seventies, surprising Carol Burnett on her birthday playing the piano and singing "Ragtime Cowboy Joe." He had tried hard to avoid any singing in his movies, only having to do so twice for more than a bar or two. Sometimes you're pleasantly surprised too. A few months back, TNN aired a Roger Miller special that included music from his broadway show about the Mississippi River and Huck Finn. John Goodman reprised his role as Pat Finn, Huck's Dad. I really enjoyed his rendition of "Dagggum Gummint." But for the worst of all time, let me cast my vote with many of you for the entire movie cast of "Paint Your Wagon." Indeed, what were they thinking? Mario, I too wonder if it was as P.J. O'Rourke described the intro of the '59 Cadillac. The first one rolls off the line into a waiting circle of marketers, designers, engineers, and other execs. There is a full minute of silence and then a small voice in the back row expresses everyone's collective thought..."My God, what have we done?" catspaw |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: McMusic Date: 21 May 99 - 05:51 AM Robert Mitchum singing "Thunder Road" in the movie of the same name. Came out in the late 50's. My best friend's dad owned the local drive-in and it played there. I had nightmares about that song until 1974. |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: DonMeixner Date: 21 May 99 - 11:08 PM I have always liked Robert Mitchum's singing. He put out a couple of records, one was a calypso album. "Back to back, belly to belly at the Zombie Jamboree." Don |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: casey Date: 22 May 99 - 09:27 PM Like some other things---BAD singing is better than no singing at all. I think the bad singing in Paint Your Wagon added to the character of the movie. It was a fun movie ---not meant to be taken seriously. If I'm sittin' around a campfire singing "Wand'rin' Star" I'm not worried about how I stack up to Lee Marvin. If I've had enough to drink to try "They Call The Wind Maria" I just hope everyone's nodded off or never heard Harve Presnell. casey |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: Peter T. Date: 25 May 99 - 09:45 AM Actually, LLANFAIR, Audrey Hepburn had rather a nice voice (Mancini said she did Moon River better than anyone), and was royally miffed that they dubbed her voice, since she spent months working on it, and there is a recording of her quite nice versions of one or two of the songs (I should point out that I was always besotted with AH). What of Natalie Wood in West Side Story then (speaking of dubbing and bad acting!) As to Camelot, what of Franco Nero, Sir Narcissist himself? (And Vanessa Redgrave went off with him!!!?Radical women have no taste in men, just ask Germaine Greer). But I must say that Richard Harris' singing in Camelot was an all time low, worse even than VR. (Modred come back, all is forgiven....) Yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Actors singing BADLY (partly B.S.) From: Mike Billo Date: 25 May 99 - 10:38 AM There is an album devoted to this theme called "Golden Throat" on Rhino records. The worst is Jack Webb, of "Dragnet", singing "Nancy with the laughing eyes". Oh Brother!! |
