Subject: Lyr Req: Do Lord | away beyond the sea From: DrWord Date: 15 Mar 05 - 03:58 PM OK I may be conflating two, or even three songs here. One verse goes: Papa writes to Johnny. but Johnny can't come home (3x) Johnny's been out on the chain gang too [or "so"] long. The other song [same tune?] Has a refrain or chorus which goes [In my memory]: Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me (3x) Look away beyond the sea. I know there's a 'catter who will understand my thread title AND know the song(s). I messed around in advanced search in DT to no avail ... cheers dennis |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Do Lord | away beyond the sea From: Azizi Date: 15 Mar 05 - 04:58 PM Hello Dr. Word! I have fond memories of this song from my childhood & youth. I'm not sure if this was the way it was alway sung at church, but I after the last "way beyond the blue", in my head I always hear this bass voice adding the word "horizon" . That word is elongated to four syllables to become 'hor-i-i-zon' with the voice going down at the end in typical fashion. I don't know the "Papa writes to Johnny" line or the other one, but that religious song could easily be secularized with those lyrics like so: Papa writes to Johnny but Johnny can't come home Papa writes to Johnny but Johnny can't come home Papa writes to Johnny but Johnny can't come home He's way beyond the blue. [and then the next verse ending with "roam" or another word that rhymes with "home" or what about: Papa writes to Johnny but Johnny don't write back Papa writes to Johnny but Johnny don't write back Papa writes to Johnny but Johnny don't write back He's way beyond the blue. [that next verse would end with railroad track or some other word that rhymed with 'back'] Of course I could have said "John, he don't write back" but it would end up being sung as Johnny anyway.. And of course I could just leave this song alone and stop procrastinating.. Good idea. Good luck finding the song you're looking for! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Do Lord | away beyond the sea From: DrWord Date: 15 Mar 05 - 09:47 PM Mary--thank you! I guess I will have to do more forum searches when the DT search comes up empty. Of course I realize many lyrics are in threads that aren't in the DT. Thanks for the links. Hi Azizi! Yes, of course, the BLUE! and then the bass hor-i-i-zon!!! Yes, Mary, you did see that I was conflating tunes; but according to one of the posters on the other thread, the tune was used for many songs, so I guess [hope?] that explains it. Be kind to yourselves dennis Oak in the Acorn Labyrinth |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Do Lord | away beyond the sea From: Azizi Date: 15 Mar 05 - 10:50 PM It's interesting that the two spirituals that are being discussed at this time are 'Do Lord remember me' and 'Where shall I be'... And then comes Dr Word who includes in his post a link to a labyrinth. This seems fitting to me since when we find ourselves in a maze unsure of where we are and what direction we should go, many of us would ask for God to remember us and offer us help. And maybe we receive Divine Intervention without asking for it. I'm one of those persons who would much prefer that the road I walk be straight-but it never is. But a labyrinth?? I'd not thought of that symbol before for spiritual growth... As I live, I learn. Thanks, Dr. Word **** One passage that I clicked on in the introduction to labyrinths that was provided spoke of the need for chaos in an orderly world, and a need to suspend time.. If I were to translate that statement into the language of astrology, there is a need for Uranus to shake Saturn out of its rigid adherance to materialism and status quo-ness in order to usher in a new world order-the Aquarian age of brotherhood and sisterhood that the R&B group The Fifth Dimensions sung about in the 1960s. I appreciate the opportunity to learn more about the labyrinth symbol and how it might be used to help me and other people get where we need to go. Azizi |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Do Lord | away beyond the sea From: Azizi Date: 15 Mar 05 - 10:56 PM I hasten to add that I don't believe that there is only one road and only one destination to the TRUTH. Given that I hold this truth to be self evident For Me, the labyrinth and astrology and other studies and tools and resources may not be of interest or of value or necessary for others. And, as far as I'm concerned, "that's all good." As one R&B song said 'Do your thing' as long as it is for the Good. |
