It´s A lovely song but short. Does anyone know of other verses or where I can hear other versions.P.S. this is not the same "As I Roved Out" that Planxty recorded, nor is it the lovely slow song recorded by Andy Irvine. It has only two verses, ia probably a fragment of a ballad- but maybe not. At the time I felt as you do, that it should be longer, so I wrote another verse. Nowadays I love the little song as it is and no longer sing the written verse. Ironically, it was recorded some years ago (can't recall- I believe it may have been Bobby Clancy, and perhaps for Folk-Legacy?), and he used my verse, thinking it was traditional! So, maybe by now it is, but originally Sarah's version had but two verses- all it needs, really. |

She says no as she's a crofter's/farmer's daughter and he's a gentleman's son - with an interesting twist, if he was a crofter's son as well, then the answer would be different. As a matter of fact I think I recorded it on a tape and it might be on Kate Akers site Cantaria at www.cantaria.com . I can't remember how to do the clicky and I'm at work so can't mess around with it now. If somebody can do the clicky I'm pretty sure it's there with the lyrics. |

I'd guess Padraigin may have learned it from him - she's Len Graham's wife, and the three of them have exchanged song material a fair bit. |

She has been a Mudcatter for quite a while now and has graced us with her wit, wisdom, and knowledge on quite a number of occasions. She has, indeed, spent time with Sarah Makem, as well as any number of the greatest trad singers in several traditions. That is because she is among her peers when she does so. And she has never "hid her light under a bushel". My guess is she will answer your questions when she sees it. She is, without question, one of the most important figures in folk music in the world today. And one of the finest people I have ever had the privilege to share communication with. Mick |
