Subject: Lyr Req: Creatures place in the choir
From: GUEST,Maggie

Hi everyone,
I hope someone can help me. About 2 years ago I took my son to a children's folk concert and the musicians played a song that we can only remember the chorus to and are still singing it 2 years later! Maybe someone can help me fill in the rest of the song. Here's the chorus:

All God's Creatures have a place in the choir.
Some sing low and some sing higher.
Some sing out on the telephone wire.
Some just clap their Hands, paws or anything they got now.

Sorry but that's all I can remember.Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have done lyric searches without any luck.
Thanks

Guest Maggie:

A search on Google for "Place in the Choir" lyrics" got the complete song lyrics in the first 3 hits, plus a midi file. I strongly recommend this search engine. Be sure to enclose phrases in quotation marks.

If your son enjoys it he might also like the picture book version. Check your local library or bookstore.

Little point here, a search for a song title only works if you know the song title in the first place.

Sometimes, song titles are not what you think they are - The Green Fields of France for one - most people know that as Willy McBride, rather than the proper title, so try to be a little less abrupt when you suggest using search engines please.

And it's "critters" rather than "creatures" which is why you may not have found the lyrics during a web search.

G'day LTS,

And it (Eric Bogle's song about WW I) is No Man's Land, not Green Fields of France or Willy McBride! (Although the other guesses at the title persist.)

Regard(les)s,

Bob Bolton

Maggie,
one of the things about searches for lyrics it to try for alternate words from within the song. If you can single out a single line of text which is clearly not in most other songs, you can find it without the proper title. Our ears don't always hear the same. I probably would ahve thought "creatures" as well.

Liz, as Bob has pointed out, No Man's Land is the actual title that Eric Bogle gave it. Green Fields of France is what some Irish singer made the title. Lots of people call it Willie/Willy McBride, because of the identifier of the name within the song.

I don't know whether to praise Google for its new trick of suggesting alternate spellings, or to condemn it because it no longer insists that you spell something CORRECTLY before getting hits.....still 'critters' and 'creatures' are too far apart in this case to have made much differences anyway. It is still a good way to check on alternate spellings and regional variations.

Lin's advice was clear, not abrupt, and was helpful advice.
Some people don't know much about search engines and how to use them - and so it is always a good thing to post a reminder/clarifier.

Note that Lin tried the search herself, and explained how good the results were - then recommended its use.
I'd say appreciation was deserved, not a slap in the face.

Note also that Lin said nothing about typing in the title - in fact she just typed in a representative snippet.
And I think all the posters gave very helpful advice. To find a song, it's best to use a phrase that is distinct and cannot be mistaken. Song titles are often misleading.
