My true love and life partner, Byron Smith, died in my arms Saturday night/early Sunday morning of what appears to have been a heart attack. We had just had a wonderful day of dancing and making music at the Strafford Ball, and he was happy and at peace. He lived each day as if it was a gift.

Byron played both Anglo and English concertina, button accordion and shuttle pipes, as well as guitar and bass. He played with Carol Compton in the duo, "Morning Star" and had recently formed another duo with Melanie Everard to satisfy their mutual love for ancient Irish airs. He was a scholar of Bunting, Petrie and Joyce, played for two morris teams, loved dancing, good friends, good music, and me.

He leaves two grown sons, Evan and Aaron, who are like family to me. I am grateful for their friendship and for the love and support we are receiving from our local community.

I am devastated, and just ask for prayers and support. I probably won't check in much for awhile, but I'll trace this thread and read it when I can.

Allison, my good friend never met, you are in my prayers. We come to know, after a fashion, many folks here at Mudcat. Peg said it very well--from your description, that last day was truly a gift. When my parents died, one went suddenly, no warning, the other through a painful illness. The shock is hard to deal with, but the swiftness was preferable. Byron's passing was what one can only hope for when that time comes, in the arms of a loved one after a marvelous day. When you get past the sharp pain and ache you'll be able to look back at that day as something very special.

When my mother was on her death bed
I was reading the Tibetan Book of Living
and Dying and also Ram Dass's "Still Here"
I found comfort in some of the images there
which i will share with you here:
one was that when the spirit leaves the body,
it experiences a relief as if removing a
shoe that is uncomfortably tight.

When i think of that and take a deep breath,
I try to imagine the joy of a spirit freed
from the bondage of this body.

Allison asked me to let everyone know that the funeral will be Friday, the 10th, at 4pm EST, which is Mudcat time, too. She invited those of us who would like to light a candle, sing a song, etc. at that time. She said there would be lots of music, friends, and such there.

She also wanted us to know that she has had company of support since this happened...friends, women mostly; the kind who come in, take care of you, your kids, and all of the daily things which need looking after, as well as help with the deeper issues surrounding such loss.

At some point, you might find some comfort in this story of what I experienced when someone I loved passed on unexpectedly. It's not a prescription or a proclamation, just a story, but it's apparently helped some people in difficult times -- it certainly helped me.

Thank you so much everyone. I'm still in shock and pain, with little sleep and no appetite, but I'm sustained by the worldwide enormous hug and prayers.
It would ease me to know that folks are singing and making music for Byron. He especially loved the ancient Irish airs and the gentle music written for English country dance, but above all he constantly urged those around him to "listen to the truth that's inside you"- so play the music and sing the songs that are inside you, and I know he'll be listening with his sweet smile!

I am so very sorry to read this thread, to learn of this loss and suffering of the heart. Everything changes, but not love. The hurt will pass away, but not the love.

I am just seeing this and it saddens me greatly. Having met Byron a couple of times and having seen the look on your face the first time you introduced him to me and other times when you spoke of him truly makes me feel your loss more deeply. My thoughts and my prayers are with you as well as his children and yours. I hope that I will see you at NOMAD next month so a hug can maybe make us both feel a little better. I hope you will remember how many people are better people because he was in their lives.

Allison, I'm remembering the Friday night you taught "Lay Down, Sister" ("Bid You Goodnight") to the singing group at Seven Arrows so many years ago. Those were such good times -- thanks mainly to the wonderful song leader who brought good cheer, confidence and an easy comfort with music to the sessions. Here is an excerpt from some of my writing on yesterday's events:
        The memorial service was amazingly beautiful. The lovely little country church was packed, folks from all aspects of his life spoke and gave tribute, I was able to speak (without a total breakdown) of his love and our commitment and how he was at peace. I was able to sing some of Be thou my vision and all of Amazing Grace. The final gift was my dear friends playing as a postlude the waltz I wrote for him when we were just a few months old. It's just a pretty little thing, but 5 amazing musicians on recorder and piano, harp, guitar and bass turned it into gold. When I learn a little midi, I'll post Byron's Waltz here.
        The ceilidh/reception was a bittersweet time of music, hugs and tears. My chorus sang, a trio of friends did too; the morris teams sang and sang. A friend played uillean pipes, the guys in Byron's band played Ashoken farewell for the first time in their lives, not knowing how much Byron had enjoyed his few years at Ashoken camp. Serendipity has punctuated this week.
        I was prostrated by sobs an hour before the service. A dear friend who is also my pastor led me through to a new place where I knew and know now without a doubt that Byron is still with me, on the inside instead of the outside, but right here all the time. Suddenly I went into a "zone" of peace and serenity that carried me through the service and the reception after. I felt that I was carried on angels' wings the whole time. I truly believe it was knowing how many places on this planet had candles lit and loving thoughts turned towards Byron and me. Thanks to all of you, dear friends        

        I am still broken and unstable, but the times of peace are growing longer. Please keep me in your hearts and prayers.

Thank you, everyone. I am just beginning to learn how to live in the belly of the beast called bereavement. The hardest thing now is that my wonderful group of friends has gone back to their own lives now, assuring me that I can call at any time when in need. But I can't call, can't reach out, and I live for the phone calls, cards and emails that trickle in.
I can listen to the sound of a concertina without completely falling apart, I'm back to work and the daily routine, but I'm still in pain.
