Hmmmm. Apparently, this song hasn't been posted here. The only mention of it is a message from Judy Cook, saying she had recorded it. I found the lyrics at her Website, http://www.judycook.net/. Here recordings are wonderful, but the way.
-Joe Offer-

ONCE I HAD AN OLD GREY MARE

Once I had an old grey mare
Once I had an old grey mare
Once I had an old grey mare
Her back wore out and her belly bare

Tad a liddle dink dink
Tad a liddle day
Tad a liddle dink dink
Tad a liddle day

Then I turned her down the creek (x3)
Purpose of a little green grass to eat
Tad ...

Then, oh then I took her track (x3)
Found her in a mud hole flat on her back
Tad ...

Then I, feeling very stout (x3)
I took her by the tail and I hoist her out.
Tad ...

Then I thought it was no sin (x3)
I took out my knife, and I skinned her skin
Tad ...

Then I tied it in a noose (x3)
Purpose of to make my winter shoes.
Tad ...

Then I hung it in a loft (x3)
Along come a rogue and he stole it off
Tad ...

Durn the rogue that stole it off (x3)
Left my toes all out to frost
Tad ...

From Judy Cook's CD "If You Sing Songs..."

Judy's notes: My sister and I used to sing this song when we were little girls. I was delighted to find it in Sharp's Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians, which had another verse.
the only songbook entry I can find reference to is the one in Sharp. does Sharp have tunes?

Joe, you beat me to it. Then another one. Norman Blake's version is in Tombob's Bluegrass and Old-Time Country Songs for Flatpickers (PDF; p. 49)

OLD GRAY MARE
Norman Blake

Once I had an old gray mare
Once I had an old gray mare
Once I had an old gray mare
She couldn't see and she couldn't hear

I took her down in the field to plow
I took her down in the field to plow
I took her down in the field to plow
That damned old fool she didn't know how

I got down on my knees to pray
I got down on my knees to pray
I got down on my knees to pray
And I scared that damned old fool away

I jumped up and followed her track
I jumped up and followed her track
I jumped up and followed her track
And I found her in a mud hole flat on her back

Once I had an old gray mare
Once I had an old gray mare
Once I had an old gray mare
She could not see and she couldn't hear

Thanks, guys. The info I have came from a Mike Seeger web site and describes it thusly. About an old mule that got religion and was baptised, then backslid and eventually made into shoe leather.

This is close to the Judy Cook Version. I may have to break down and buy the CD. Thanks again to all. Jim

I should have paid more attention, Jim. Mike, Peggy, Barbara, and Penny recorded a Rounder album in 1992 called Animal Folk songs for Children. It includes all 43 songs from the book of the same title written by their mother, Ruth Crawford Seeger. The album includes 15 additional songs, including "Once I Had an Old Grey Mare." The lyrics are interesting, but a little hard to understand. Here's my best shot at a transcription.

ONCE I HAD AN OLD GREY MARE

Once I had an old grey mare
Once I had an old grey mare
Once I had an old grey mare
Her back wore out and her belly bare

Tad a liddle dink dink
Tad a liddle day
Tad a liddle dink dink
Tad a liddle day

Old turkey buzzard come a-flying by (x3)
Says, your mare will surely die
Tad...

If she dies I'll tan her skin (x3)
If she lives, I'll ride her again
Tad...

She got so sick I couldn't ride (x3)
Bones stuck up right through her side
Tad...

Then I turned her down the creek (x3)
Purpose of a little green grass to eat
Tad ...

Then I followed up her track (x3)
Found her in a mud hole flat on her back
Tad ...

[instrumental break]

Then I, feeling very stout (x3)
Took hold of her tail and hoisted her out.
Tad ...

Then I thought it was no sin (x3)
I hoist up the knife, and I skinned her skin
Tad ...

Then I put it in some noose (x3)
Purpose of to make my winter shoes.
Tad ...

Then I hung it in a loft (x3)
Along comes a rogue and stole it off
Tad ...

Darn the rogue that stole it off (x3)
Left my toes to the winter frost
Tad ...

Ruth Crawford Seeger wrote American Folk Songs for Children, Animal Folk Songs for Children, and American Folk Songs for Christmas. Peggy, Mike, and other family members recorded them all, and they're all wonderful recordings.

Hi, Jim - I think Mike Seeger may be talking about another recording. I bought Animal Folk Songs for Children from Dick Greenhaus at Camsco about a year ago. While Mike was involved in Animal Folk Songs, it was a woman's voice on this particular cut. The CD booklet says Peggy Seeger sang that cut.
I wonder where they found the song. It's not in my condensed edition of Sharp, but I understand there are two versions in English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians. Anybody know if this song appears anywhere else? I'm looking for the tune, so I can transcribe it into a MIDI.

Well, I found a tune, but I don't have the volume that has the lyrics (so all I got was one verse and the chorus).
-Joe Offer-

Once I Had an Old Grey Mare

Once I had an old grey mare
Once I had an old grey mare
Once I had an old grey mare
And I saddled her and rode her there.

CHORUS
Not gonna work for a nickel no more
Not gonna work for a nickel no more
Not gonna work for a nickel no more
Not gonna work for a nickel no more

THE OLD GREY MARE

(Sung by Harry, Ralph and Dayton Norton at Rocky Fork, Tenn., Aug 31, 1916)

Once I had an old grey mare,
Once I had an old grey mare,
Once I had an old grey mare;
Saddled her and rode her there.

When she got there she got tired;
She lay down in the old court-yard.

Then they begin to sing and pray;
She jumped up and ran away.

Then I went down the road on her track;
Found her in a mud-hole flat on her back.

Then I begin to feel very stout;
Seized her by the tail and jerked her out.

Then I begin to think it no sin;
Jerked my knife and begin to skin.

Then I put her old hide in a loft;
Up came a nigger and stole it off.

Ole' Turkey Buzzard
Ole' Turkey Buzzaarddd...
flaa-yin', flyin' hii--ghh

He's just-a watin'
ole buzzard's just-a wa-atinnn'
Watin' for someone down below to die (Jose climbs some high notes here)
Ole' buzzard knows that he can wait
for every mother's sons's got a date
with him...

gold gold gold
people are dyin' for
gold gold gold
people are fighting (killing) and dying for gold

Repeat Para 2

Hee hee, sure's a great song. The lyrics above are apocryphal at best and from my memory of Jose Felciano's rendition of this fun song. Brings to mind many a campfire and badly tuned guitars but not enough of the song to be more accurate. Gives you sumpin' to humm in the bathromm anyways... :P

My "Old Grey Mare" has this form:

Oncet I had an old grey mare
Oncet I had an old grey mare,
She neither could see, she neither could hear,
Taddle diddle dink t' ma toodey-O.

Then I hitched 'er to the plow
Then I hitched 'er to the plow-
Swore by grab she didn't know how!
Taddle diddle dink t'ma toodey-O

Etc.   This was recorded on my 1974 Pacific Cascades album, "Jean Ritchie At Home," but has been out of circulation many years. Does anyone know Joan Lowe, the owner of Pacific Cascades Recordings? I think she's still in business.

hello everyone, This is Bala - on mail - bala101@lycos.com.   Pretty unfrotunately I have ben unable to access the song for OLD TURKEY BUZZARD - of Mackenna's Gold. Any on can provide a link, will greatly appreciate it. Even if the link for mp3download is a pay site, please do let know. If any of you have this song do send me, and I am willing to any number of songs from the 50s to the 80s, typically oldies. I do have the movie on DVD, but I do not want to use the clip for the song. Love Jose Feliciano's rendition of this song, I have most of Feliciano's song including "RAIN", and his solo version of : Yesterday.

Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from any of my good friends out on this forum. My best wishes

Bala

Old Turkey Buzzard
Old Turkey Buzzard
Flying, flying high
He's just awaiting
Buzzard's just awaiting
Waiting for something down below to die
Old buzzard knows that he can wait
'Cause every mother's son has got a date -- a date with fate
with fate

He sees men come he sees men go
crawling like ants on the rocks below
The men who scheme, the men who dream and
die for gold on the rocks below
Gold, gold, gold -- they just got to have that
Gold, gold, gold -- they'll do anything for gold

Old Turkey Buzzard
Old Turkey Buzzard
Flying, flying high
He's just awaiting
Buzzard's just awaiting
Waiting for something down below to die

Old buzzard knows that he can wait
'Cause every mother's son has got a date -- a date with fate
with fate

He sees men come he sees men go
crawling like ants on the rocks below
a wiff of gold and off they go to die like rats on the rocks below

Gold, gold, gold -- they'll do anything for gold
Gold, gold, gold -- they'll have Mackenna's Gold

The MIDI of the Sharp tune (if taken faster) sounds very close to the tune of "Golden Ring Around My Susan Girl" as sung by the Golden Ring folks. It varies only in the last line.
