Subject: DTADD: ONCE I HAD AN OLD GREY MARE From: Joe Offer Date: 06 May 03 - 12:46 AM Hmmmm. Apparently, this song hasn't been posted here. The only mention of it is a message from Judy Cook, saying she had recorded it. I found the lyrics at her Website, http://www.judycook.net/. Here recordings are wonderful, but the way. -Joe Offer- ONCE I HAD AN OLD GREY MARE Once I had an old grey mare Once I had an old grey mare Once I had an old grey mare Her back wore out and her belly bare Tad a liddle dink dink Tad a liddle day Tad a liddle dink dink Tad a liddle day Then I turned her down the creek (x3) Purpose of a little green grass to eat Tad ... Then, oh then I took her track (x3) Found her in a mud hole flat on her back Tad ... Then I, feeling very stout (x3) I took her by the tail and I hoist her out. Tad ... Then I thought it was no sin (x3) I took out my knife, and I skinned her skin Tad ... Then I tied it in a noose (x3) Purpose of to make my winter shoes. Tad ... Then I hung it in a loft (x3) Along come a rogue and he stole it off Tad ... Durn the rogue that stole it off (x3) Left my toes all out to frost Tad ... From Judy Cook's CD "If You Sing Songs..." Judy's notes: My sister and I used to sing this song when we were little girls. I was delighted to find it in Sharp's Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians, which had another verse. the only songbook entry I can find reference to is the one in Sharp. does Sharp have tunes? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: ONCE I HAD AN OLD GREY MARE From: GUEST Date: 06 May 03 - 07:15 PM Thanks, guys. The info I have came from a Mike Seeger web site and describes it thusly. About an old mule that got religion and was baptised, then backslid and eventually made into shoe leather. This is close to the Judy Cook Version. I may have to break down and buy the CD. Thanks again to all. Jim |

Subject: Lyr Add: ONCE I HAD AN OLD GREY MARE From: Joe Offer Date: 07 May 03 - 03:23 AM I should have paid more attention, Jim. Mike, Peggy, Barbara, and Penny recorded a Rounder album in 1992 called Animal Folk songs for Children. It includes all 43 songs from the book of the same title written by their mother, Ruth Crawford Seeger. The album includes 15 additional songs, including "Once I Had an Old Grey Mare." The lyrics are interesting, but a little hard to understand. Here's my best shot at a transcription. ONCE I HAD AN OLD GREY MARE Once I had an old grey mare Once I had an old grey mare Once I had an old grey mare Her back wore out and her belly bare Tad a liddle dink dink Tad a liddle day Tad a liddle dink dink Tad a liddle day Old turkey buzzard come a-flying by (x3) Says, your mare will surely die Tad... If she dies I'll tan her skin (x3) If she lives, I'll ride her again Tad... She got so sick I couldn't ride (x3) Bones stuck up right through her side Tad... Then I turned her down the creek (x3) Purpose of a little green grass to eat Tad ... Then I followed up her track (x3) Found her in a mud hole flat on her back Tad ... [instrumental break] Then I, feeling very stout (x3) Took hold of her tail and hoisted her out. Tad ... Then I thought it was no sin (x3) I hoist up the knife, and I skinned her skin Tad ... Then I put it in some noose (x3) Purpose of to make my winter shoes. Tad ... Then I hung it in a loft (x3) Along comes a rogue and stole it off Tad ... Darn the rogue that stole it off (x3) Left my toes to the winter frost Tad ... Ruth Crawford Seeger wrote American Folk Songs for Children, Animal Folk Songs for Children, and American Folk Songs for Christmas. Peggy, Mike, and other family members recorded them all, and they're all wonderful recordings. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Once I Had an Old Grey Mare From: Joe Offer Date: 07 May 03 - 07:03 PM Hi, Jim - I think Mike Seeger may be talking about another recording. I bought Animal Folk Songs for Children from Dick Greenhaus at Camsco about a year ago. While Mike was involved in Animal Folk Songs, it was a woman's voice on this particular cut. The CD booklet says Peggy Seeger sang that cut. I wonder where they found the song. It's not in my condensed edition of Sharp, but I understand there are two versions in English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians. Anybody know if this song appears anywhere else? I'm looking for the tune, so I can transcribe it into a MIDI. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: DTADD Version: Once I Had an Old Grey Mare From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 08 May 03 - 10:04 AM THE OLD GREY MARE (Sung by Harry, Ralph and Dayton Norton at Rocky Fork, Tenn., Aug 31, 1916) Once I had an old grey mare, Once I had an old grey mare, Once I had an old grey mare; Saddled her and rode her there. When she got there she got tired; She lay down in the old court-yard. Then they begin to sing and pray; She jumped up and ran away. Then I went down the road on her track; Found her in a mud-hole flat on her back. Then I begin to feel very stout; Seized her by the tail and jerked her out. Then I begin to think it no sin; Jerked my knife and begin to skin. Then I put her old hide in a loft; Up came a nigger and stole it off. The lyrics above are apocryphal at best and from my memory of Jose Felciano's rendition of this fun song. Brings to mind many a campfire and badly tuned guitars but not enough of the song to be more accurate. Gives you sumpin' to humm in the bathromm anyways... :P |
