Does anyone know the background to this song? I was told Joe had cataracts, but the lyrics in the database make him sound very dapper. By the way, thanks for all the help and opinions re "Jimmy Crack Corn". My written-in thanks didn't make it through. Sheila

Thanks, Cletus, for providing that blue clicky. That thread originated when I was going though a hard time and I missed it I guess. I love that song, but I was under the impression that there was the one Burl Ives recorded, which is mentioned in the thread, and another with a different tune and a faster beat used for square dances.

Apparently the tune to "Cotton Eyed Joe" was originally based on the Irish tune "The Mountain Top."

Fantastic tune, just back from Nashville where I got Bob Wills version, glad to hear that it may be an Irish tune!

So, does "The Mountain Top" have lyrics of its own, or is it a stand-alone tune?

As far as I aware it is a standalone tune. If you can get hold of "The Chieftains 10", both are played on the recording.
