First, because he was so young. Second, because prostate cancer is so often treatable and survivable, even in later years, if diagnosed early. And also because I really enjoy so much of Dan's music and appreciate his poetry and musicality, even though he hasn't been considered "cool" since the early '80s. Not every song of his was a classic, of course, but I do think he left behind a few timeless songs. By the way, as we're now in the Christmas season, I really recommend checking out Dan's Christmas album, which I discovered about a year ago. It has some very traditional Christmas songs, such as "This Endris Night" (beautiful), some wonderful instrumentals, and a couple of very nice original Christmas songs. One of the nicest Christmas albums I've discovered in recent years. Genie |

For a good clip of him singing this song, see this. I recommend reading his bio on his website. I didn't know that he loved nature and lived on a mountain in Colorado. At this time, Dan, Steve Stills, and several members of the Dirt Band were in residence, and the tales of parties and music sessions are the stuff of legend. This place and era was the inspiration for Fogelberg's album Nether Lands. Stills had a 4WD Mercedes that would be found on many a winter morning parked in the middle of the street or nestled in a snow drift, and Fogelberg said that finding Steve's car was usually a hell of a lot easier than finding Steve. |

I don't know how they found it ~ it's the summary of a three-year-old Dave Letterman program. Please don't be offended; irreverent as it might be (not so much to Dan as to an even more highly respected Personage), this story is pretty damn funny... Dave takes time out to tell a funny George Miller story he heard over the weekend. (George was a dear friend of Dave's who passed away last month. He had been on Dave's show 50-60 times') The story goes that George's on again/off again girlfriend (we'll call her Linda) finally had enough of the on again/off again relationship. Linda tells George that she wants to start seeing other guys. George becomes incensed. Later that night he sneaks back to her apartment and goes into her room. He finds a picture of Jesus on her night table. George takes a pen and scribbles "Go to Hell" across the front. When Linda gets home she notices the photo and, suspecting George, calls the police to report it. The cops go over to George's house to get his side of the story. When asked if he wrote "Go to Hell" across the picture of Jesus, George said, "Jesus Christ? I thought that was Dan Fogelberg." |

Some are of others singing his songs, some are Dan singing with the posters' home-made videos in the background. I haven't checked them out because I'm on dial-up right now. I've also been finding a lot of tribute columns and comments on line. It seems there are many, many whose lives were touched by Dan's music and storytelling in ways like those described here. Bill Hahn, I too would of course include Steve Goodman among the special music talents who left us way too early. Today I just learned that Dan Fogelberg, like Steve, was actually performing at local coffeehouses in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, while I was in graduate school there at the U of Illinois. So sad to realize I came so close to being able to see and hear them in their pre-fame days but I never did. |

When I think of Maine I can't help but recall my time in the USNavy when we anchored out in the bay at Rockland for a bit of R&R and took the launch in to enjoy the Lobster Festival... ...and Genie, I kinda saw Dan Fogelberg in his "pre-fame days" back in 1975. For my birthday I was taken to an Eagles concert at the Masonic Auditorium in Detroit, Michigan; I didn't pay much attention at the time to the long-haired singer who played guitar and piano as an opening act for the big guys - who were yet to be the superstars they became. It was in 1977 that I moved to Texas and started dating a young lady who introduced me to Dan Fogelberg's records and I immediately fell in love with his stuff - and realized that that was the guy who opened for the Eagles while I didn't pay attention. I saw Dan several times over the years but my favorite concert was a solo show at the Bronco Bowl in Dallas, Texas around 1994 or so. He sat center-stage in a big ole' comfy easy-chair with a small table on the side. His guitar attendant would bring him a fresh instrument after each song and every once in a while he'd get up and move to the piano for a song or two. I was quite fortunate to get a seat in the fourth or fifth row directly in front of him. "...between the worlds of men and make-believe, I can be found." |

Dan did, indeed, write Sutter's Mill, a glorious song which inexplicably hasn't become a standard. This is how he describes the song in the sleevenotes of his brilliant box set: "Movie time again. Strange how most of my Maine songs have been written in Colorado and some of my most western pieces (like this one)were written in Maine.I wrote this on my birthday 1984. It's not completely historically accurate but I plead poetic licence." Speaking of "movie time", my favourite Dan piece is Tucson Arizona (Gazette). An extraordinary example of storytelling in song. I guess my memory's slipping. when I heard that song on the High Country Snows album, I loved it so much that I checked its attribution, and I could have sworn I found that someone else wrote (or at least co-wrote) it. But maybe I'm getting it mixed up with "Go Down Easy," which, as I recall, was someone else's composition that Dan recorded for that album. Obviously, Dan's own account of his songs origins trump my less-than-perfect memory. *g* I agree, Sutter's Mill should be a folk/country standard by now. Another Fogelberg composition from High Country Snows that, while it enjoyed brief radio play in the 1980s, never really became well known is "Shallow Rivers." I'm surprised there aren't more bluegrass pickers doing that song -- although, to be fair, Dan's wide vocal range often makes his songs difficult for mere mortals to sing, as is the case with "Shallow Rivers." That one uses pretty much my entire pitch range (as do "Run For The Roses" and many other Fogelberg songs). G |

There was a bin they had that had "cut-out" LP's of unknown artists for $1.99 and I would on accasion take a chance on a "cut-out" and sometimes they were good, like Teegarten and Van Winkle" and sometimes they weren't... So, I pick up this LP becasue I'm attracted to the cover art which is a pencil self portrait of the artist and it's a fine drawing so I bought the LP , I swear, for the drawing... Well, I took that LP home and put it on the turntable and out came the the most beautiful song I tghink I have ever heard entitled "The River"... Still gives me goose bumps to this very day... I went around trying to tell people about his guy and people were going "Yeah, right?" but I made believers of all my frineds who heard it... I can't say that I followed Dan thru all these years but I do know that that LP is one of the 5 I'd take from my 1500 or so collection to the proverbial desert island if I could only have 5 LP's... He was a beautiful poet and songwriter and I had the privilege of seeing him in concert twice in the 70's. His music was an inspiration to me and it deeply touches me that he is no longer with us physically, but I find solice in knowing that I can still feel him and his beautiful soul through his music that I play. My x-husband and I had not spoken in 25 or more years. when Dan died I sent my x-husband a leaf and wrote on the back of it as told in his song "Souvenirs". My x-husband and I have developed a little bit of a friendship now. When we were married many years ago, Dan was one of our favorites. God gives us many gifts while we are on this Earth Plane. One of the greatest he/she gave to me was the music of Dan Fogelburg. |
