Subject: RE: Lyr req: The Boys of Barr Na Sraide From: Big Tim Date: 19 Jul 01 - 01:24 PM I first heard the version by Christy Moore, but check out the version by Sean Garvey, it's tops. The song was written by Edward "Sigerson" Clifford of Cahersiveen, Kerry. Born 1913, died 1985. (Sigerson was his mother's maiden name). His poems were published as "Ballads of a Bogman" in 1955 and is still in print, a bit of a poor man's Yeats, in my opinion, be it ever so humble, but "Barr" is terrific, means "high street or top street", incidentally, the street in Cahersiveen where he was raised, (he was born in Cork). |
