Subject: RE: Getaway 2009 - other stuff than programming From: Dan Schatz Date: 08 Oct 09 - 01:26 AM I'm glad I started the trend of dedicating songs to Kendall. It would have been a pity to be a shameless imitator! I feel like we didn't have enough time for socializing this year, what with running after our son much of the time, but we enjoyed what we had very much. It was particularly nice to Carol Rohl, one of the loveliest people I know, make it down with Gordon, and to hear her play harp with ever increasing confidence. We had a great time at the Songs for the Shower workshop, the Beggars Tramps and Bums workshop, and the small but sweet tune swap. And the Sandy Paton memorial was an hour of storytelling and reminiscing that I will treasure. We didn't catch too much of the concerts - we had to get someone to bed - but what we heard was wonderful indeed. I saw any number of good friends that I didn't even get to say hi to, but you know who you are, and I love you anyway! Dan |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2009 - other stuff than programming From: Amos Date: 08 Oct 09 - 01:52 PM Could a forty verse limit be declared? Is that heretical? This is Murka, home of fast food and the 30-second commercial. I think we should have a rule--if you can't tell the story in ten verses, trim it down!! (Actually I think it is an interesting cultural difference between the ancient oral tradition and the post-industrial sound-bite mindset.) In any case I think some boundary is in order. A |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2009 - other stuff than programming From: jacqui.c Date: 08 Oct 09 - 02:09 PM Depends on the subject. If it's interesting and enjoyable then I can listen for quite a while. If not.... However, insofar as time is an aspect both in the concerts and the workshops, I do agree that some sort of limit should be set. Otherwise not everyone can get a chance to join in the workshop sessions and the concert can just go on WAY too long. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2009 - other stuff than programming From: Nancy King Date: 08 Oct 09 - 04:12 PM I've been trying to collect my thoughts about what was "best" at the Getaway, but since it was all so splendid I'm not sure I can pick out the "best". But I'll try anyway... First of all, we had PERFECT weather for the second year in a row. Wow! We surely did miss some folks who couldn't make it (Mmario, Big Mick, George Ward, Colleen Cleveland, Dick & Marlene Levine... etc., etc.), but we had some new folks who were absolutely fabulous! What a treat to meet and hear Hilary (MGAS) and Richard! Actually, I'd met them in Portsmouth the week before, and KNEW they'd be a big hit at the Getaway. Some of us had heard Ed Norman before, and knew he was terrific, but adding Tim Wells to make the Maudlin Brothers was an extra delight -- these guys can SING! We old-timers were especially glad to have Pete the Spy with us again after an absence of 18 years; we'll be applying pressure to get him back on a regular basis! And it was great to have Carol Rohl at the Getaway with Gordon -- hope they'll both be back! The Songs from the Shower workshop, featuring all kinds of weird stuff one could never sing anywhere else, was an experiment. This was something the late Jonathan Eberhart led for many years, and it was always great -- he was terrific at coaxing bizarre things out of people's brains. We weren't sure how it would work to revive the idea, but Pete the Spy and Ken Schatz managed it beautifully. I've rarely laughed so hard! The Sandy Paton remembrance was lovely and intimate -- he surely was someone deeply loved and greatly missed. By the way, Bobert, we were NOT trying to sabotage you by scheduling you opposite the memorial -- it just happened! We'll try to do better by you in the future. I had a great time at all the workshops and concerts and late-night sings I went to -- but wish I could have been at all of them! Wouldn't it be lovely to have a whole week to do this? Sigh. Anyway, thanks to all who helped out! Nancy |

(Which says alot about how pitiful my involvement with that wonderful school is.) After introducing me to his wife as someone from the Getaway, he smiled and said, "I had a blast!" |
