Subject: ADD: Been Ridin' From: katlaughing Date: 14 Nov 99 - 12:33 AM I'll do this on the weekends when I do the Thought for a day thread, if someones elses can pick it up for the weekdays. Dick and Susan: if you don't want the Lyr Add, please let us know or whatever will work best for you. I put it in this one because I didn't find this song in there and wanted you to see it. This was Jeri's idea and she demurred saying she didn't feel competent or some such nonsense. I am sure she's got a good bit more knowledge than me, but I figure if we each just share a song that'll get it started of simple-like and we can go from there. If someone wants it done differently or whatever, PLEASE SPEAKUP! I've been sending old cowboy songs to Jon in Wales, by Voizmail, via MediaRing. He seems to be enjoying them. I didn't see it in the DT. It's one we sang in Scouts and that my dad used to sing, too. If anyone wants the tune, sendme your email and I'll do my best to croak it for you.
Been Ridin'
Been ridin' since daylight
Chorus:
Joggin' along to nowhere
There's no cabin waiting and nobody watching
Someday we'll quit ridin' the Big Boss providin'

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 14 Nov 99 - 09:44 PM Thanks kat for picking up the ball and running with it. And I like that song - my email is in bbc's list if you feel like croaking it. (But cat's don't croak, they're great singers.)
Sounds like a singing cowboy song, like Roy Rogers or Gene Autry would have sung. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: Jeri Date: 14 Nov 99 - 10:38 PM Kat - wonderful!!! (I actually have a fear of commitment. The thought of having to think something up every day was scary.) Maybe we could all share. Whoever gets a song in first wins - no fair taking advantage of time zones! And if we have more than one song per day - so what?! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: alison Date: 14 Nov 99 - 11:40 PM good idea Kat, but... there'll be a heap of threads with the same title, so they'll end up being as difficult to find as "lyrics wanted" after a while..... I would put the name of the song in the title.... slainte alison |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: katlaughing Date: 14 Nov 99 - 11:45 PM Alison, good suggestion, I thought about it, but there wasn't room. Actually, they wouldn't be the same, because each would have that day's date in them, although we could use something like SFTD for Song for the Day, then the title and date? McGrath, I will give it a go, tomorrow. Yeah, it is an old cowboy but I don't know if they sang it. I'll ask my dad next time we talk. Thanks, Jeri, I can do it the mornings I think of it, but would rather not be a hog about it; there are so many more on here who know so much more and have more to share. kat |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: Date: 15 Nov 99 - 01:33 AM Good song. Remember it from camping days in the 60's and haven't thought of it since. Have recalled the tune except for the last line of the chorus and it's driving me nuts but I'm sure it will come back. Thanks for jogging the memory. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 15 Nov 99 - 07:03 PM Song received loud and clear. As I said above, cats are great singers - even when they have colds.

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: katlaughing Date: 15 Nov 99 - 07:09 PM Jeez, McGrath! My ears aren't plugged up, I heard ya the first time!**Big Grin** Thank ya, darlin', all the same though, you might want to check your ears; that was a pitiful excuse for singing last night, so maybe ya heard something I didn't! Thanks, really, Kevin. Aine, I will get it to you later tomight, hopefully. No later than tomorrow morn. I have a couple more I guess I could use for the next couple of days if nobody else picks it up for the week. katnolongerhackingjustpluggedup |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 15 Nov 99 - 07:12 PM Song received loud and clear. As I said above, cats are great singers - even when they have colds. One down-thing with not having song title in the heading is that it won't be possible to use the Forum Search to find a song, if it doesn't get uplifted into the DT. But then that applies to any song that comes up in the course of thread drift anyway, so so what. But what I'd like to see is the kind of song-threading you get in a good song circle, where one song leads on to another, either because it's got something in common, or some kind of echoing contrast. And that would apply if it were the same person posting it, or another person.
That would suggest that it would really be one Song for the Day thread, even if broken up by the day or whatever for convenience. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: katlaughing Date: 15 Nov 99 - 08:42 PM Thanks, but I am not sure what you mean by the last sentence? |
|
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: Jeri Date: 15 Nov 99 - 09:00 PM I think he meant one thread - song of the day, with a different song each day. McGrath, I liked your idea of a song circle. But instead of just one song per day, we could have a daily song circle. One person kicks it off, and other folks could suggest songs they think of because of the first one. I think we need to have song titles in the thread title, especially if it's a new one with a "LyrAdd" prefix |
|
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: katlaughing Date: 15 Nov 99 - 09:34 PM That would be okay, except that it would make it hard for Dick and Susan to know there were songs in that one thread that needed to be added to the DT. I think it is better to have a separate thread for each day's song, like the Thought for the Day, plus if we had just one it could get mucked up and quite lengthy with multiple postings about each song.I will only put LyrAdd, if it is one I didn't find in the DT. I definitely think the song title should be int he thread title. We've done things sort of like a song circle in an informal way, but not daily. I think that would probably have to separate and there again, how would Dick an Susan know to find songs there, without a lot of time, to post to the DT, without someone extracting them, at the time? I am just thinking out loud. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: alison Date: 16 Nov 99 - 02:43 AM to be honest I don't think we need a SFTD heading.. we have enough of them as it is.... just put them in as LYR ADD...... I know people are trying to get the threads back to music...... so why not just go for LYR ADD... it doesn't need to have a date... the important thing is the song title..... if people have the discipline to post a song every day.. that's great....... but a year from now you're not going to remember what song you posted on a particular date... but you will remember the title..... dick and Susan don't seem to have had trouble finding songs in song circles in the past... in fact Dick usually appears in them to request that people post the lyrics to any songs they have mentioned which aren't already in the DT. slainte alison |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 16 Nov 99 - 02:07 PM "That would suggest that it would really be one Song for the Day thread, even if broken up by the day or whatever for convenience"
Quite right, clear as mud.
What I meant was that if there was just one song for the day going on indefinitely, it would get hopelessly long, and would take forever to load. So it would be better to have it start off anew each time a new song came up.
But, if the song-circle rule was kept to, so that each song arose out of the last one, or out of any ensuing discussion, it would in essence be a single continuing thread, even though it was broken up into bite-size chunks by the day, or by the song (if they didn't turn up daily, or if two turned up the same day.).
I think that makes sense. I mean I think what I've just written is intelligible. Whether it is intelligent is another matter entirely. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: katlaughing Date: 17 Nov 99 - 01:05 AM Thanks, Alison. I guess I am going to have to break down and learn ABC, because Alan's midis still take forever for me to load, in fact I've never had one load for me, as I give up after 3 minutes. I really appreciate your doing this. Aine, just sent it by VoizMail. Dick, thanks. I will use Lyr Add, except for songs I know are already in the DT,like the one I did for tomorrow, Pokegama Bear; then I'll just do the SFTD and date. AGAIN, IF ANYONE ELSE WANTS TO JUMP IN FOR THIS PARTICULAR DESIGNATION, PLEASE DO! Thanks, kat |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: Art Thieme Date: 17 Nov 99 - 11:35 AM So many songs!! You guys are keepin' me from a very good book. This must be a make-work project for Dick & all. Way to go. Love, Art P.S.----A question: Does putting a song in a thread, as I've done very often, make it a candidate for the big digitrad? Hope so. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: catspaw49 Date: 17 Nov 99 - 11:46 AM I'm also disgusted with this mutual admiration society of "great voices"...........Yeah, I've heard you all, and you all ARE good,...........But to hell with all of you!!!! Kiss my sagging, flat ass!!! Spaw - Whose voice is analagous to a Galapagos Tortoise in heat. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: Áine Date: 17 Nov 99 - 11:56 AM Dear Spaw, Frankly, I find the cantankerous yawping of the aged, wrinkled male Galapagos Tortoise quite attractive, especially when it is accompanied by the slapping sound of his sagging, flat ass as he toddles down the beach. -- Áine |
|
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: catspaw49 Date: 17 Nov 99 - 12:02 PM Well Aine, maybe we can toddle down to the beach together, say down around Galveston Bay? And take your great voice and apply it to "Memory Banks of Mudcat" on that thread. It kinda' requires a voice like yours. If you know Banks of the Ohio, you're set. Spaw - flap..flap..flap..flap.......... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: Áine Date: 17 Nov 99 - 01:53 PM Dear Kat, I got the words and the song -- Caty heard the vmail and said, 'That's MY song, isn't it, Mommy?' -- Well, another wonderful addition to the family songbook!! I can't thank you enough, and Caty says 'thank you', too. I'll send you one back (woman!), but do you mind if it's in Irish? I've written a lullaby (you'd be the first person to hear outside of the family) and would appreciate your input. And as for you, Coyote Catspaw of the Trembling Toucas, I'd love to sing your 'Memory Banks of Mudcat,' but, I can't remember the tune to 'Banks of Ohio' (don't sing that much down in here, ya know -- we're more likely to know 'The Slimey Banks of the Trinity'. Do you know where I could access a midi file of 'Banks of Ohio'? Then I'll give it my best shot just for you! Thanks to one and all, Áine |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: katlaughing Date: 17 Nov 99 - 03:39 PM Thank you, Aine and Caty. I would LOVE to hear your lullaby in Irish; I won't know what the words mean, but have found that it doesn't matter, as the music itself and the flow of the language is what I love. Please do send it. Thanks. Spaw, I LOVE tortoises, so 'natch I love you! I think you're just jealous about the voice love-fest because I haven't sent you any voicemail songs lately. Did I ever do the Prairie Lullaby for you and the boys? Love you, too, FINE Art! kat |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: Áine Date: 17 Nov 99 - 04:56 PM Dear Kat, Just sent you a trembling version of my lullaby -- can't ever get through the whole thing without breaking down -- you'll see why when you get the translation via email. Hope you like it, Áine |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Song for the Day - November 14 From: Jeri Date: 17 Nov 99 - 05:27 PM Spaw, I tried to record me singing your song and accompanying myself on dulcimer, but I can't seem to do both those things at the same time. Actually, I have problems with one at a time, and I don't think the song would work acapella. Maybe Bert will do it. |
