Subject: ADD: Been Ridin'
From: katlaughing
Date: 14 Nov 99 - 12:33 AM

I'll do this on the weekends when I do the Thought for a day thread, if someones elses can pick it up for the weekdays.

Dick and Susan: if you don't want the Lyr Add, please let us know or whatever will work best for you. I put it in this one because I didn't find this song in there and wanted you to see it.

This was Jeri's idea and she demurred saying she didn't feel competent or some such nonsense. I am sure she's got a good bit more knowledge than me, but I figure if we each just share a song that'll get it started of simple-like and we can go from there. If someone wants it done differently or whatever, PLEASE SPEAKUP!

I've been sending old cowboy songs to Jon in Wales, by Voizmail, via MediaRing. He seems to be enjoying them. I didn't see it in the DT. It's one we sang in Scouts and that my dad used to sing, too. If anyone wants the tune, sendme your email and I'll do my best to croak it for you.

Been Ridin'

Been ridin' since daylight
Through shadow and sunlight
And now in the twilight
We're travelin' slow
The coming stars guidin'
We'll keep on a ridin'
Down the trail where the sun hangs low.

Chorus:

Joggin' along to nowhere
Joggin' along all day
Joggin' a long to nowhere
We sure know the way.

There's no cabin waiting and nobody watching
And no one to welcome me homeward and so
We'll ride on together whatever the weather
Down the trail where the sun hangs low.

Someday we'll quit ridin' the Big Boss providin'
And then we'll be leaving the trail that we know
The sun will be setting and we'll be forgettin'
Down the trail where the sun hangs low.

Thanks kat for picking up the ball and running with it. And I like that song - my email is in bbc's list if you feel like croaking it. (But cat's don't croak, they're great singers.)

Sounds like a singing cowboy song, like Roy Rogers or Gene Autry would have sung.

Kat - wonderful!!!

(I actually have a fear of commitment. The thought of having to think something up every day was scary.) Maybe we could all share. Whoever gets a song in first wins - no fair taking advantage of time zones! And if we have more than one song per day - so what?!

good idea Kat, but... there'll be a heap of threads with the same title, so they'll end up being as difficult to find as "lyrics wanted" after a while.....

I would put the name of the song in the title....

Alison, good suggestion, I thought about it, but there wasn't room. Actually, they wouldn't be the same, because each would have that day's date in them, although we could use something like SFTD for Song for the Day, then the title and date?

McGrath, I will give it a go, tomorrow. Yeah, it is an old cowboy but I don't know if they sang it. I'll ask my dad next time we talk.

Thanks, Jeri, I can do it the mornings I think of it, but would rather not be a hog about it; there are so many more on here who know so much more and have more to share.

Good song. Remember it from camping days in the 60's and haven't thought of it since. Have recalled the tune except for the last line of the chorus and it's driving me nuts but I'm sure it will come back. Thanks for jogging the memory.

Thanks, really, Kevin. Aine, I will get it to you later tomight, hopefully. No later than tomorrow morn. I have a couple more I guess I could use for the next couple of days if nobody else picks it up for the week. katnolongerhackingjustpluggedup

One down-thing with not having song title in the heading is that it won't be possible to use the Forum Search to find a song, if it doesn't get uplifted into the DT. But then that applies to any song that comes up in the course of thread drift anyway, so so what.

But what I'd like to see is the kind of song-threading you get in a good song circle, where one song leads on to another, either because it's got something in common, or some kind of echoing contrast. And that would apply if it were the same person posting it, or another person.

That would suggest that it would really be one Song for the Day thread, even if broken up by the day or whatever for convenience.

I think he meant one thread - song of the day, with a different song each day.

McGrath, I liked your idea of a song circle. But instead of just one song per day, we could have a daily song circle. One person kicks it off, and other folks could suggest songs they think of because of the first one.

I think we need to have song titles in the thread title, especially if it's a new one with a "LyrAdd" prefix

That would be okay, except that it would make it hard for Dick and Susan to know there were songs in that one thread that needed to be added to the DT. I think it is better to have a separate thread for each day's song, like the Thought for the Day, plus if we had just one it could get mucked up and quite lengthy with multiple postings about each song.I will only put LyrAdd, if it is one I didn't find in the DT. I definitely think the song title should be int he thread title.

We've done things sort of like a song circle in an informal way, but not daily. I think that would probably have to separate and there again, how would Dick an Susan know to find songs there, without a lot of time, to post to the DT, without someone extracting them, at the time?

I am just thinking out loud.

to be honest I don't think we need a SFTD heading.. we have enough of them as it is.... just put them in as LYR ADD...... I know people are trying to get the threads back to music...... so why not just go for LYR ADD... it doesn't need to have a date... the important thing is the song title.....

if people have the discipline to post a song every day.. that's great....... but a year from now you're not going to remember what song you posted on a particular date... but you will remember the title.....

dick and Susan don't seem to have had trouble finding songs in song circles in the past... in fact Dick usually appears in them to request that people post the lyrics to any songs they have mentioned which aren't already in the DT.

"That would suggest that it would really be one Song for the Day thread, even if broken up by the day or whatever for convenience"

Quite right, clear as mud.

What I meant was that if there was just one song for the day going on indefinitely, it would get hopelessly long, and would take forever to load. So it would be better to have it start off anew each time a new song came up.

But, if the song-circle rule was kept to, so that each song arose out of the last one, or out of any ensuing discussion, it would in essence be a single continuing thread, even though it was broken up into bite-size chunks by the day, or by the song (if they didn't turn up daily, or if two turned up the same day.).

I think that makes sense. I mean I think what I've just written is intelligible. Whether it is intelligent is another matter entirely.

I can't thank you enough, and Caty says 'thank you', too. I'll send you one back (woman!), but do you mind if it's in Irish? I've written a lullaby (you'd be the first person to hear outside of the family) and would appreciate your input.

And as for you, Coyote Catspaw of the Trembling Toucas, I'd love to sing your 'Memory Banks of Mudcat,' but, I can't remember the tune to 'Banks of Ohio' (don't sing that much down in here, ya know -- we're more likely to know 'The Slimey Banks of the Trinity'. Do you know where I could access a midi file of 'Banks of Ohio'? Then I'll give it my best shot just for you!

Thanks to one and all, Áine
