Subject: Alabama Bound - the other one
From: GUEST,Don

Reading the thread on "Alabama Jubilee" made me think of a song called "Alabama Bound". There is a song by that name in the DT, attributed to Leadbelly (I think I have it on a recording by Doc Watson.)

But I'm thinking of a different song. I believe it starts something like "I'm Alabama bound, don't want no heebie-jeebies hangin' around ..." and there is also a line about "I'll put my tootsies in an upper berth."

Anyone have it?

This sounds like the sort of song sung whilst waving a straw boater about. The tune I recall is up tempo and usually called "Alabammy Bound". Not the Leadbelly one, of course. Sorry not to have been more help.

From the sheet music at Mississippi State University:

ALABAMY BOUND
Words by Bud DeSylva and Bud Green; music by Ray Henderson, ©1925.

VERSE 1: Goodbye, blues!
Birdies are singin’ ev’ry old thing in tune.
Goodbye, blues!
Nothin’ but laughter mornin’ and afternoon.
Saw a rosebud in a store,
So I’m goin’ where there’s more.
Gooodbye, blues!
Troubles are over; I’ll be in clover soon.

CHORUS: I’m Alabamy bound.
There’ll be no “Heebie Jeebies” hangin’ ’round.
Just gave the meanest ticket man on earth
All I’m worth
To put my tootsies in an upper berth.
{Just hear that choo-choo sound!
I know that soon we’re goin’ to cover ground.
And then I’ll holler so the world will know:
“Here I go!”
I’m Alabamy bound.}*

PATTER: I can hear that choo-choo whistle blow.
Watch that engine when we start to go.
Now we’re in Baltimore,
Knockin’ at Dixie’s door.
What’s that, Bill?
Louisville.
We passed that before.
Fields o’ cotton tell me where I am.
Hear that feller yellin’ “Alabam!”
Mammy, Mammy,
Get your kisses ready for yo’ honey lamb.
{I’m just a lucky hound
To have someone to put my arms around.
That’s why I’m shoutin’ for the world to know:
“Here I go!”
I’m Alabamy bound.}*

VERSE 2. Hello, joy!
Never knew I would, never knew I could smile.
Hello, joy!
Tho’ I’ve been tearful I see each cheerful mile.
I’ve been dreamin’ dreams each day
Of that sunshine far away.
Hello, joy!
No one’s been sadder; now I’ll be glad awhile.

* Note: the last 5 lines of the “patter” are sung to the same tune as the last 5 lines of the chorus.

Thanks for bringing back some memories... I'd forgotten all about this song. While it's not Alabama related, I have a great love for Sailing Down To Chesapeake Bay. Don't know if anyone else is a big Clancy Hayes, Bob Scobey fan, but they recorded many songs of this type. Ocean Roll is another great one..

Jerry

Hi Don... It's a great song, much fun to sing, rollicking and room for a BIG FINISH! I first heard it in The Purple Rose of Cairo and couldn't leave it alone until I;d worked out all the chords.

Supposedly lyrics in the tune, Alabama Jubileeinclude a medley of 2-3 tunes (?) Way Down On the Levie, In Old Alabamy, Waiting on the Rob't
E Lee, if not, am I confusing the three tunes in the medley above.?
I can't find lyrics for above individually or in group on Mudcat.
