I recently ran across some Joe & Eddie stuff - There's a Meeting Here Tonight, Children Go, All My Trials, etc. It sounded as good now as it did in the 60's. As I recall, either Joe or Eddie was killed. Does anyone know what happened to the other one?

refresh. If you haven't heard any of these guys, try to find some (ebay?). Became kind of a hot night club folk act - whatever that is - in the 60s.

Sorry dw, I thought you were refering to Joe & Eddie Grundy, although come to think of it, Joe did used to sing a bit. John

I have always wondered the same thing. I owe a debt to Joe and Eddie for introducing me to some of the better songs I do. They are among the few folk acts I ever went out of my way to go see (when they performed at the Cellar Door in Georgetown). It was an inspiring performance. I hope to collect more of their music.

P.S. The bit about seeing few folk acts has changed, BTW. Now there are lots of people I would want to go see. I was a lot poorer in the Joe and Eddie days.

They were among my absolute favorites - EVER - just the greatest. I recently got a CD from - as I recall - amazon.com. It had a lot of writing about them, described the circumstances of the death. Single car accident, no booze or drugs, just young & liked to drive fast - since I spent my own time in a Naval hospital from one of my motorcycle crashes, I see nothing unusual abt that, just tragic bad luck.

They didn't mention what happenned to the other member of the team & I often wonder - kinda like wondering abt Beverly Bivens (lots of rumors there). Sure would like to hear from more 'catters re this. They were California guys, wonder if Joe Offer knows anything abt this question.

Joe Gilbert died in a car crash in Los Angeles on August 6, 1966. Eddie Brown tried to continue as a solo act, but didn't succeed. (The All-Music Guide says Eddie died June 14, 1974, but something makes me think they may be mixing him up with another Eddie Brown.) In 1967, GNP Crescendo came out with a very nice album called The Best of Joe & Eddie (click) which is now available on CD.You can find samples from their CD here (click). I can't say I really like their recordings - they're just bit too "commercial"-sounding.

I don't have any first-hand California knowledge of this group. I hadn't crossed the Rocky Mountains until 1970, when I came here to California from Wisconsin.

Ay, Joe, thar's where y'd be incomplete! The recent CD compilation is much more than the original GNP Crescendo "Best of Joe & Eddie" LP. The CD is very good and contains 26 tracks from their recorded legacy. They had 6 or 7 albums for GNP Crescendo between 1962 and 1966. They excelled at rousing gospel numbers, "There's A Meeting Here Tonight" and "Didn't It Rain" are two of the best. Mike Settle of the New Chirsty Minstrels wrote "Sing Hallelujah" specifically for them although it was also recorded by others. They recorded Dylan's "Blowing In The Wind" several months before Peter Paul & Mary in 1963 and then convinced there manager not to release it because they didn't like the song. They also had one of the earliest versions of McColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"

Here is a story I once heard about Joe's car crash:

Joe was driving an open-top car of some kind - possibly a VW with a sun roof or maybe it was some brand of convertable. His infant son/daughter was in the passenger seat. This was (I believe) before the advent of enforced seatbelt/child safety seat usage. The baby was miraculously hurled from the car at the moment of impact and landed in the arms of a passing stranger.

I wish I could remember where I heard or possibly read this story. It's a good one - especially if it is true.

Joe and Eddie did a concert at the old Cellar Door in Wash DC in late 65 that I attended and somewhere I still have their autographs on the cover charge folder. I thought their "First Time" was one of the best I'd heard (over the Kingston Trio and others) until I heard Roberta Flack at a club just down the street from the Cellar Door some years later (can't remember the club other than it started with Mr. ____'s). It seems to me they also did a concert or two at local universities, like American or Georgetown, but that is a long time ago. I also remember putting seat belts in my 57 Fiat Abarth after the accident.

Eddie Brown is alive and well, he was my roommate in mid-wilshire district of Los Angeles, along with his son, Chris and dog Domino back in the 1980's. He currently resides in Santa Barbara with his long time ladyfriend. His brother Oliver has a band called Gravity that he works with, Eddie went on to become a successful record producer with such greats as Irene Cara, etc. Eddie is also a wonderful friend and father to his two children, Tracy, and Christopher. You can catch Gravity playing around the Los Angeles area, they are very good. All in all Mr. Brown is alive and well living his life to the fullest and enjoying every moment.
