Subject: Lyr Add: CHILLY WATER (spiritual) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 07 Jan 05 - 09:39 PM Lyr. Add: CHILLY WATER Chilly water, chilly water, Hallelujah to that Lamb; I know that water is chilly and cold And a hallelujah to that Lamb, But I have Jesus in-a my soul And a hallelujah to that lamb. O chilly water, chilly water, Hallelujah to the lamb. Chilly water, chilly water, Hallelujah to that Lamb. I know that water is chilly and cold And a hallelujah to that Lamb. In-a that ark, the little dove mourned, And hallelujah to that Lamb; Christ Jesus standing as the corner-stone, And hallelujah to that Lamb. Chilly water, chilly water, Hallelujah to that Lamb. I know that water is chilly and cold And a hallelujah to that Lamb. Old Satan's just like a snake in the grass, And a hallelujah to that Lamb; Watching for to bite you as a you pass, And hallelujah to that Lamb. Chilly water, chilly water, Hallelujah to that Lamb. I know that water is chilly and cold And a hallelujah to that Lamb. Oh, brothers and sisters, one and all, And hallelujah to that Lamb; You had better be ready when the roll is called, And hallelujah to that Lamb. Mostly from No. 127, in "Negro Spirituals, or the Songs of the Jubilee Singers," (first included in 1892), and from "Chilly Water," vol. 2, p. 114, "The Books of American Negro Spirituals," J. W. and J. R. Johnson. Music is given in both volumes. The latter is in dialect. An arrangement I heard sung repeated the first four lines with each verse, and I have done that here. They also followed the last verse. The Satan verse appears in several spirituals. |
