It was kinda odd to get a reminder this morning on Facebook that today - 5th Feb. 2010, would have been Barry Finn's 59th birthday.
I am sure everyone will with me in saying how much he is missed, and tonight at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH, I am sure many will sing in memory to him.
I wish I could be there to take part. I am singing tonight in a totally different type of performance - a British Music Hall show - but I will be thinking of Barry.
Do sing a song for him today - even if only to yourself.

If never we return again
No more shall we tarry
We'll leave a song on the Western Wind
Sing it again for Mr Finn and haul away for Barry!

Tell ya' Barry, your birthday just ain't the same without you. But as with the above 'Catters and the many others who will post here, we are so glad that your songs and your passions will be around forever.

To that end, let me tell you that for your birthday gift this year I have reposted a few of your old posts on one of those passions...using books to sing from and a few nasty words for RUS as well (:<))

I have been humming and singing shanties for the last few days. I wondered why.

I so wanted the opportunity to sing with Barry after the comments to that affect on another thread. Was half heartbroken for my selfish self when he passed away.

Maybe someday we will sing together.

Still hard to imagine such a Force of Nature has been stilled but for what has been saved.

Last thing I heard him sing was The Sad Sweet Shores of the Callows. (You can find him singing it on You tube ) I was mesmerized.

From 9 (and a half!!!) years ago, I find this comment on the Bench Moving Shanty Session, from our Rita:

"Oh. The bench moving shanty. Who started that? Was it Jeri? No, Judy Cook, I think. I do know my husband was on the other end. You see, they had these high backed benches like church pews and there was a very long one that was on an uneven spot in the floor. My memory is a bit fuzzed here but it seems to me Barry Finn and Dani were the worst instigators of a little game that involved waiting till every one was immersed in a song, then shifting your weight, like on a seesaw, so the people at the far end of the bench would go bump in a most startling and unexpected way.

Well, what the hell were we singing? Can't remember but it has to have been loud and boisterous. Judy said, "I'm Gonna Do It," and she grabbed the back of the bench and started pushing the whole thing in a circle, pivoting on the rough spot in the floor. About six people were being taken for a ride. But it's hard for one person to get up any real speed, you see. So then Bill got on the other end, and there were other aiders and abetters, and for the entire length of one song they pushed this damn thing 90 degrees round, reversed direction, back again to Start and away we go again. It's the second silliest thing I've ever seen at a Getaway"

hehehehe. That makes me smile tonight, and miss Barry even more. Go back and read that thread, and feel some early sparky magic of the melding of fsgw and mudcat, of which Barry was such a wonderful part.

I, too, got a "reconnect with Barry Finn" message from facebook the other day. I so miss his messages that he was heading to Cameron's. I would tease him that he never got to my house--took him a bit to get it the first time, even though I show up as Cameron there...

Such a sweet man.

Every time I think of the next Getaway, the thought pops in my head "Barry won't be there."   It is still so hard to comprehend a world without him, he was so dynamic and full of life. I will go to the Getaway, but it cannot be the same. Getting older causes one to lose friends in a permanent way and lately there have been more Getaway regulars pass than I care to enumerate.

The March shanty session at the Press Room usually falls on or within a few days of my birthday...it will be odd not to see Barry there.
