it is a meadow, ley is land temporarily under grass,and it is ley land.

I can remember sorting out this one before (Leyland) when people were asking what the hell a Laylum is.

The skylark, in particular - but not exclusuvely, likes to nest in meadows - ley land - put to grass.

The Revels sing it......         "I like to hear them small birds singing, merrily among their lay-lows."    Different, but no help in meaning.          Seems to imply low bushes. Need an English colloquial specifically regional expert.

Same origin as Scots "lea rig", as in the song of that name.
