Subject: Lyr Req: a different Banks of the Lee From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 16 Dec 03 - 12:14 PM I think there are at least 3 different songs about "Banks of the Lee" /"Banks of the Lea" (the River Lee in Cork, Ireland) already covered in Mudcat. The one I seek is different. I have it on an old LP by Ann and Francie Brolly, but the record is old and scratched and I don't want to do more damage repeatedly playing the track. The tune is the same lovely air used for "Ba Loinnireach Grian an Tráthnóna", which I understand is Thomas Moore's "Has Sorrow Thy Young Days Shaded" sample lines: When I view the green hills of my childhood And the mist hanging low o'er the fields The vision I have is a fair one My home by the banks of the Lee Every man has a wish to go roaming For far foreign fields are more green Than the fields of the land he was born in, Those places he never has seen. oh how I long for my island and my old life at home by the Lee. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: a different Banks of the Lee From: GUEST,Donal Date: 16 Dec 03 - 08:50 PM Phillipa, Sorry I can't help with the song directly, but when I had a similar problem I put the song from the record onto my computer, (the process has been described here several times, notably by McGrath), and then as a WAV file or whatever, you can listen through headphones as many times as necessary. Donal. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: a different Banks of the Lee From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 17 Dec 03 - 04:46 PM Philippa There are a number of "Banks of the Lee" songs in older songbooks. Some are "Spirit of the Nation" or Young Ireland vintage, others more recent. Yours sounds fairly recent - maybe Irish-American? Thre's at least one local COrk songbook with possibilities - I'll have a look in ITMA next time I'm in Dublin, if nothing turns up here before then Regards |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: a different Banks of the Lee From: GUEST Date: 31 Jul 05 - 11:14 AM Could I see the green hills of my childhood and my old life at home by the Lee Then this northern American village would seem more like heaven to me But crowding around in my dreaming are things I no longer can see Like the places I've always been yearning since I wandered away from the Lee. Every man has a thought to go roaming but far foreign fields are more green Than the hills of the land he was born in, the places that he's never seen. They told me when leaving my Ireland a new world would open for me, But ah how I long for my Ireland and my old life by the banks of the Lee When the dustbowl has blown all around me and weary I drag from eyes Not the sand which is seeking to harm me but the stars of my blue Irish sky. This Canadian land is a fair one with work flowing plenty and free But the vision I have is a rare one, at home by the banks of the Lee. |
