I remember hearing a song long ago to the same aire as Dainty Dave.

It was more of a marching-type song and indeed , I think it had the words like "marching lines" or, "See the marching lines" somewhere in it.

Every so often I go over stuff I'd written down long ago in scrapy notebooks and this came up. So, there's not much to give a clue, but if I can find it anywhere, it's probably here.

Well there's 'Rantin' Rovin' Robin', and the parody on Burns, 'There was a Lad was Born in Kyle', both of which go to the same tune, butI don't think either contain words like you quote.

Only thing I can think of with something like "See the marching lines" is Roddy McCorley, but I don't think taht's the one you're looking for

The two tunes - Dainty Davy and Roddy McCorley do have some similarities. Just a few though. Snuffy, you may be on to something. Joy

It's used for "The Carmagnoles" - which is very much a march setting. Don't think there's any lines of marching men, though.

What The Carmagnoles does have is a reference to "Behold the great Batavian line"!
