Subject: RE: Tune Add: Missing tunes wanted: From: Alan of Australia Date: 09 Sep 00 - 04:58 AM Some of the latest list of tunes were submitted by Malcolm Douglas. His notes follow. He has also embedded lyrics in the MIDI files. Whether you can view them depends on your software. Cruel_Ships_Captain.mid belongs to THE CRUEL SHIP'S CAPTAIN filename[ ANDRROS3 DT text transcribed from a recording by A.L. Lloyd. I don't know which of the several variant tunes found in tradition Lloyd used, so have made a midi of the particularly fine one collected by Vaughan Williams from James Carter of King's Lynn, Norfolk in 1905. The song is also known as "The Captain's Apprentice". Gruel.mid belongs to GRUEL filename[ GRUELL No source is named, but it seems to be a derivative of Jimmy MacBeath's version. Though the tune specified is "The Lincolnshire Poacher", it's not the familiar version, so I thought it best to make a separate midi; this is taken from the transcription of Jimmy MacBeath's singing in Ailie Munro's "The Folk Music Revival in Scotland". Roast_Beef.mid belongs to ROAST BEEF OF OLD ENGLAND filename[ ROASTBF The tune is a close relative of HARD TIMES OF OLD ENGLAND; it's different enough, though, to deserve a midi of its own, so I've made one from the set given in "The New National Song Book" (Boosey & Hawkes, 1957) Barley_Straw.mid belongs to BARLEY STRAW filename[ BARLSTRW DT text transcribed from Martin Carthy's recording. He learnt the song from the version recorded by Peter Kennedy from Harry Cox of Catfield in Norfolk, in 1953, though the words have got changed a bit somewhere along the way. Midi from the transcription in Kennedy's "Folk Songs of Britain & Ireland". Knight_And_Shepherds_Daughter.mid belongs to THE KNIGHT AND THE SHEPHERD'S DAUGHTER (5) filename[ SHEPDAU5 The version published by Cecil Sharp in "100 English Folk Songs" (1916). Tune collected by Sharp from John Swain of Donyatt, Somerset, in 1904. As_I_Roved_Out.mid belongs to AS I ROVED OUT filename[ ASIROVED Planxty version; they learnt it from Paddy Tunney, but seem to have made changes in the melody as noted in Tunney's book, "The Stone Fiddle". I've made a midi from that, modified to reflect the changes made by Planxty. Fionnghuala.mid belongs to FIONNGHUALA filename[ FINNONGU Recorded by the School of Scottish Studies from the singing of Calum Johnston (of Barra?). Midi made from the transcription given in the notes to "Music from the Western Isles" (Tangent Records TNGM 110, 1971: re-issued on Greentrax CDTRAX 9002). The notation is difficult, involving bars apparantly in 13/16, 14/16, 15/16 and 16/16. I'm not convinced that it sounds a lot like the recorded version, but present it as given.
