If you want your very own personal 5 litres will will need youe own receptacle. Good News 1: Emergency measures have been put into place at La Garenne put ensure an adequate supply of the nutient liquid concerned for Friday and to provide a solution while some of the world's top researchers seek a permanent solution. Good News 2: The BBC long range forecast for the La Rochelle region predicts sunshine (25oC) on Friday and sunshine (27oC) on Saturday! Peace Ricardo |
|
Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: MudGuard Date: 26 Apr 05 - 08:28 AM Which size of container can he provide? Is the long range forecast confirmed by our own BBC personal known as Kate-who-is-Kate? |

Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: mooman Date: 26 Apr 05 - 10:49 AM Not sure Andy... You could always lie under the bulk container and we will pipe it directly in... Ricardo |

Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: mooman Date: 26 Apr 05 - 02:31 PM Dear All, Good News 1 For those without suitable 5 litre containers for wine by the hosepipe, I am told the wine seller does 5 and 10 litre wine boxes of decent wines at a good price! Good News 2 The swimming pool will be open so you can bring your swimmeroonies if you want to. It may not have heated up fully but Saturday is forecast for 27C... Good News 3 There will be some basis vegetarian food available on Friday evening. If you want to barbecue your own though, that is also possible. Croissants and French bread have been ordered for Saturday morning. Good News 4 Two punts have been ordered for Saturday 16h00. Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: Susanne (skw) Date: 27 Apr 05 - 05:57 PM We'll have to drive slowly, Wolfgang, to give you time to acclimatise ... I've been warned it's 100 kmh maximum speed on French motorways anyway, so that shouldn't present a problem. However, it looks like our fifth Eurogathering has been organised to the high standard us Euro-Mudcatters have by now got used to. Thanks again Wolfgang, Richard & Pat, Letty and Greg! Only thirteen hours now before I start out. (Due for a haircut on the way.) |
|
Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: MudGuard Date: 27 Apr 05 - 06:04 PM Susanne, drive carefully, don't hit too many potholes - or you might wake up Wolfgang! A haircut on the way? Is Wolfgang going to cut your hair while you are driving? cu soon. Andreas |

Have to drop my babies in Paris first, so will probably lay Niort about 3am. Be gentle with me in the morning. Must go before I lose UK signal. We'll miss you, Eric and Letty, and will raise many a glass to you. |

Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: Eric the Viking Date: 29 Apr 05 - 12:19 PM Sorry Letty, the guest was me at school, not some "A horny mouse" poster trying to take away my mail order bride ! Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: Skipjack K8 Date: 30 Apr 05 - 08:42 AM Well, what a trip that was, like clockwork, apart from the interstate highway that isn't on any maps yet. Thee hours from Calais to the eastern side of Paris central, dropped off young people with Uncle Iain, then four and a half hours down to La Garenne, 750 miles in a day, and seventeen hours in the saddle. Can't really remember my name today, as it was 3am arrival and to bed, but we've done coffe, croissants and tunes this morning. That's enough from me, I'll try and get all gathered to do a bit. MudGuard speaking: So far it is a great weekend, though the location is a bit - let's say - remote (it took me 8 different means of transport to get here: tramway, subway, suburban, plane, regional train, metro, train, car) Good music, a beautiful house, wonderful hosts, good friends, good food, good wine, great wheather (sunshine, 22 degrees in the shade) Got to stop, other people queueing ... Charmion here -- We are comfortably established in a little hotel where Monsieur et Madame feed us like fighting cocks and the coffee is from heaven. It feels like summer here (they were threatening snow when we left Ottawa on 23 April) and the garden at La Garenne is in bloom, with the resident thrushes and blackbirds competing with the Mudcats conducting their first session before lunch. We will have to leave sometime soon, but I won't think about that now. Susanne here -- Temperature has gone up to 27 degrees in the paddock where the cars are. 13 hours of driving have landed us in the middle of a beautiful summer. I don't want to go back up north, but stay - pampered by our generous hosts Jill and Roger, partaking of the bread and cheese provided by Pat and Richard (mr & mrs Moo), with skipjack playing the piano in the background, as he is doing just now, or somebody else doing some music. It's right up there with the rest of the memorable Eurogatherings so far! Giok the hot now, I just hate it here, food wine music; no dancing girls though, still the weekend is young and I wish I was too. Interesting to put faces to names, some people are like you would think they'd be while others confound all my preconceptions. Anyway there is a large German waiting to add a few pearls of wisdom, and he's too big to argue with. Wish you were here, particularly those who wanted to come but were prevented by conferences, and cash flow. Giok Wolfgang's bit It's summer here at the end of April, a beautiful place. With all that hot air, even in the evening, and the local red wine, people get the most funny ideas, like me for instance singing for the first time a solo in all Mudcat meetings that heve been and I've been at all yet (like Greg, Andy and Richard). It was a thirteen hour drive down here, which is a bit crazy for a weekend, but not so much when thinking about all the good friends to meet and the music. Wolfgang Sunshine, good food, geat company and music: what more could you ask? Don't you wish you were here? It's a good job that it's not raining 'cos I'm sleeping in a tent. On the way down I paid for a hotel room - I could have slept anywhere but I needed somewhere secure for my instruments while I was out sightseeing. It comes to something when musical instruments get a higher priority than me! Doug C Yep...second (or third or fourth of fifth all of the above! Temperature up to a nice 29C now. Lovely location, music in the open barn until the wee hours, night animals craoking and calling and the milky way above. What could be better with good music and good friends. Off in a moment to upend the lot of them in the canal! Peace moo |

Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: Susanne (skw) Date: 01 May 05 - 09:30 PM Arrived back home half an hour ago (2.52am on May 2). We set out from La Garenne (with sincere regrets) a quarter past lunchtime (sans lunch). It being a Sunday the roads were empty, even circling Paris went like clockwork. Dropped Wolfgang off at Muenster at 11pm (but still 24 degrees!) and decided to push on, being wide awake. Was able to watch a beautiful thunderstorm between 1.30pm and 2.45 pm. Sometimes the light almost blinded me. Anyway, temp had been dropping for some time, it started to rain at 2.40, and at 2.50 I noticed a certain sleepiness. Got home safely, if distinctly cold (14 degrees outside ...), made a dash for the door in the pouring rain and will now be off to bed. Safe journey again to all other travelling Mudcatters (and honorary Mudcatters). This weekend was definitely worth driving 3011 kilometres to! |
|
Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: Wolfgang Date: 02 May 05 - 07:04 AM Susanne, that must have been a record breaking speed from Muenster to Kiel! Tell me about all the speeding tickets you get and send me the ones from my legs. A heartfelt thankyou to our hosts, Jill and Roger. They were not responsible for the splendid weather but they made what they could that we could enjoy it. And a thankyou to Richard and Pat for their part in the oragnisation. Letty, I've good news and bad news for you. The good news is that next time the Mudcat gathering will be so close to your place that you easily will be able attend. The bad news is that it will be in Cork and we expect the local Mudcatters to organise it. You can still object but you are outvoted. Seriously, Letty, of course you can say no thanks, but planning next year in Ireland has a distinct advantage: All the British Mudcatters have a bank holiday at the start of May, the German Mudcatters don't have one (that means that for instance Susanne did drive 32 hours to be in Niort from Friday evening to Sunday morning). But next year, the first of May is on a Monday that means that German Mudcatters have a long weekend which makes the thought to fly over to Ireland much more attractive. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: Skipjack K8 Date: 02 May 05 - 01:23 PM Just manoevering to port in Zeebrugge Roads on the way back to Hull9 across the German Sea. This morning I genuinely saw the sign 'Niort 9'. Without taking anything away from previous Eurogatherings, they just get better and better, and they were brilliant when they started. More when I am less expensively vacuous. It was just perfect. |

Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: GUEST,Wolfgang Date: 02 May 05 - 01:46 PM And what I forgot to say: Those being absent have been sadly missed and mentioned often with genuine affection ("I bet you ..... when pissed would have taken the night cover of the swimming pool for safe walking ground" "Imagine what that Portugese master dancer would do now with .... playing the maypole" "With that map by Richard .... would still stand in Calais scratching her head"). Which just means to say we had a lot of fun just thinking of you, sorry, I mean, we tried to have still some fun though you were only there in our thoughts. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: MudGuard Date: 02 May 05 - 03:27 PM Made it safely home, will try to make it safely to my bed right now, will read all the stuff after some sleep and write more then ... |

Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: mooman Date: 02 May 05 - 04:00 PM Home as well safely, us! About 7.5 hours door to door and not bad round Gay Paris. Yo! What a weekend! Will post up again soon and will post some photos to Jeff too. Thanks to all friends, old and new for making it another memorable gathering. Peace Richard |
|
Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: Letty Date: 02 May 05 - 05:41 PM Glad you had fun, will be honoured to organise it again next year. One but: if anyone who hasn't organised a mudmeet yet feels like doing it, I'd be happy to give them the opportunity. Not that I'm not keen, on the contrary, but I think everyone should have the chance, as it's great fun to do. So, if there is anyone who feels a calling, please speak up soon! It will be very different from Groningen, I expect: Cork still has closing times. Letty |

Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: MudGuard Date: 03 May 05 - 04:05 AM Ok, had some sleep (not yet enough, but can think a bit more clearly) ... Thanks to everyone involved in this weekend - it was great! On the Special thanks go to Jill and Roger for hosting the meeting at La Garenne and for an endless supply of tea, coffee, food, whatever else was needed, Richard and Pat for organizing the meeting (and food and drinks ...), the musicians for lots of wonderful tunes and songs, the birds (including hoopoes, sparrows, blue tits, great tits, yellow hammers, nightingales, starlings, red starts, robins, chaffinches, green finches, gold finches, swallows, house martins, sky larks, wrens, blackbirds, field fares, song thrushes, black caps, white wigtails and some more I don't remember or could not identify) and les grenouilles (frogs) for their concertos les voisins (the neighbours) for enduring our late-night/early morning sessions I had an idea how we could show our gratitude to Jill and Roger: let's send picture postcards to them with pictures from the place where you live. My Munich postcard will be on its way when I go to the post office later this morning. If all participants do that, Jill and Roger will have a nice collection ... If you need the address, send me a PM (I don't want to post it here publicly) I will start processing my photos this afternoon, so I hope I can send them to Jeff tonight. Andy/Andreas/MudGuard |

Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: Wilfried Schaum Date: 03 May 05 - 01:20 PM Hi folks - arrived today just some minutes after midnight, took a bath and a long nap. Missus sleeping, but this morning she told me how glad she was to see me on her side. So did I. What a wonderful time to meet some new people, esp. Canadians serenading the cows, and an unkilted Scot with a mighty voice. Besides the music I learned a lot about European and Transatlantic history. For some decades ago I eard a cuckoo, now again, and if I might believe his oracle I hope to outlive you all. And now I'm tired and want to go to bed again. Wilfried (or Jean, as I allowed our beautiful hosting lady Jill to call me sometimes) |

Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: Wolfgang Date: 03 May 05 - 02:24 PM Letty, there won't be any competition, I guess. If Skarpi offers Iceland, we'll tell him he has to wait until he can organise the 2010 common AmericoEuroMudgathering as an open air concert in Thingvallir. I shall sell the rights of the TV transmission. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: Susanne (skw) Date: 03 May 05 - 06:24 PM No speeding tickets for me, I'm sure. It just happened that the motorway was fairly empty between 11.30 and 3am on a Sunday night. Andy, a PM with the La Garenne address, please! A lot has been said about this Eurogathering which deserves to be called 'Small but beautiful', but I feel there hasn't been much mention of music so far. Sitting outside in the open barn till after midnight, strumming and humming a little, is one thing. What we didn't realise was that the Saturday night bash at the restaurant at Damvix (sorry, forgot its name) was a) open air and b) most public. There was an audience of fifty or so, all come to partake of the buffet barbecue (barbecue buffet?) accompanied by Mudcat music. Richard and Greg bore the brunt of this, ably supported by Doug, Edmund & Charmion, Giok, Pat singing a couple of her fine songs, and Wilfried who was brave enough to sing a German soldier's song in front of a (very) French audience. I chickened out - the general mood seemed to me not in favour of an a cappella song in a strange language and feeble voice. We all (I think) admired Charmion for getting up and doing an a cappella number during a very lively phase of audience participation. By the end, they were all listening. There was some dancing, too. I never managed to work out what my partner was dancing (a feeling probably reciprocated by him ...), but it was nice to be asked. And before that night I'd assumed that 'Will the Circle Be Unbroken' was a mournful, reflective number, not a dance tune. Greg, please don't do that again! Some local performers joined in on the drums and the singing, which made for a happy end to the proceedings around 11pm. So, thanks too to the landlady and landlord who seemed to enjoy the night as much as their guests. |

Subject: RE: EuroGathering 2005: The Final Countdown From: Doug Chadwick Date: 04 May 05 - 07:04 AM WOW !What a weekend !!!Just got back (10.30 a.m., Wednesday). A late start from La Garrenne and a bit of sightseeing at La Rochelle, meant an overnight stop sleeping in the car in a lay-by rather than finding proper accommodation but I recovered well enough on the overnight ferry. Those of you who had to leave to catch boats, trains and the like, missed a very special moment right at the end when Richard, on mandola, Giok, on guitar, and myself, on concertina, gave an impromptu performance as strolling minstrels to serenade the grandmother outside the neighbours' house. There have been lots of mentions of the sunny weather but not of the fact that it was warm enough to swim in the outdoor, unheated pool on May Day. There were, however, only four of us brave enough to try it. This year's Eurogathering scored on every point, with the chance to meet and make friends, both old and new, lots of music and beautiful surroundings The whole weekend was fun although I think an opportunity was missed when Greg stubbornly refused to get his pole stuck and fall in the water while punting us round the canals of La Petite Venice Verte. Our hosts, Jill and Roger, couldn't have made us feel more welcome. My thanks to them and to Richard and Pat for all their hard work organising the event. I'm already looking forward to next year in Cork Doug C |

More reflections from me later but, in the meantime, thanks to everybody for a brill weekend! Peace Richard (aka Ricardo or mooman) |
