skundered/scundered, a word which I never would have understood but for Mudcat.

It reminds me of one of the most hilarious Mudcat moments when way back in '97 a young female poster meant to say she was 'newbie' and actually did post she was 'nubile'. When the other posters laughed she said she was skundered and had to explain the word to us.

Some afterthoughts and experiences:

There is so much said and thanked that I can't add anything new - or?
A praise to the Viking who started to prepare the breakfast until he could commandeer female help which ended sometimes in his mere supervising the Kates (in his own words: Kate who is Kate and Kate who is Fibs). So thanks to them, too.

Isn't it marvellous that there were so many young and gifted people? So we can be sure folk won't fade away in the next future.

Some seemingly typical English inconsistencies:
- In BuH the place near the Six bells is called Crosshill. It is the lowest place of the village and displaying no cross. The Red House is painted entirely white with not the smallest speck of red at all.
- On the road the pub signs often do not match the names: The George shows a beautiful lady, and the Eagle guess what? A red lion.
- And now something baffling: In Hull there is a Church Side South which is not repeat NOT to the north of St. Mary's but where you'ld never expect it: it is really to the south!
- Labour Day is not a public holiday: On monday morning (Labour Day) Greg brought us to the bus station in Barton. Richard and I were more than disturbed: the timetable showed working days, sundays and public holidays, when the bus Greg was told by the enterprise shouldn't go according to the time table. But it arrived punctually at the time shown for sundays. Is there a shifting of holy days going on?

In Hull I wanted to visit some museums I missed to visit on Saturday. At the station there are no luggage lockers, and in the tourist information they couldn't help me either. But in the Maritime Museum I met a friendly warden who let me put my backpack into a private room during my stay in the town. After my stay we talked a little about my whereabouts, and he revealed himself as a parttime musician. He asked me whether I knew Wiesbaden and Mainz, where he had stayed some years ago doing a lot of gigs. So I told him that Wiesbaden is our state capital, and that I studied in Mainz for three years. Lots of funny memories.

In Utrecht I strolled through the Old Town full of churches, museums, restaurants, modern pubs, and curio shops - all for milking tourists. For the evening train I wanted to buy some bread, cheese, and canned beer but nearly despaired looking for a food shop. When I passed the public library I entered, revealed myself as fellow librarian from abroad, and asked the ladies to help me. They were able to show me the way to a shop, and I commented: "As usual; professors don't know everything, but librarians do - or find it out soon." Lots of laughter and giggling. It was nice experience for me.

And now some advice for the next gathering: If it's too difficult to learn french try to get accustomed to Franglais or Frenglish. Unfortunately the late Punch with its jolly column doest exist any more, but maybe you can lay hands on an old copy of Parlez Vous Franglais? (Let's Parlez Franglais) by Miles Kington (out of print). And work up your pronunciation. When the title of the famous book Rimbaud en Afrique stops to sound like Rambo in a frig and pas de surprise like the queerly contorted name Paddy Sir Breeze you are on the right way. And remember: the fine Burgundy wine Hautes Côtes de Beaune should never sound like Hot Coats of Bone.

Next time you're in Utrecht, once you enter the horrible place that is Hoog Catharijnen (the indoor shopping centre which also houses the station), follow the signs for Albert Heijn! Or get ready-made sandwiches in VenD.

I love Utrecht city centre with its canals, the old Dom (cathedral), and the area around the convent. It's Amsterdam without the tourists (don't get me wrong, I don't mind tourists, but hate crowds).

Anyway, would I be right to assume that for the next EuroGathering, I'd have to fly to Paris?

Letty - terrible to read about your towering mountains of tissues. What wonders me is that I lost the cold I had fetched some days before in Germany in BuH and 'ull.
I've hastened through Hoog Catharijnen (same feelings about that like your's); coming back with a heavy bag and having learned what the sign "ah" means I saw that I could have bought my stuff there, too.
In Utrecht I looked through the museums after an old altar of my home church which is said to be now in Utrecht - found none. Maybe it is the Middle Rhineish one in the Catharijneconvent (permanent exhibition closed until 2006, but some good pictures in the web). I have to look it up now from the other end.
Thanks for your good advice; I should have asked you in BuH for a good chain of stores and I should have spared me a lot of searching. But I won't ever forget the funny scene in the library.
Can you give me the tune of the adjective song?
I assume you have to fly to Paris next time, if you don't prefer to swim to La Rochelle. I have proposed to some train travellers to meet at a certain time in Paris, take the same train (and do a little busking during the ride?)

Wilfried - South Church Side runs along the south side of Holy Trinity Church, just as North Church Side runs along the north side. We can be logical sometimes.

Monday was a public holiday (what we call a Bank Holiday) and public transport tends to follow the Sunday times on such days.

Public transport has no lockers or left luggage as the IRA blew a few up many years ago. They've used this excuse since to avoid putting them back. I'm glad you found our museum staff helpful and our museums interesting.

Meant to post long before this, but better late that never (and better never than early! as a friend of mine says)...

First order of business: I echo the thanks that have already (most deservedly) been showered upon Skipjack K8 (and Jane, his cheerfully long-suffering spouse) and EtV; they were the most graciously accommodating and conscientious hosts one could wish for. Also Les from Hull for the interesting & informative tour -- I was so impressed with Hull I went back & told my other half how nice it is; I think we'll be coming back for a(nother) visit one of these days... And the amazingly generous hospitality of Jo, landlady of the Six Bells, was surpassed only by that of Skipjack & EtV.

As a fairly new Mudcatter (since October-ish) I especially enjoyed getting to meet -- and hear -- the people that go with the names I've been reading. And to pick up some Mudcat-lore, such as "Make mine a bear!", "curry ship", and learning to pronounce "Oaklet" correctly (i.e "OakLEE").

Like Wolfgang, a high point for me was during the Sat eve concert, when Bill Sables played Rick Fielding singing Jerry Rasmussens' "Handful of Songs" (a particularly moving and appropriate choice of song as well). What a warm, rich voice -- and then there's his guitar playing! Even tho I haven't been on Mudcat all that long, I had heardread SO much about Rick; hearing him helped me appreciate -- at least in part -- why he was so special to everyone. Thank you, Bill.

Letty, you have my sympathies about the "tissue mountain" (Saturday was like that for me). What amazed me was that even with a sore throat, your voice was *gorgeous*! No-one would have guessed you had one (a sore throat, I mean... not a voice!). Also really enjoyed hearing KJ & CT... *brilliant* singing and playing! Noreen also was in *very* fine form indeed.

Fibs (great to get to talk with you for a bit on the train to Sheffield), as "scundered" had me totally curiosified, I Googled to see if I could find out what it means; the closest I could find was in the "Hiberno-English Archive":

The unknowns are known to me. The truly gorgeous and gifted box player Kit is indeed Bloke's daughter, and she promises to make a return to our circuit when she's bottomed her degree.

The bespectacled youth is Stuart, or Thumper as he is known in these parts (apparently it's his bare knuckle soubriquet), and next to him is his fair of face father, Don, occasionally seen here as Ploughboy.

The bloke playing the banjo lives in Barrow, but I don't know his name. Perhaps Oaklet does?
