I am searching for a song with the following characteristics that a friend told me about-

1. There are verses for male and female

2. When sung separately, the verses are innocent

3. When sung at the same time, words interlacing, they become very bawdy.

That would be great for a comedic operetta. The man and the women are both on stage, on either side of a partition marking that they are in different locations. First the woman sings her innocent solo, then the man sings his innocent solo, then they both sing, alternating lines in a duet that when heard together is outrageously, hilariously bawdy, and ideally reflects what they may both be unconsciously thinking.

Sounds like what I am looking for, perhaps it is the lines and not the words that interlace to change the song from innocent to bawdy.

I remember hearing back in the late 70s, a choral item sung in parts - reminds me of PDQ Bach stuff (had the feel of approx Renaissance period style) - which was like that. Lines had pauses in for each part. when sung together, phrases in one part such as "Look up .... the stairs" would combine with phrases in another part such as "... her dress ..." for comic results.

A fair number of catches exploited that possibility -- e.g.,

    He who would an alehouse keep
    Must have three things in store:
    A chamber with a featherbed,
    A chimney, and a hey-nonny-nonny, etc.

One may also, as I have noted elsewhere, sing "Old Black Joe" and "I've Been Working on the Railroad" together; they more or less harmonize, and "Dinah, won't you blow" lands on top of "I'm coming".
