Several years ago my group learned a slide called "Coileach an Lae"; we've always wondered what the English translation of this title might be. Can anyone help us out?

Dear Mike,

The literal meaning is 'cock of the day/dawn' -- however, there might be a colloquial meaning that I don't know.

Assuming that we're thinking of the same tune, the title would be a shortening of Tá an Coileach ag Fogairt an Lae, which is known in English as The Cock is Announcing the Day or, more usually, When the Cock Crows it is Day.

Malcolm

'an' fixed by mudelf ;-)

Malcolm -- That's the tune that came to my mind first, too. But, I figured that it could be another one as well. You know what they say, 'if you know names of all the tunes, you don't know the tunes.'

Slán, Áine

Could well be, Áine, but I don't know of any other slide of that name.  Here is a midi of the one I do know; does it match, Mike?

Tá an Coileach ag Fogairt an Lae

Yes, the MIDI file is the same as the tune we play.
