Subject: Lyr Req: Cry a little tear for me, my Marie? From: GUEST,bunni Date: 05 May 04 - 06:05 PM Will someone please help me with info about a song that my boss has been trying for days to recall? All he can remember is something about "My Marie" or "Sweet Marie" and "Cry a little cry for me" or "Cry a little tear for me". I think it was released sometime in the 60s or 70s. THANK YOU!!! |

I am hoping that one of you can help me remember the name of the song involving "[my/sweet] Marie" and "cry a little [cry/tear] for me". Ring a bell with anyone? Or is my boss mistaken in his recollections? |

Subject: ADDPOP: Smile a Little Smile for Me From: Joe Offer Date: 06 May 04 - 01:18 PM Hi, Bunni - This is the one I was thinking of, but I thought it also had a verse about "cry a little tear for me, my Marie." Can't find it, so maybe it's a common misunderstanding. Anybody else have an idea? Hank Snow and Country Joe McDonald recorded songs called "Sweet Marie." Could you be thinking of a mix of several "Marie" songs. -Joe Offer- SMILE A LITTLE SMILE FOR ME (Geoff Stephens / Tony Macaulay) The Flying Machine (1969) You really should accept this time he's gone for good He'll never come back now even though he said he would So, darling, dry your eyes. So many other guys Would give the world, I'm sure, to wear the shoes he wore Oh, come on Smile A Little Smile For Me, Rose Marie Where's the use in cryin' In a little while you'll see, Rose Marie You must keep on tryin' I guess you're lonely now, love's coming to an end But, darling, only now are you free to start again Lift up your pretty chin, don't let those tears begin You're a big girl now, and you'll pull through somehow Oh, come on, Smile a little smile ...........etc. I know that he hurt you bad I know, darling, don't be sad And Smile A Little Smile For Me, Rose Marie....Rose Marie. Hal Leonard's Best Fake Book Ever calls the woman in question "Rosemary," but also spells one word "comeing" - can we trust Hal Leonard if he can's spell? |

Subject: ADDPOP: Marie From: Joe Offer Date: 06 May 04 - 02:03 PM Now, the other "Marie" song that comes to mind is this one. I know it from the 1965 recording by the Bachelors, and I was surpised to learn it was written by Irving Berlin and published in 1928. Early recordings by Rudy Vallee and by Tommy Dorsey. Marie (The Dawn Is Breaking) (Irving Berlin, 1928) There's a gleam in your eyes, Marie, And the meaning is plain to see But you'll find romance Is a game of chance That is not all it seems to be. Marie, the dawn is breaking Marie, you'll soon be waking To find your heart is aching And tears will fall as you recall The moon in all its splendor The kiss so very tender The words, "Will you surrender To me, Marie?" Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cry a little tear for me, my Marie? From: GUEST,bunni Date: 10 May 04 - 06:48 PM Hi Joe! You were absolutely right on your first try. My boss got that nostalgic, dreamy look in his eyes as soon as I started playing "Smile a Little Smile for Me". And, after hearing the song, I became a fan as well! I truly appreciate all your help. I'm just sorry I can't help you more with all of YOUR inquiries. One more question for you, though... what's a fakebook? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cry a little tear for me, my Marie? From: Allan C. Date: 10 May 04 - 07:16 PM Commercially produced fakebooks often include only the most familiar of popular songs, "standards" and family favorites. The lyrics shown for those songs are not always complete. The written music and the guitar chords shown are minimal, at best; but they are usually close enough to be useful. Glad you asked about that song, BTW. It is one of my favorites also. |
