I learned this song at camp in about 1973 or 1974. The lyrics that I recall went like this:

Verse My seed is sown now My field is plowed My (something something) now My (something something) So hurry sundown Be on your way And speed me a sunup For this beat-up sundown day

Chorus Hurry down, sundown Be on your way Weave me tomorrow Out of today

Ring a bell with anyone?

Recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary on the album called "Album". "...my flesh is bone now, my back is bowed..."

HURRY SUNDOWN
(Robinson / Harburg)

My seed is sown now, my field is plowed
My flesh is bone now, my back is bowed

CHORUS
So hurry, sundown, be on your way
And hurry me a sun-up from this beat-up sundown day
Hurry down, sundown, be on your way
Weave me tomorrow out of today

Tomorrow's breeze now, blows clear and loud
I'm off my knees now, I'm standing proud

So hurry, sundown, be on your way...

My sorrow's song, now, just must break through
That brave new dawn, now, long overdue

So hurry, sundown, be on your way...

Hurry down, sundown, get thee be gone
Get lost in the sunrise, of a new dawn
Hurry down, sundown, take the old day
Wrap it in new dreams, send it my way!
Send it my way, send it my way!

This song is actually one of my favourite Peter, Paul & Mary songs. Although not widely known, I just love this song.

I always thought this was an original song by Peter, Paul, and Mary, but I was wrong. The Wikipedia article on the song tells an interesting story of how it was a movie theme rejected by Otto Preminger:

"Hurry Sundown" is a 1966 song written by Yip Harburg and Earl Robinson, and first recorded by the folk music trio Peter, Paul and Mary.

The song was commissioned by director Otto Preminger, who wanted a theme song for his 1967 film Hurry Sundown. Preminger contacted Robinson, who began working on the song, then visited Harburg for help with the lyrics. Harburg was not interested in the financial contract, but nonetheless assisted with shaping the song.

Preminger chose not to use the song. However, Milt Okun, who was at that point the arranger for Peter, Paul and Mary, heard "Hurry Sundown" and suggested it to the group. They recorded the song and released it on their 1966 album The Peter, Paul and Mary Album. The song was the second single released from the album, after "The Other Side of This Life". It was released on January 14, 1967, and reached #37 on the Billboard Easy Listening chart, as well as #123 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart. A group of uncredited musicians provided the brass section for this song. The single version omits the brass section, as well as the third verse, which the time length runs 2:10.

"Hurry Sundown" was one of eight songs nominated for the Best Folk Recording Grammy Award in 1967; the song lost to Cortelia Clark's "Blues in the Street".
