Advice, please (new banjo - wants lessons)

My cousin Lee had a birthday a week ago yesterday. One of his kids presented him with (wait for it) — a five string banjo!

Lee wants to learn to pluck around on it. Since he is 72, this won’t be easy. I warned him that even as a retired cop he can be arrested for bad banjo playing, he still wants to go ahead.

Any suggestions as to how he can start this quest?

Pick Ing is difficult to master at Any Age.

I suggest:
Open Tuning
1..4..5 chords
Strum

Simple tunes/songs you know/like (master four by New Year)

Picking is not difficult, if you allocate time... and practice right hand picking on its own, without fretting the left hand, to start practice thumb down, first finger, up on alternate strings.
if you think something is difficult you will never get it, it is rather like doing the long jump in sport, you set yourself achievable goals and increase gradually, learning is partly about having a positive mind set
