According to a J. B. Towe, this "hymn" was made by a company of slaves, who were not allowed to sing or pray. When he died, their old mistress granted them the privilege. "Then they sang this hymn, and shouted for joy, and gave God the honor and praise." This is from Fenner, 1874, Cabin and Plantation Songs, in Armstrong.

A GREAT CAMP-MEETIN' IN DE PROMISED LAND

The title is sometimes "Walk Together, Children," as in Johnson, The Second Book of Negro Spirituals (pp. 180-182). Heavenly Gospel Singers (as "Walk Together Chillun", Document, vol. 2) and Five Blind Boys of Mississippi (I Never Heard a Man, Jewell) recorded it under this title.

This spiritual also appears in Negro Spirituals, or the Songs of the Jubilee Singers, but "Hampton and its Students" are acknowledged. Masato, the "Walk together..." first line as a title is more characteristic of the song as a whole. It should be quoted as a parallel or subtitle in the DT and Spiritual Register.
