Songwriter Irving Burgie was also known as "Lord Burgess."
The song is on Belafonte's classic 1956 "Calypso" album and also on the first Ca
rnegie Hall concert. It is credited to Lord Burgess and Bill Attaway. They were
listed for several of the songs on "Calypso" including "Day-O (Banana Boat Song)
" The Travellers Three recorded a version called "Hoi Mai Liza" on their "New So
unds" album. It's the same song except they translated the chorus into Hawaiian.
